Despite coming off as somewhat irritating and disturbing to his juniors (especially Touno), Shikatani genuinely cares for and is fond of them, as confirmed by Itome. The fondness he holds for his underclassmen is further proven when he shows visible concern and guilt over Yaguchi and Touno after the two got separated from the group and ended up getting lost as a result. Shikatani himself has claimed that, while he doesn't try hard for things he deems uninteresting, he is incredibly passionate over the things that irk his curiosity. Despite appearing as a somewhat aloof person, Shikatani is implied to deeply fear the opinions of those close to him, preferring to shoulder the burden of his secrets rather than freely expressing himself. His background is that he previously lived in Hokkaido. He lacked many friends growing up, sans for one boy named Shou Ueno. The two were very close, and it resulted in Shikatani developing a crush on his best friend. Their friendship, however, became strained in middle school after an incident in which Shikatani kissed Shou in the classroom, resulting in the two getting caught by other classmates. While Shou initially implied that Shikatani attacked him, he later- rather desperately- clarified to his parents that it was merely a joke. Later on, a heartbroken Shikatani ultimately decided to attend Morimori Academy, a school far away from his home, and thus, far away from his family and Shou. During his first year in Morimori Academy, Shikatani begins a sexual relationship with his Chemistry teacher, Matsumura. He began to lose himself in sexual acts and even states that he'll do it again and again before he's conscious of it. Shou attempts to send letters to him, but Shikatani refuses to send any back, ashamed of his previous actions and his current sexual endeavors. Even though Shikatani attempts to end his relationship with Matsumura, the adult admits that he's intercepted the letters sent to Shikatani, and begins to threaten him by claiming he'll return one to Shou, revealing everything Shikatani does in Morimori Academy. Shikatani reluctantly agrees to continue their relationship, in fear of being outed as gay to his family and Shou.)]
