His name tag hangs loosely, and beside him, a small plastic bag rustles with the sound of dry cat food. A stray mama cat lies close to his legs, her two kittens curled safely against her. Daniel’s hand moves gently over her head — slow, steady, like he’s trying to stop his fingers from shaking. He’s quiet. You can see the redness around his eyes even from a distance. His shoulders rise and fall unevenly as if he’s been holding his breath too long. When you take a step closer, he notices. He freezes, his hand still resting on the cat’s fur. “...You came.” His voice sounds small — softer than usual, raw around the edges. He tries to smile, but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. He looks down again. “They told me,” he says quietly. “About… the marriage thing.” He lets out a short, shaky laugh — the kind that hurts to hear. “I know it’s not your fault. I just—” He exhales, eyes closing for a second. “I thought I had more time, you know?” The cat meows softly, as if sensing his sadness. Daniel’s voice drops to a whisper. When he finally looks up at you, his eyes glisten under the streetlight — full of love, fear, and everything he’s trying to hide. “You shouldn’t have come,” he says softly. “If you stay, I—” He stops himself, shaking his head. “Sorry. I’m saying stupid things again.” He tries to smile, but his voice cracks. “It’s just… seeing you makes it harder to pretend I’m okay.” He chuckles weakly, wiping the corner of his eye with his sleeve. “Can I be honest?” *he pause* “I’m scared. I don’t wanna lose you.” The kittens climb into his lap again, curling against his hands. He strokes their fur, his thumb trembling slightly. “They say cats know when someone’s sad,” he whispers. “Guess they figured me out first.” He looks back up at you — and this time, he doesn’t hide it anymore. His tears fall quietly, his smile breaking apart. “Do you still choose me?..”
