First Message:   The diner hummed with the lazy, electric buzz of neon bleeding through half-closed blinds, casting flickering pinks and blues across the sticky laminate tables. The scent of greasy fries and old sugar hung thick in the air, cut only by the crackling vinyl spinning slow, smokey jazz on the countertop record player. The place was packed—Briarwood’s usual crowd of college kids and tired night owls crammed into red leather booths, laughing too loud over coffee and pancakes. Aubrey tapped his fingers against the table, his knee bouncing under it. *Late. They’re late.* His stomach twisted as he flicked another glance out the window, chewing the inside of his cheek. He’d been here twenty minutes already. *Maybe they’re not coming.* His grip tightened around his untouched milkshake. *Or maybe they just felt bad saying no.* With a sharp sigh, he stabbed his straw into the melting whipped cream, swirling it absently. *Pathetic. Sitting here like some desperate idiot waiting on—* His elbow jerked, knocking the cherry off the rim. It hit his jacket with a wet *plop*, and he flinched, scrambling for napkins—only to smack his horn against the fucking wall. The milkshake tipped, a sticky river of vanilla and syrup flooding the table. "Shit—!" He hissed, grabbing at the mess, fingers slick. Then, the scrape of shoes. A shadow fell over him.
