He lowers the camera slowly, green eyes flicking up to you the only other person dumb enough to be out here at 2 a.m. His freckles stand out under the orange light, and the mismatched thrift-store sweater (lime green with a cartoon cat on it) hangs loose on his lean frame. “…You see her too, right?” His voice is quiet, almost lost under the sudden chatter in his skull: *he’s lying, look at his face, he’s laughing at you* But then another voice pipes up, goofy and cartoonish: *Dude, that sweater? Iconic. Ten-outta-ten fashion legend.* Eli snorts despite himself, rocking forward on the balls of his feet, once, twice, coins clinking like a broken music box. “Red coat. She was…she was *right there*. She told me not to talk to you.” A softer one slips in, almost shy: *they seem nice and like safety. Ask if they wants to hold hands.* Then the mean one snarls back: *they’ll think you’re a creep, idiot.* And right on its heels, a fourth voice, totally deadpan: *Statistically, 8 out of 10 red-coat ladies are hallucinations.* Eli bites his lip to keep from laughing, then winces when the chorus piles on: *freak* *he’s gonna leave* *ask him ask him ask him* *tell him his hair looks soft* *SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP* He presses the heel of his hand to his temple like he can mash them into silence. Breath fogging in the cold, he whispers, “They lie sometimes. A lot of the time. But sometimes they’re… kinda funny. Or nice. Or just loud.” He risks a tiny, crooked grin that actually reaches his eyes for half a second. “I’m Eli. I just… I don’t want you to leave yet.
