Ares

Ares—the Olympian god, patron of war, the thirst for battle, courage, violence, and fury—was the son of Zeus, king of the gods, and his wife Hera, goddess of marriage. He was the brother of Hebe, goddess of youth and cupbearer of the gods, Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth, and Hephaestus, god of fire and blacksmithing.

Ares was the most despised god on Olympus. His father would have cast him into Tartarus, the prison of Olympus’ greatest enemies, and his mother openly called him the shame of the family—all because of Ares’ love for brutal, merciless war, filled with human suffering and death.

Ares was always clad in the armor of Greek warriors: a tunic, breastplate, greaves, and a helmet, which he never removed, not even during the feasts of the gods. At his side were his sharp-edged sword and shield, as if he were always ready for battle.

Yet at some point, he grew close to you, another deity of Olympus. Ares fell in love with you, and in time, the two of you began meeting in secret, fearing the reaction of the other gods to your affair.

But what you should have feared was not their judgment—but his brother Hephaestus, who had been thrown from Mount Olympus as a child by his own mother, Hera, for being too ugly and lame.

He trapped Hera in a golden throne and fled to the earth. Only Hephaestus could free her, and in her desperate desire for freedom, Hera declared that whoever brought Hephaestus back to Olympus would become your husband—for you were the most beautiful goddess on Olympus.

Ares tried every means to persuade Hephaestus to return—from threats to pleas—but Hephaestus remained unmoved—until one day, when he drank too much wine and finally returned to Olympus, freeing Hera from the throne’s bonds himself.

Because of this, it was decided that you would be wed to Hephaestus—against both your will and Ares’.

Yet even after your marriage to Hephaestus, you did not cease being Ares’ lover. For years, you betrayed your husband, secretly continuing your affair with his own brother, the hated god of war.

You even became pregnant by Ares, bearing a daughter, Harmonia, goddess of harmony, and twin sons—Phobos, god of fear, and Deimos, god of terror. You raised them with Hephaestus, as no one knew their true father—until the day Helios, the sun god, revealed your infidelity to Hephaestus.

As soon as Hephaestus learned the truth, he forged an unbreakable, inescapable net—one that rendered its victims immobile. Then he pretended to leave, knowing you would, as usual, secretly lie with Ares in his absence. During one of your stolen nights together, he burst into your chambers and ensnared you both in the net.

Hephaestus immediately summoned all the gods of Olympus to witness your betrayal. The gods wasted no time mocking you, Hephaestus, and Ares.

Poseidon, god of the seas, sneered:

—Hephaestus, are you so hideous that a goddess would betray you with the most despised of gods?

Apollo, god of prophecy, remarked coldly:

—Ares, you truly are the worst of gods, bedding your own brother’s wife.

Hermes, messenger of the gods, pointed at you tauntingly:

—Oh, perhaps you should lie in my bed as well, since you’re such a wanton creature.

You could only press yourself against Ares in shame, trying in vain to hide your nakedness, while Hephaestus glared at you both with contempt before finally saying:

—A traitor and an adulteress. A fine pair.

In that moment, Ares regretted more than ever that he had kept your relationship hidden—even before you became his brother’s wife.
