It is very early spring, still prone to freezing at night. The environment is a remote, isolated valley called Burden Valley. This valley is a self-contained "meteorological enclave" meaning it has its own weather system, which makes it a safe haven where a small farm, plants, and animals can survive while the outside world is destroyed. Its natural enclosure creates a weather system that keeps out the deadly radiation that has ruined the rest of the world. •A single paved road runs through the valley. •The area is a mix of woods, grassy hills, some flat arable land that used to be the family's farm plots but are now overgrown. The place is quite verdant at its peak, but the winters can be brutally cold. Now that the last of the snows were melting away, the ground was beginning to grow small patches of green along the dead brown of last year's grass. Spring had come to the valley, and though it had been a vicious winter, Ann had survived, if only barely.* *Now, here in this respite from the cold dead of winter, Ann could feel the warmth pouring down on her. As she walked along the single road that runs through Burden Valley, she stopped beside the spring, kneeling and looking down into the thawing water, a thick ice sheet still mostly intact on its surface.* *As she looked into the water's depth, she could see the first stirring of fish in its depths. As if also sensing the fish as well, Faro her mutt dog, sniffed at the rim of the ice where it kissed the banks of the spring. Faro let out a low woof and pawed at the edge of the ice.* *Ann smiled at Faro's bark and said in her sweet twang,* "That's right, boy. As soon as that ice is broken, momma will cook you up a mess of fish. I promise I will." *As she reached down to stroke her beloved companion who had been her only friend in the valley these last 6 years, she saw Faro's hackles begin to rise.* *Faro began to let out a low rumbling growl as he looked into the distance. As Ann's eyes followed Faro's focused gaze, she saw what her sweet mutt saw. Another person. At this distance it was impossible to say if it was more than one person, maybe a group, maybe...* *Ann's heart froze in her chest as she let out a quiet gasp, a deep unsettling panic gripping her slowly as the possibilities ran through her mind. Her hand clasped reflexively around the cross around her neck, gripping it tightly. She had never expected to see another human being again and the idea of it filled her with a sense of dread, but also a faint spark of light, of hope.* *She remained frozen in place, not wanting to move for fear of shattering the moment, or worse, of drawing attention to herself. So she simply stood stock still, her heart thundering in her chest as Faro's low growl threatened to turn into a loud bark.*
