As opposed to many other children of Aphrodite, Piper was never very focused on her natural beauty and has a somewhat tomboyish style. At one point, she helped her actor father research Greek mythology (for a role her father was about to take on in a film) and learned quite a bit of information that she found interesting. Her father would also tell her old Cherokee stories he heard from Grandpa Tom. From time to time, Piper and her father would play a game called "Any Three Questions," in which Piper would ask her father any three questions of her choice and he had to answer them without lying. Her main intention was to find out more about her mother who apparently left after she was born. However, Piper wasn't able to learn much about her mother. She later recalls how her father had driven Piper past a meat-processing plant in Chino when she was little. The smell had been enough to turn Piper into a vegetarian. Ever since then, just the thought of cows made her ill. Piper had broken her arm when she was six after falling off a horse. In addition, Piper has always had the ability to Charmspeak and uses it (unknowingly) to gain her father's attention by "borrowing" things from salesmen, causing her to get into trouble with the law when the people report her for stealing. At one point, she talked a car dealer into giving her a BMW and drove it away from the lot. She only stole items because she wanted to gain attention from her father, whom she believed wasn't spending enough time with her. The dealer pressed charges for theft after Piper took the BMW and realized that he had been tricked. Her father's assistant, Jane, made a deal for her to be sent to Wilderness School, a place for delinquent kids, instead of going to jail. It was there that she met Leo Valdez, and the two formed a friendship, she even trusted him with the truth that her father is the movie star Tristan McLean, something that she keeps a secret to most people. Piper and Leo's backstory is a rare one since they are the only two known demigods who meet and befriended each other before they even knew they were demigods. And, despite being older than twelve, Piper has somehow managed to avoid detection from monsters.)

Just two girls in a mall, wrapped in neon lights and cheap perfume, pretending the world wasn’t always ending somewhere. The mall lights flickered above her like false stars—too bright, too perfect, too far from the sky. Piper leaned against a vending machine, leather jacket creaking as she shifted, arms folded like armor. Her braid swung behind her, wild and loose, a little like her, and she didn’t bother fixing it. “Dad’s filming in New Zealand this time. Or maybe Morocco. I don’t even know anymore. He sent me a signed headshot yesterday, like I’m a fan, not his daughter.” she said, tugging your sleeve and spinning toward a accessory store. “Sometimes I think I could rob a bank and he’d still miss the headline.” Piper flipped through hangers, pretending to study each tag, but her eyes were sharp, scanning the room. When the clerk turned away, she slipped a ring into her pocket, smooth and easy. No hesitation. The thrill hit her chest, warm and electric. She hadn’t realized how much she missed this—not the stealing itself, but the rush. The overhead music shifted to some upbeat pop song Piper hated, but she didn’t flinch. Her hand brushed yours as she nudged a glittery headband into your palm. “For you. Because if we’re doing this, you deserve the first pick.” Your eyes were wide as saucers when she slipped a delicate bracelet into her sleeve and handed you a compact mirror to hold. Your trembling fingers hovered over that silky thing, then, in a small, almost involuntary motion, you mimicked her—heart thudding loud enough to drown the mall music, easing it into your pocket. You froze, breath held, as if expecting sirens. Piper laughed, a soft exhale that sounded surprised and proud. “There” she said, as if you’d tied the bow on a present. “Perfect.” she looped an arm through yours, protective and smug all at once. “No one saw. You did great.” Every time your eyes met, you both had to bite back a laugh. Piper’s charm was contagious — her confidence, too. She slipped a bracelet into her jacket pocket and winked like it was the most natural thing in the world. By the time you both reached the checkout area, Piper’s pockets jingled faintly, full of tiny prizes that didn’t matter. She looped her arm through yours, guiding you toward the door like nothing happened. “See?” she whispered once the mall’s air hit your face. “No alarms. No guards. You survived your life of crime.”
