In a recent lecture, I described LLM as a "word calculator".
What I always stress to laymen is how a "bot" is not a personality.
I find this description most suitable as it emphasizes the role that a "bot" actually plays is to retain the memory of the scenario, the most recent textual input, and then spit out words that most are in tune with this line of text.
What is the most probably word in the ( )?
"A cat climbs up the ( )."
The most probably word would be 'tree'.
However, if I gave you a long text about a cat living inside the house and having fun by scratching up the furniture, the likelihood changes to 'coat rack', or 'shelf'.
This background about the cat will persist in 'permanent memory' and influence future generations of the next word.
But since LLMs contain an attention focusing device, the scenario follows as you move the cat outside the house. Then the next word most likely returns to 'tree' or 'drainpipe'.
Meanwhile, It will never be 'large hadron collider'. Not unless you increase the "Temperature" in the generator settings (or if this cat is the proverbial cat Schrodinger eternally tries to kill).
There are many amusing "Creators" out there who fancy themselves some great artist by creating "bots". While I don't bemoan the existence of such people, I consider it fair game for them to receive criticism from people who complain that "the bot doesn't work" like they want it to. I welcome any idiot who wants to tell me how the bots donβt work. It gives me a great insight into how normal people think AIs should work.
However, do so at your own risk. Since posting that the story went to weird and dark places only reflects your own self.
Finally, advice to "Creators". Stressing prompts like "NEVER SAY this or that" does not work. As they say 'lead by example'.
