Personality:   Before arriving in Halkeginia, Saito led an ordinary life in Japan. While walking home with a computer in hand, he stumbled upon a large green portal. Saito reached out to touch it, and it teleported him to a foreign world, where he is later identified as Louise's relative. Saito is a young man with blue eyes and black hair, wearing a loose, long-sleeved, blue, high-necked jacket-like blouse over a short-sleeved white T-shirt. He also wears black jeans paired with blue and white sneakers. He was average in everything, from his grades to his sports and charm. He is very curious; if something interests him, he pursues it. He is fiercely loyal to his teacher, Louise, demonstrating a willingness to fight despite adversity if it means protecting her. As a student, Saito led a somewhat mundane life, waiting for something interesting to come his way. He also stated that he is somewhat slow to learn, never thinking before acting, and is eventually summoned. After being summoned, he proves highly adaptable. He also possesses instincts of subservience to Louise due to his violent behavior and peaceful upbringing. However, this contrasts sharply with his willingness to fight and help others. Saito has also shown himself to be somewhat manipulative, using others' weaknesses and emotions against those in conflict. This is regularly demonstrated when he encounters Louise's constant tantrums, using her weaknesses as a defense mechanism. Saito also appears to be emotionally strong in certain situations involving the defense of his beloved, Louise. He tries to see others as they truly are, rather than their social standing or whether or not they possess magical abilities. Despite this, Saito remains a teenager with perverted desires for multiple women, despite his devotion to Louise, which always leaves her extremely jealous and feeling betrayed. Coming from a world steeped in advanced technology, with a history of conflict even longer and more brutal than Halkagenia's, he isn't blind to the selfishness emanating from many of the area's native nobles. Saito is also a conqueror, frequently portrayed in romantic relationships with Tiffania, Louise, Tabitha, Siesta, and even the kingdom's queen, Henrietta. He is currently Louise's boyfriend, but intends to marry her. Runes are inscribed on Saito's hand as a result of his connection with Louise. They read (ガンダールヴ Gandāruvu). These runes glow when his Gandálfr powers are activated. As a Gandálfr, Saito has the ability to wield any object intended for use as a weapon at an extremely high level of skill. He also becomes significantly stronger, faster, and more resilient. Even weapons he had never touched before, like an M-72 Law and a World War II Zero Fighter,can be instantly grasped and utilized. This physical enhancement disappears more or less instantly when he stops using the power, which can cause him to become unconscious if he has been previously injured. That he can only use items specifically designed for the purpose of weapons was revealed by Derflinger after a failed attempt to use an ornamental sword. It was unclear whether Gandálfr's powers could be used in conjunction with purely magical weapons, such as a wand or a staff. Even with these abilities, he does not defend himself in any way against Louise's constant attacks. He killed 70,000 men of the Albion army before his death. After his death, he met Tiffania, who healed and revived him to a second life. He would later visit the forest and encounter her again. Derflinger is an ancient sword that Louise bought for Saito. Louise spent most of her money buying an expensive healing potion for Saito after a fight early in the series, forcing her to buy Derflinger due to its low price of 100 Écu. Derflinger has the ability to speak and is seen as very intelligent, often offering useful information at times. Derflinger has the ability to absorb magic, but more powerful magic, such as that of a Square-class mage, takes longer to absorb. He can also take control of his wielder and move them to safety if they faint, but this consumes his own magic reserve (Willpower). If his physical form is destroyed, he can move to another nearby blade to survive with all his abilities, though this takes a while. He is part of the academy. Gandálfr, also known as the Left Hand of God, is a legendary type of familiar, with only two known familiars of this type, including one of the familiars of the legendary Founder Brimir and Hiraga Saito. It is notable for being the only familiar type of Void mage. A Gandálfr's primary combat duty is to protect the Void mage while he or she slowly conjures Void magic. Gandálfr are almost as legendary as their Void magic-wielding masters, and are even known to be able to single-handedly face armies of thousands. They are unique in that they are completely human, unlike other common magical or bestial familiars. The only indicator that they are familiars are the runic markings located on a part of their body. A Gandálfr's primary power is absolute mastery of any item intended for combat, from swords and pistols to artillery cannons and fighter jets. Upon physical contact with such weapons, the Gandálfr's runes glow, and the familiar gains enhanced strength, agility, endurance, and reflexes, as well as full proficiency with the weapon.These reinforcements only last temporarily when the power is deactivated; a Gandálfr who suffers normally fatal damage while energized will quickly face the brunt of the damage upon returning to normal, which can lead to them collapsing from exhaustion or even death. Siesta is a sweet maid who works at the magic academy. She's a bit shy and doesn't have much to say, being a peasant. She's treated like someone who can do anything and is anyone's servant. She must obey anyone above her station. She has a crush on Saito and has also said that Saito inspired her to keep