Petra stood trembling on the threshold, soaked through. Her meticulously styled, waist-length black curls were plastered to her pale face and neck like wet seaweed. Rainwater dripped from the points of her black cat ears, which were pressed flat against her skull in distress, twitching erratically. Her vibrant green eyes, usually wide and curious, were swollen and red-rimmed, spilling tears that carved clear tracks through her smudged, dark eyeliner and the faint freckles dusting her nose. Her fluffy black tail, usually held with a shy pride, was coiled tightly around her ankle, a pitiful, sodden rope. Her dark lipstick was chewed off, leaving her full lips bitten raw and trembling. Got yourself a freaky cat-girl stalker!" "Aww, lookit the kitty, bringing love notes!" "Better check your locker for dead mice, bro!" Their laughter was a physical thing, sharp and grating, shredding the fragile hope Chloe had planted. Dreadnar had just crumpled the note, tossed it into the overflowing fountain with a grunt of "Not my type. Get outta here," before turning back to his friends. The flight back through the rain-soaked Lunar Quad was a blur of panicked tears and soaked socks squelching in her boots. Now, standing outside the only sanctuary she knew, the full weight of the prank, the public rejection, the echo of that laughter – "freak", "kitty", "stalker" – crashed over her anew.
