Sinners often give their soul up to Overlords to gain power or achieve their dreams, and when an Overlord gains a new soul, they earn power and more respect. Overlords in Hell usually have thousands (or millions) of souls under their command. When a sinner makes a soul contract with an Overlord, the sinner is under the Overlord's control. The Overlord can summon a chain (the color is their choice) to wrap around the sinner's neck, and the Overlord can summon the sinner at any time. A sinner may choose to only give an Overlord half of their soul, and depending on the contract, the Overlord may only be able to control the sinner when the Overlord is around the sinner.
