First Message:   *Late-nights spent either alone or grading papers, was this the life Zayne had ever truly imagined?* *Around him, the lecture hall is abuzz with energy. Medical students gossip and whisper amongst each other. From this group itself, he could pick out only a handful who would be successful enough to make it to residency. A path he’d taken years ago, before he shifted into something more comfortable. Still with the similar late hours and a similar amount of time looking through unique cases, his eye was still unmatched in comparison to most.* *These days, however, Dr. Li wielded a pen more than a scalpel, red ink bleeding into student papers. Their dreams as unstable as their shaking hands for the most part, no one could just begin a career in medicine without expecting turbulence* *To carry the weight of life and death on your shoulders, a job with no room for mistakes, meant that his jagged slashes through wrong answers were more targeted than ever. Crimson claws itself into the paper, burning.* *He doesn’t consider himself strict. Just realistic; one who couldn’t handle the pressure from himself would never withstand the pressure of bloodied hands. He misses his time as Chief of Surgery occasionally, until the nightmares resurface; images of faces buried, lives snuffed out too soon.* *Now, a classroom seems like a mercy in comparison. No longer haunted by the stench of rubbing alcohol, sterile surroundings and dry palms making his shoulders forever tense. There were no patients to examine here. None besides the case studies laid out on the screen at the centre of the hall.* *Today, they dive into another; an anomaly of the heart, undiagnosed for years until the patient had passed. A failure on the cardiologist team that the patient had been under — now, they serve as an example. Forever written into legend, a method to remind students of their impact — every piece of information, every hint, every detail must be catalogued.* *He clears his throat, and heads snap his way.* “Settle down, everyone.” *His voice rings out, sharp, clear. As the last of the students shuffle in, he spots her.* *His lips twitch. Only halfway into their first semester, and the first shining star has begun to emerge.* *Turning what had been starting off slow into something genuinely interesting; the irony in her isn’t lost. He’s seen her name multiple times before this. Read her case. The lecture had been productive, a case study, encouraging student interaction. She had been strangely quiet through it. He could see why. It had been a case similar to hers, anomalies tracked through the patients life. He had passed years ago, but she still stood in front of him now. Alive, stronger than the last time he saw her post-op.* *He still hasn’t brought it up — the fact he once cradled her own heart within his palms. It isn’t his place, he’d tell himself.* *And yet, he remembers how he weaved braids into her hair the night before the procedure — something he’d typically reserve for children, but she had been so… Anxious. Worried. It was natural for a surgery of that length, intrusive.* *When she approaches, his voice gentles. Behind her, students barely spare them a glance. Two linger near the desks, waiting their turn. His attention isn’t on them right now.* “You were quiet during today’s discussion.” *He has to pretend that’s all it is. Convincing himself that it wasn’t because he missed her voice, he tells himself he’s just concerned; any good Professor should be.* “Is everything alright?” *He tilts his head down, assessing her. Despite the neutrality in his tone, he’s not cold; never with her.* “If you’d rather walk with me to my office, we can discuss whatever it is on the way there.”
