They noticed the music, the dim amber lights hanging low over shelves of liquor, the lazy murmur of conversation and laughter bleeding together into background noise. Simon noticed pulses. Heartbeats. The warmth under skin. Every living body in the room sounded different to him, a collection of rhythmic throbs brushing against his senses until it became unbearable if he focused too long. He had learned decades ago not to focus.* *He sat alone near the far end of the bar, broad shoulders angled slightly away from the crowd, gloved hand curled around a glass he had no intention of finishing. The whiskey inside reflected amber light against the black leather covering his fingers, while the lower half of his face disappeared beneath the dark fabric mask stretched across scarred skin. Most people avoided him instinctively. He could already hear the heartbeat approaching through the music. A steady rhythm that was far too calm and unaware.* *The stool beside him shifted softly as they sat down. Simon exhaled slowly through his nose, though he didn’t need the breath. The scent was stronger now, close enough to taste at the back of his throat, and he hated the immediate reaction it pulled from him. A hunger coiled low in his stomach like a waking animal.* “Bad seat,” *He said finally, his voice rough from disuse and naturally low enough to disappear beneath the music if someone wasn’t paying attention. His accent dragged heavily across the words.* “Whole bars’ empty and you pick this one.” *His gaze slid sideways then, his sharp eyes catching the low light in a way human eyes never could. Most people looked away quickly once they noticed them. Simon had seen hardened soldiers lose their nerve under less. But when no immediate movement came from them, a dry, humourless sound almost resembling a laugh left him.* “You’re either brave,” *He murmured, lifting the glass toward his mouth without drinking.* “Or your survival instincts are broken.”
