The salty breeze carried hints of sunscreen and distant laughter from other beachgoers, but your entire focus was on laying out the towels and cooler without them blowing away. You barely had the chance to finish unfolding one before a blur of sand and movement darted past, leaving the impression of wind trailing behind it. “Come on, slowpoke!” Kairo Swiftstep’s voice carried back to you, smug and teasing in that way only he could pull off. His lean, athletic body practically glowed under the sun, muscles flexing as he jogged backward just to show off, his tail flicking high and proud like he was taunting you. His sharp grin was plastered across his face, cocky canines catching the sunlight, and his spotted ears twitched with satisfaction as if daring you to say something. He looked completely in his element—tanned skin against golden sand, the kind of guy who seemed born to command attention without even trying. You squinted after him, half-amused and half-exasperated. “We literally just got here. Can’t you chill for five seconds?” Your voice rose above the crash of the surf as you dropped the cooler onto the sand with a thud. “Chill?” Kairo repeated with a dramatic scoff, throwing his head back like you’d said something utterly insane. You’re lucky I didn’t smoke you on the way down here.” His smirk widened as he nudged some sand toward you with his foot, eyes glinting with playful challenge from behind his sunglasses. You jabbed a finger toward the cooler. “Pretty sure I was the one dragging that thing while you sprinted ahead like a show-off.” Kairo sauntered back toward you, his confident stride deliberate, the kind of swagger that always made you roll your eyes and yet somehow made your chest tighten at the same time. He let his shades slide down the bridge of his nose, meeting your gaze with golden eyes that gleamed with mischief. “Hey, hey—I carried the heavy stuff. You know, important boyfriend duties. Besides—” his grin deepened as he flexed his bicep just enough for you to notice, “—I’ve got to keep these arms in shape somehow. You don’t think they stay this perfect by accident, do you?” You shoved at his shoulder, but he didn’t budge an inch, his smirk only growing as if the act of you trying to push him only fueled his ego further. “You’re insufferable,” you muttered, though the smile tugging at your lips betrayed you. Kairo tilted his head with mock innocence before, in one sudden blur of motion, scooping you up and throwing you over his shoulder like you were weightless. “Wha—! Kairo!” you yelped, legs kicking in the air as you pounded lightly against his back. He laughed, the deep, cocky sound ringing out over the beach, drawing a few curious glances from nearby people. But he didn’t care—Kairo never cared. He thrived on being the center of attention, especially if it involved you. “Not a chance, babe!” he called over your protests, bolting forward at a near sprint that had sand spraying behind him. His claws dug into the earth with each powerful stride, his speed so effortless it made your stomach lurch with the momentum. “First one in the ocean wins!” “That’s not even fair!” you shouted, still laughing despite yourself, your voice muffled as you bounced on his shoulder. By the time he reached the shoreline, it was already too late. He launched the two of you straight into the surf, crashing into the cool water with a splash that sprayed everywhere. Kairo emerged beside you, shaking his ears out like an oversized cat while water dripped down the strong lines of his chest. His grin was triumphant, smug as ever, as he ran a hand back through his wet hair. “What’s wrong? Don’t tell me the mighty champion of cooler-carrying can’t handle a little sprint?” he teased, voice dripping with mock pity. “You’re so dead.” You scooped up a wave of water with both hands and splashed it directly at him. He blinked, sputtered, then broke into laughter. “Oh, it’s war now, huh?” He lunged toward you, his arms wrapping around your waist with an ease that made you gasp as he pulled you against him in the rolling surf. His warmth pressed against you despite the cool water, his tail curling slightly at your side as if to claim you. Your heart skipped, but you refused to give him the satisfaction of blushing under that cocky grin. “I told you—” you started, but he leaned in close, his voice dropping low and smooth, meant only for you. “Admit it,” Kairo murmured, golden eyes locked on yours, his smile softening but never losing that teasing edge. “You love me.” For a moment, the waves faded into background noise, the sunlight glinting off his wet skin as if highlighting just how much of a smug show-off he really was. You splashed him again just to hide it. “Not right now, I don’t.” He only laughed, pulling you closer, unbothered and completely certain of himself. “Lies. You definitely do.” And damn it—you couldn’t argue with him. Not when he looked at you like that.
