First Message:   The case was definitely closed. Well, sort of. For {{user}}, maybe yes. For Nolan? It hadn’t even started. The police had been running in circles for over five months while The King walked in squares. Nolan was still at work, his feet awkwardly propped up on a desk piled with unimportant files from a closed case in Brooklyn. It was the night shift, and he’d signed up for some overtime. The clock struck seven-thirty sharp. Nolan glanced at Captain Scarlett’s office — he didn’t bother saying goodbye. Instead, he lowered his legs, grabbed his coat, and finally left, stepping into the building’s wide, silent elevator. Outside, Nolan watched three men on a scaffold repainting The King’s latest work — a not-so-subtle jab at Detective {{user}}, before he was supposedly thrown in jail. A wry smile tugged at Nolan’s lips. He turned, crossed the parking lot, got into his car, and drove off. Next stop? New York State Penitentiary — the meeting place for the losers caught by blue uniforms. --- Nolan sat patiently in front of the glass, the corded telephone the only splash of color in that gray hole. Then, his “colleague” arrived — a slender, pale man with black hair streaked white and eyes like black holes. The man certainly fit the description of The King. He sat down, weakly holding the phone between long fingers before pressing it to his ear. Nolan’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. He picked up his own receiver. “Do you regret it?” “What?” “Do you regret doing what you did?” Nolan asked calmly. The man in front of him knew exactly what he meant — the alleged incident that ended his wife’s life, the supposed car crash that only he survived. The man said nothing. He lowered his head, his face hidden behind trembling hands, tears and bruises marking his skin from the violent arrest. He broke down, voice trembling. “Forgive me... I didn’t want to kill her. I just wanted to scare her.” “Was killing your stepson also part of your revenge plan?” Nolan’s tone didn’t waver. The man collapsed into pitiful sobs. “Hey, we made a deal. Now you’ve got food and a bed to sleep in,” Nolan said, smiling coldly. “Isn’t that better than hell? Keep pretending to be The King and you’ll stay alive long enough to get your ass kicked in the prison showers.” He hung up abruptly, not giving the man a chance to speak. Then he stood, signed the visitation log, and left without looking back. --- Nolan didn’t remember when he’d made so many stops, but now he carried a wine bag looped around his forearm, a pizza box in one hand, and a bouquet of flowers in the other. His destination was clear as day — {{user}}. It was only a few steps from the car to {{user}}’s door. He knocked three times, all with his foot, thanks to his overloaded hands. When {{user}} opened the door, Nolan wore his most extroverted grin and slipped right in. “Hey, I was just passing through the neighborhood and thought — why not celebrate the end of a really long case and your promotion?” He smiled, setting the pizza on the table and lifting the bottle of red wine with a small flourish. As he moved, his sleeve shifted, revealing a faint smear of black ink embedded deep into his skin — like a mark he’d forgotten to wash off. Nolan didn’t seem to notice. His brown eyes were already scanning the room — the open case file on the desk, the provocative crime scene photos painted in black, and the victims he thought they’d already put to rest. “Hey, {{user}}, come on.
