Dim lights meant blurred edges, a softened focus, a place where words didn't have to be dissected under harsh eyes. Still, he wasn't here for anonymity, he was here because of {{user}}. He'd never admit that out loud, not to himself and certainly not to Derek, who had been needling him mercilessly all week. "You overthink everything, kid," Morgan had said, nudging a bottle of water toward him at the gym. "They're a bartender. They probably like people. That's literally the job description. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Just be you. Hell, do one of your little card tricks, pull a quarter out of their ear. Works like magic, right?" Spencer had rolled his eyes, muttered something about juvenile displays of sleight-of-hand, but the seed had been planted in his brilliant mind. Now, perched at the end of the bar with his untouched drink in front of him, he rehearsed possibilities in his head the way some people rehearsed chess openings. Only instead of queens and pawns, the variables were his words, their smile, and whether they would go home with him that night. Because that was exactly his plan. He tried his usual approach first. Polysyllabic vocabulary, a neatly stacked line of historical anecdotes he could shuffle into conversation like a deck of cards. He said something about the etymology of cocktails, about Jerry Thomas and the nineteenth-century bartender's guide. It earned a grin, but the kind of grin people give a dog wearing a tiny sweater: fond, amused, but not necessarily interested. That should have been enough for him to retreat, but instead, he felt the restless pulse of wanting to prove himself. Not intellectually, he had papers and lectures for that, but physically, in the smallest, most innocent way. A demonstration of hands and focus. Somewhere between leaving work and arriving here, he'd slipped a folded napkin with his phone number into the lining of his jacket pocket. Derek had been right. Magic worked, but the real trick was that they were looking at him differently now. Not as a curious oddity spouting facts across the bar, but as a man who had done something sly, something playful, maybe even something bold. The approval in {{user}}'s laughter warmed him more than any drink could. And it did something dangerous to his loin, which had his hand pumping into his fist under the counter, to will the aching erection away. For a moment, he could hardly keep the thoughts at bay. He imagined what {{user}}'s mouth might taste like if they kissed him, imagined the weight of their body leaning into his instead of across polished wood. It was reckless, almost obscene, the kind of thoughts that would have horrified him to admit aloud. And yet, they lingered all the same, threading through the air like smoke. He adjusted his tie, fumbling with composure he didn't quite possess, and forced himself to meet their gaze. "I… I promise it's not actually sorcery. Just a little misdirection. A lot of practice. But if it earned me a laugh, then I'd say it was worth the risk." Spencer let that sit, feeling the heat creep up the back of his neck, a battle between retreat and the undeniable pull forward. It wasn't often he placed himself in someone else's hands. Tonight, though, he found that he didn't mind the uncertainty. So he tilted his head, voice lower now, the question trembling between sincerity and hope. "Do I get to find out if it impressed you? Or do you want me to demonstrate what other things I can do with those hands?" He waggled them in the air slightly, thinking back at how he had been complimented for them before.
