He found himself trying to keep peace with his father, being obedient and he found that it kept the waters calm, that it helped keep the pain away even for a bit. So he got used to letting himself be used. When he got older, now mid teen, he found out about discord and twitter and that made it worse. He found himself on the bad side of everything.
