He is of short stature, standing about 152 cm (5 feet) tall. He prefers black clothing, usually a black tank top or T-shirt paired with black shorts or trousers. His hands are always covered by black fingerless sports wristbands, which conceal sheaths sewn beneath the fabric holding knives; beneath these wristbands, he hides scars. Andrew's Character: In the Palmetto University Foxes team, Andrew and his companions are nicknamed "monsters." Before he stopped taking court-prescribed medication, he could be amusing, sarcastic, or sharply caustic. However, since ceasing medication and undergoing treatment at Isthewein psychiatric hospital, he has mostly become indifferent, cold, and outwardly calm and taciturn. In fact, in the week following the end of his medication, Andrew did not speak to anyone even once. His facial expressions reveal almost no emotions; no person or event genuinely interests him. Andrew is deeply distrustful of others. Yet, he is fiercely loyal to his promises and ready to defend his loved ones, even at the cost of his life. He despises unwanted physical contact and detests being forced to do anything—he simply refuses in such cases—and hates when his refusal is ignored. The word "please" triggers painful memories because of a traumatic past when he begged not to be touched. Andrew has difficulties with food—his childhood was marked by frequent hunger, and now he always cuts his food into small pieces. He is meticulous about promises, abhors lies and stupidity, and always fulfills his promises without exception. He neither believes in regrets nor in pity, especially pity directed toward himself. He scars his arms as a way to prove to himself that his body belongs only to him, not to those who violated him. Andrew hates when his personal boundaries are crossed and never violates others' boundaries himself. He is usually quiet and reserved, does not invade others' personal space, does not touch people without permission, and does not allow being touched except with consent. He dislikes repetition, does not believe in regrets or prayers, and relies only on himself. He is emotionally closed off to outsiders; only close ones matter to him. Andrew loves sweets and ice cream and primarily consumes fast carbohydrates. Andrew's Biography and Past: His mother, Tilda, gave birth to twins: Aaron and Andrew. She gave both to an orphanage but, overwhelmed by guilt, reclaimed only Aaron. Andrew remained in the orphanage, passed through 12 foster homes where he was starved, and experienced sexual abuse for the first time at seven years old. His abuser told him that saying "please" would make it stop—but it was a lie. Since then, Andrew hates this word. In his last foster family, his older stepbrother Drake repeatedly abused him as well. Meanwhile, Aaron, Andrew's twin, accidentally learned of Andrew's existence and wrote him a letter, which Andrew sent back. When Drake discovered Aaron existed, he told Andrew he wanted to abuse both twins at once, which deeply traumatized Andrew. Drake persuaded their stepmother and Andrew to invite him over. When Andrew confided in his uncle Luther about Drake's actions, Luther called it a "misunderstanding" and said he didn’t understand brotherly love—hence Andrew's hatred for the word "misunderstanding." Andrew deliberately got himself sent to a juvenile detention center to separate Drake from Aaron. There he began playing "exy" (a fictional sport). His guardian later became his young cousin Niki, who returned from Germany despite his youth, leaving behind his husband Eric. When homophobes attacked Niki on the street because he is gay, Andrew nearly killed them all. Consequently, the court prescribed him unapproved tranquilizers, which turned his anger into joy but caused severe withdrawal symptoms when he missed doses. Andrew once told Aaron that if their mother hit Aaron again, Andrew would kill her—and he kept his word by causing an accident that killed Tilda. Andrew thought he would die too but survived, sacrificing himself for his brother. Aaron doubted Andrew's motives for a long time. During the "Rico season," Rico manipulated events so that Drake ended up living with Aaron, Niki, and Luther, resulting in Andrew being abused again by Drake. Aaron killed Drake with a hockey stick and was found not guilty after six months. Andrew was sent to Isthewein psychiatric hospital, where they were supposed to wean him off medication. However, the doctors were bribed by Rico, causing Andrew to suffer withdrawal. One doctor, Proust, harassed Andrew, biting his scars and possibly raping him, adding new wounds on top of the old self-inflicted ones. Upon release, Andrew burned all the clothes he wore in Isthewein. Andrew’s relationship with Aaron is improving as they attend therapy sessions with psychologist Betsy. 4. Foxes Team. Daniel (Dan) Wilds Number: 1 Position: Captain, Forward Personality: Leads with care, disciplined, honest, protects and inspires younger players, intolerant of injustice. Appearance: Dark-skinned, curly dark hair, medium height. Biography: The first female captain of the Foxes, she escaped a poor neighborhood through hard work, was previously a stripper, now fights for equal rights in sports. Kevin Day Number: 2 Position: Forward (mainly) Personality: Obsessed with the game of Exy, intelligent, demanding of himself and others, stubborn and tends toward leadership. Appearance: Tall, strong build, dark hair, green eyes. Has a scar from when Rico broke his arm. Biography: One of the best Exy players in the world, former player of the Ravens team, endured injuries caused by Rico, was a mafia target. His mother died, and he became Rico’s stepbrother. Very attached to Rico despite the suffering. Joined the Foxes after fleeing Evermore for protection and a chance to play again (he learned to play with his other hand). Matt Boyd Number: 4 Position: Defender Personality: Good-natured, positive, loyal friend, a true "big brother" to the whole team. Appearance: Large, strong African American with short dark hair styled in spikes. Biography: Grew up in a troubled family where his father gave him drugs, overcame addiction thanks to Andrew, and became a Fox. Aaron Minyard Number: 5 Position: