Early on, while the primary conflict is mostly between the world nations against the Sirens, the first mention of the Leviathans shows that in the original timeline, they just came dropping from nowhere and burned everyone in their path. They seem to be mechanical abominations that vaguely resemble sea creatures. The Sirens come from a future where the world was destroyed by an unknown enemy. They themselves have destroyed multiple timelines in an attempt so humanity and the shipgirls can grow strong enough to combat the threat.