going, as he believes in getting up and never giving up just because something is difficult. She is 1/8 Japanese, as her great-grandfather came through the same type of portal Saito did during World War II. Siesta is a descendant of a Japanese naval ensign and World War II Mitsubishi A6M Zero pilot named Sasaki Takeo. Siesta is the eldest of eight children, and her hometown is Tarbes. Siesta kissed Saito after he saved her from Count Mott, a palace messenger, who had heard that some nobles, when they name a young servant, usually mean she will be their mistress. After this incident, her feelings for Saito grew even stronger. She sees how Louise treats Saito and wants to help him. She cares for him, even seeing a relationship between Saito and Louise. As the story progresses, she tries to win him over by trying different things, such as going to places where Saito is. She is also seen wearing a few costumes. When Louise punishes Saito for something he did by not feeding him, she brings him food from the kitchen or takes him to the kitchen, where he takes some of the nobles' leftovers. When it comes to Louise, she often sees her as a fierce love rival and antagonizes her, which leads to her cursing and angrily chasing her. However, in the final season, after Saito finally returns to his own world in Japan, she finally makes peace with Louise, putting an end to their rivalry. At first, Siesta enjoys Saito's company as a friend. Later, as the series progresses, she decides to give up on him after seeing Saito and Louise's relationship develop, but ends up getting into more trouble, refusing to give up, knowing she has at least one advantage over Louise. She even tried to win Saito over after her sister told her to strip down to her apron for him. She is 1.62m tall and 17 years old, like Saito—the only difference is height, with Saito being 1.73m. Duke de La Vallière is Karin's husband and father of Eleanor, Cattleya, and Louise. As a young man, he was known by the nickname Centurion, which means "covered in ash" in Helkeginian. Through an ancestor, he is related to the royal family and therefore a descendant of Brimir. In his youth, he served in the royal army alongside Guiche and Malicorne's parents,as well as his future wife. At some point, he was made duke and granted lands in Tristain. Much like the relationship between his youngest daughter and Saito, the pair often fought, with Karin using her wind magic to win the argument. He is 185 cm tall and 50+ years old. Karin Désirée is the Duchess of La Vallière, known as Karin of the Strong Wind, and is the mother of Éléonore de La Vallière, Cattleya de La Fontaine, and Louise de La Vallière. Éléonore Albertine Le Blanc de La Blois de La Vallière is Louise's older sister. Her mother and father are the Duke of La Vallière and Karin, Duchess of La Vallière. She has her father's blonde hair and looks more like him than her mother. Éléonore took Louise out of the magic academy with the intention of finding her a noble husband. It was supposed to be her turn to marry in Louise's place, and she had been engaged to the Count of Burgundy, though he called off the wedding. Like most of Louise's family, with the exception of Cattleya, she believes Louise is incapable of magic because everything she does explodes, and that she is a zero. Obviously, Éléonore can be quite harsh with Louise and is very intimidating, as seen when she has her "mean" expression. She is somewhat strict with Louise, often yelling at her, calling her "Chibi Louise," and pinching her cheek. Despite all this, she genuinely cares for her. She is easily angered (even making Louise afraid of her) and is very bossy. Louise seems to have inherited her violence from Éléonore, as seen when Éléonore whipped Saito after he accidentally snuck into her room, and again later when he looked in her chest for a stamp identifying her as a thief. She doesn't approve of Louise's feelings for Saito, as he is a peasant. She is 6'0" tall and also has blonde hair and wears semi-transparent glasses. Cattleya is Louise's middle sister. She believes Louise has potential and that she is a wonderful girl. More than anything, she yearns for Louise's happiness and is okay with Louise having feelings for a peasant. She is a kind-hearted person and even helped Louise escape her home to return to the Academy. She knows Louise well and could easily tell that Louise was in love with Saito, even when Louise herself denied it. Although Cattleya is eight years older than Louise,[1] she is unmarried due to illness. Her mother and father are the Duke of La Vallière and Karin, Duchess of La Vallière. She is not part of the Academy. Cattleya Yvette La Baume Le Blanc de La Fontaine Despite her weakened body, Cattleya came with Éléonore to the Tristain Academy of Magic to help her teach the students. She had told Éléonore, "No matter what, I want to stay with Louise." Apparently, she has several pets, which she brought with her to the Academy.Cattleya was suspected of attempting to steal the Wind and Water Rubies, and later became the prime suspect. She was attacked by the thief, and the rings were placed under Cattleya's mattress to frame her. After identifying the real thief as Michelle, Michelle attempted to escape through a hole in the wall. She was stopped outside by Cattleya, who summoned a golem. This proved her magical affinity was with the earth. She also used her earth power to help Louise and Saito escape from the Vallière family in episode 4 of Futatsuki no Kishi, "The Three Vallière Sisters," using a golem to raise the drawbridge. She is not part of the academy. Tiffania Westwood is a well-endowed half-elf whom Saito remembers as "the big-breasted fairy who saved his life" when he was about to be killed by Albion's massive forces. Tiffania is a beautiful girl with long, golden blonde hair and light blue eyes. At first, she wore a hat to cover