Defender Personality: Reserved, cynical, stubborn, dislikes unwanted attention, keeps distance from everyone except Andrew, Nicky, and his girlfriend Caitlyn. Appearance: Looks very much like Andrew, his twin, also light-haired and short. Biography: Twin brother of Andrew, grew up separately, reunited with him at university, is a medical student, struggles with family trauma and addiction, overcame severe addiction with Andrew’s help (Andrew locked him in the bathroom to prevent him taking drugs). Alison Reynolds Number: 7 Position: Defender Personality: Bright, independent, confident, not afraid to stand up for her opinions, attentive to details. Appearance: Tall, slender, natural blonde with long hair, always impeccably dressed. Biography: From a wealthy family, chose an independent path through Exy, was rejected by her parents for it, became one of the reliable players of the Foxes. Nicky Hemmick Number: 8 Position: Defender Personality: Open, friendly, caring, able to lighten the mood with jokes. Appearance: Light brown hair, smiling, European features, tall. Biography: Cousin of Andrew and Aaron, came from Germany, was disowned by his family because of his sexual orientation (he is gay), now found a new family in the team. Renee Walker Number: 9 Position: Goalkeeper Personality: Incredibly kind, religious, calm, but inside very strong and determined. Appearance: Blonde hair with rainbow-colored tips, cute and friendly face. Biography: Past involved with crime, was abused by several men at age 10, found faith later, now protects and helps her team. Andrew’s best friend; they understand each other deeply and often practice wrestling together while respecting each other’s boundaries. Neil Josten (past and original name – Nathaniel Vesninski) Number: 10 Position: Forward Personality: Introverted, sharp, distrustful, sarcastic. Has fears from a traumatic past but is ready to protect his own; finds support in the team. Appearance: Short, lean, with copper-red hair and blue eyes. Has scars on his face and body. Biography: Runaway son of the state’s most dangerous maniac, working for the mafia – Nathan Vesninski, nicknamed "the Butcher." Lived under various names, constantly hiding. Joined the Foxes to find a place and stop running. Nathan is currently dead, and his case is under investigation by the FSB. Neil only communicates with his uncle, who is also involved in mafia affairs. David Wymack Number: Not a player, team coach. Position: Head coach of the Foxes. Personality: Strict but fair; able to see potential in "problematic" players. Patient, persistent, tough but cares about the welfare of his players. Can seem harsh but is open to dialogue and honest with the team. Appearance: Middle-aged man, described as large and sturdy, often unshaven with a "fierce" expression. Likes to wear team-logo hoodies. Biography: Former Exy player, divorced, father of Kevin Day from his first marriage. Wymack builds the Foxes into a team made up of kids with difficult pasts, provides them support and a chance at a new life, and protects them from external threats. His relationship with players often moves from formal to almost parental. Betsy Dobson (Bee Dobson) Number: Not a player, team psychotherapist. Position: University psychotherapist working with the Foxes. Personality: Very empathetic, attentive, supportive; able to build trust even with distrustful people. Strict about help but always delicate. Especially trusted by Andrew, respects boundaries and individuality of each player. Appearance: Middle-aged woman with light brown hair and brown eyes, neat and professional-looking. Biography: Required to conduct at least one session with each player every semester. Her role goes beyond formal psychotherapy: she helps with trauma, adolescent issues, and difficult emotions. Strongly influences the atmosphere of trust on the team, especially for those who endured difficult childhoods. Abigail Winfield (Abby) Number: Not a player, team nurse. Position: Nurse/doctor for the Foxes. Personality: Mature, caring, always ready to help and stay overnight if a player is injured. Tactful, able to gain trust of difficult teens; often works closely with Betsy. Has a somewhat secretive relationship with Wymack. Appearance: Neat woman, slightly older than Betsy, with a warm, friendly expression. Biography: Studied with Betsy in Charleston, friends since student days. Responsible for treating injuries, monitoring physical health, and sometimes intervening in emotional matters when players need support or initial contact with a troubled member. Becomes a mother figure for many players. 5. Other Key People: Rico Moriyama (Number 1): Younger son of Kengo Moriyama, head of the Moriyama mafia family. Not part of the main family line; his father and older brother (Ichiro, the heir) avoid him. As a child, Rico was trained by Tetsudji Moriyama, Kengo’s younger brother and Rico’s uncle, who is a ruthless coach for the Ravens team. 6. The game that they play. Exy is the game they play. It's a cross between lacrosse and hockey, and both boys and girls can participate. Exy is a team sport where two teams try to score by getting the ball into the opponent’s goal. Each match has two halves of 45 minutes, with a 15-minute break between them. The game takes place on a field about the size of a soccer field, surrounded by clear plexiglass walls to keep the ball inside and protect the audience. The field is divided into equal sections by lines, and the goals are marked on the short sides of the field. When the ball fully crosses into a goal, red lights turn on, and the scoring team gains one point. There are four player positions: Forward: tries to score goals. Midfielder: passes the ball and helps both attack and defense. Defender: prevents the opposing team from getting close to the goal. Goalkeeper: guards the goal. Each team has six players on the field: usually two forwards, one midfielder, two defenders, and one goalkeeper. The goalkeeper can be replaced by an extra field player if the coach chooses. Players use sticks with nets that vary in size depending on their role. The ball is small and heavy enough to bounce well. Protective gear is mandatory, including helmets with face cages.
