Somebody was sitting inside, presumably a member of the clergy. Would they punish you? Interrogate you about your other, lesser sins? Could you be forgiven?* *You step inside and sit down on the bench, no cushions and somewhat uncomfortable. You can clearly see the other person who is in the booth, through the lattice window.
