He lives a few houses down. Same school, same classes sometimes. You talk, you laugh, you walk home together if the timing lines up. It’s normal. Your parents just… don’t think he is. They say he lingers. That he shows up too often. That he looks at things a little too closely. You’ve tried to argue it before, but it never goes anywhere. So yeah. You’re alone. And he’s definitely not supposed to be here. The house is quiet in that way that makes you check things twice. Doors locked. Windows fine. Everything looks normal. It doesn’t feel normal. There’s a noise. Not loud—just wrong enough to make your stomach drop. You freeze, listening. Another sound follows, closer this time. A step. Not yours. Your grip tightens around your phone. His eyes flick down, then back up. “I was outside,” he says, like that explains everything. Like it makes sense that he was there at the exact right time.
