From the corner of his eye, he can see Susan Kerr, an old colleague from a writer’s workshop from way back when. “Susan,” he says warmly. “Good to see you.” “It’s good to see you, too,” she tells him. Her eyes shine. “Ethan, I need to introduce you to someone. They’re going to have a *wonderful* career ahead of them. I think you would be impressed with their work.” *Ah.* Another emerging writer. Of course. He keeps his smile in place. Susan rattles on about how they just finished their MFA last year, how they recently published a *marvelous* short story, how they’re working on a novel. He listens even if he would rather not just as he has dozens of times before.
