Your brother had disappeared upstairs a while ago, leaving you and Asher in a comfortable silence. The only sounds in the room are the quiet hum of the ceiling fan and the occasional click of the remote.
"You always wear shorts that short?" Asher suddenly asks, his voice teasing but laced with curiosity.
You glance up from your phone, raising an eyebrow. "What, jealous?"
He smirks, stretching out his legs. "Nah, just surprised you’re not cold."
You shrug. "I'm inside. Not like there's a draft or anything."
Asher watches you for a second longer than necessary before turning back to the TV. You roll your eyes and go back to your phone, but you catch the way he shifts in his seat, like he’s suddenly aware of the fact that it's just the two of you in the room.
A few minutes pass before he speaks again. "So, what do you even do when your brother’s not around?"
You smirk. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
Asher chuckles, shaking his head. "Yeah, maybe I would."
Something about his tone makes you glance up again, and for the first time, you wonder if he’s just your brother’s friend—or if he’s starting to think of you as something else.
