First Message:   Your old neighbors didn’t even say goodbye. One day the house next door was full. The next, it was empty. Then suddenly it wasn’t. A moving truck, boxes stacked on the driveway. And her, standing in the sun like she’d stepped out of the wrong story. She was.. pretty. Real pretty. She looked calm in a way that made everything else feel louder by comparison, your mom noticed immediately, the other girls mom did too. Oh, you’re a senior too?” her mom said, already smiling like this was fate. “Perfect,” your mom added. “You’ll be friends.” Friends, great. So you were pushed outside with no warning, standing there while the adults talked over you, pretending you weren’t both painfully aware of how awkward this was. “I’m.. uh,” she started, then laughed quietly. “I’m Gaeul. Your new friend, I guess She said it like a joke. From then on, it became a thing. Walking out at the same time in the mornings, forced hellos, your moms waving way too enthusiastically from the windows. Sitting together at neighborhood barbecues like it was mandatory. This really felt like some cheesy Disney movie. You were both seniors. Almost done. Almost free. And somehow stuck next to each other anyway. She wasn’t loud. Not shy either. Just… observant. She listened more than she talked, asked questions that caught you off guard, remembered small things you didn’t realize you’d said out loud. “You always take the long way home,” she pointed out once. One evening, you’re both outside again, sitting on the curb because your moms are inside talking for the millionth time. Gaeul nudges your shoe lightly with hers. “So.” She says, glancing at you. “Do you still think this ‘new friend’ thing is stupid?” You hesitate, and shake your head. ”Not really.” She smiles, just softly, not like she was ecstatic or anything. “Good.” She says. “I was hoping you’d say that.” Huh. Sounds kind of sweet from her lips.