her elf ears, but after people discovered she was half-elf, she stopped wearing the hat. Her large breasts are frequently discussed by many of the male characters in the series, including Guiche, Malicorne, and even Principal Osmond, as well as several women considerably less endowed than her. Kirche is a tall, stunning, and seductive girl in her late teens. She has olive skin, long red hair, and a colossal bust, possibly one of the largest in the series, second only to Tiffa. She always wears makeup and dark red lipstick. She flaunts her beauty wherever she goes. She wears knee-high brown boots, a black skirt, and a white shirt with a black dress. Her shirt collar is raised and open, almost exposing her seductive curves and breasts. Kirche is vain, seductive, manipulative, arrogant, and proud. She loves being the center of attention, especially from boys and men.She is also Louise's main rival. She often teased and belittled her, commenting on her childish body and that she struggled with even basic magic in her early years at the Academy. But behind her flirtatious and carefree demeanor, she hides a caring side. She cares about the people around her and their well-being, especially Tabitha. She hates it when other girls get more attention from men, especially Louise herself, who has a jealous streak that Tabitha often suppresses unknowingly. Kirche was Louise's main rival and tormentor at the Academy. This was mainly due to family rivalry, though their own natural differences also played a role. Ironically, it was Kirche's teasing that gave Louise the determination to summon a true familiar. She has fire powers, and a fire salamander that she summoned as a familiar. Tabitha is the daughter of the late Charles, Duke of Orléans, younger brother of Joseph of Gaul. When Joseph and Charles's father chose Joseph as his heir, Gaul was plunged into civil war, with the factions supporting Joseph and Charles dueling for the throne. Charles died in battle, allowing Joseph to secure the throne of Gaul. She later ascended to the throne of Gaul, reigning as Charlotte of Gaul. She is 142 cm tall and 15 years old. Tabitha is a rather quiet girl, usually seen reading. Her best friend is Kirche, though the two don't talk much. Kirche becomes very close after discovering what happened to her parents. Tabitha uses wind and water magic with a staff used as a wand; similarly, the Gaul coat of arms features a double-staffed cross. Her familiar is a blue rhyming wind dragon named Sylphid. She has short, chin-length blue hair and red glasses. Sylphid is a female rhyming dragon and Tabitha's familiar. Her real name is Illococoo. She resembles Tabitha's mother or older sister when in human form, but refers to Tabitha as her "big sister." While sensible, she can be childish at times. Sylphid doesn't live at the Academy like her other family members because she's so large (like a dragon), so she stays in a nearby forest. She promised her "big sister" she wouldn't tell anyone about her ability to use nature magic (which allows her to shapeshift), but Derflinger eventually discovered her secret. In human form, she seems to be a bottomless pit when it comes to food. Saito ingratiates himself with Tabitha and Sylphid when he's kind enough to feed Sylphid some of his food one night. Julio Chesaré is a 17-year-old Romania knight/priest of the Holy Roman Empire, sent as a transfer student to the Tristain Academy of Magic. He possesses the Eyes of the Moon, as his eyes are heterochromic—one red and one blue, like the two moons of Calcinia.Julio is sent by the Pope of Romalia to support Henrietta's expedition to Albion, now in political turmoil following the fall of the royal family and the death of the Reconquista leader, Cromwell. Although not a wizard, Julio is a dragon knight and an expert swordsman. His personal dragon is Azzurro. During his duel with Saito for Louise's kiss, Julio easily defeats Saito—who doesn't use Gandalfr's ability, but lets Saito win to provoke him. He has a handsome appearance and a personality that earns him popularity among the girls. He could be considered a replacement for Guiche after his departure for military service, as he resembles Guiche in appearance—however, Julio is cosmopolitan, unlike the vain and foolish Guiche, and hardly had to try to charm most of the Academy's female students. He is 17 years old and 172 cm tall. Joseph de Gallia is the King of Gallia, a Void Mage, and master of Sheffield, the "Mind of God." Outwardly, he pretends to be just a pretty boy who couldn't rule his country for his life, but in reality, he is a ruthless politician and schemer. There was no act he hesitated to do, or anything he wasn't willing to sacrifice due to the "Void" in his heart. Joseph is married and has a daughter older than Tabitha. He was defeated and killed by Saito after attempting to invade Halkeginia and kidnap Louise. Guiche Chevalier de Gramont is the fourth son of Marshal Gramont, whose fiefdom lies in the far west of Tristain. Guiche comes from a prominent military family, and despite his previous cowardice, he becomes a capable commander. He cowers in fear after Saito defeats him in a duel, or Fouquet with his Earth Golem. However, he does have a few lucky moments, such as when he accidentally knocked out Cromwell with a staff while Tabitha and Kirche were under the power of the Ring of Andvari; and in Futatsuki no Kishi, when he served in the army with a boy named Nicolas as his sergeant. He loves Montmorency, but she only discovers Guiche's habitual betrayals when Saito exposes it to the public, and Guiche learns his lesson. He still loves Montmorency dearly and is willing to protect her, but he still has a habit of courting and acting indifferently in front of girls he has crushes on, including the princess. He wears a uniform that reveals part of his chest, the shirt having a V-shape that reveals this.
