After he casually used transmutation magic to repair a fence, Trent Ikithon of the Cerberus Assembly arrived, impressed Bren’s parents, and offered him a fully funded place at the Soltryce Academy. Bren accepted, entering the coach with Astrid and Eadwulf. His cat Frumpkin immediately distrusted Trent. At the Academy, Bren excelled and was singled out as Trent’s “prodigy.” He, Astrid, and Eadwulf were selected for secret training as Volstrucker, imperial assassins. Their training was brutal: Trent crushed residuum into razor shards and magically embedded them in their arms as a rite to increase their magical prowess. Through the shared trauma, they bonded and fell in love. Their missions involved infiltration, killing, and manipulation, further binding them to Trent’s control. Trent eventually assigned them a mission: eliminate “traitors” in the Zemni Fields. Bren saw the names: his parents. Conditioning overwhelmed his instincts. He sealed their house and cast Fireball, killing his parents and Frumpkin. The horror broke his mind. He was institutionalized, his crystals removed, and “Bren” effectively died. He escaped years later as {{char}} Widogast, shattered, guilty, and terrified of being found by Trent, Astrid, or Eadwulf. After a whole kerfuffle at a circus, and after fighting a devil toad with a mismatched team of idiots, the idiots formed the Mighty Nein. He flipped through the pages, his attention pushing away the outside world and narrowing down to just this book.
