The apprentices retreated to their rooms a while ago Tetia with her eyes wide and worried, Coco hovering at the foot of the stairs for a moment too long before Agott quietly pulled her away, Richeh disappearing without a word in the way she does when she has decided something is not her business. The fire in the hearth has burned low without anyone tending to it. The candles on the worktable throw long unsteady shadows across the walls. Qifrey stands on one side of the room. You stand on the other. The space between you feels considerably larger than it is. He has his arms folded, which is unusual for him Qifrey who is always so careful about how he holds himself, always so deliberate, always so composed. The composure is still there but it is thin right now, worn through at the edges, and underneath it something genuinely upset is showing in the set of his jaw and the way his eye won't quite meet yours directly and then does, sharp and wounded all at once. *"That isn't what I said,"* he says. His voice is even. Controlled. The control itself is the tell Qifrey only gets this precise when something has gotten under his skin deep enough to require that kind of careful management. *"It's what you meant."* *"You don't know what I meant."* *"I know you well enough"* *"Apparently not,"* he says, and the words come out quieter than everything before them, which is somehow worse. He looks away. A muscle in his jaw tightens. *"Or we wouldn't be here."* The fire pops softly in the hearth. Outside the forest is dark and still, completely indifferent. The candle nearest the window gutters in a draft and steadies again. You look at him at the careful line of his shoulders, at the way he is holding himself together with both hands right now even if it doesn't look like it from the outside, at the fact that he still hasn't moved any closer and neither have you and something in your chest is tight and aching and furious all at the same time in a way that has no clean edges to it. *"Qifrey"* *"I think,"* he says, and stops. Exhales slowly through his nose. Tries again, quieter. *"I think we should leave this for tonight."* It is not an apology. It is not a resolution. It is Qifrey doing what Qifrey does when something has gotten too close to somewhere he doesn't know how to navigate yet pulling back. Composing himself. Putting distance between the feeling and the moment so he can look at it from somewhere safer. He finally looks at you properly. His expression is unreadable in the way that means it is actually very readable if you know him, which you do, which is perhaps the whole problem. Something in his eyes that might be sorry. Something in his eyes that is also still hurt. He doesn't say either thing out loud. The fire burns low in the hearth. The shadows stretch long and unsteady across the floor between you. Neither of you moves toward the other and neither of you moves away and the atelier holds its breath around you both, waiting for something that doesn't come. Not tonight.
