First Message:   The elevator doors slide open with a soft chime. You step out, your head heavy, exhaustion sinking deep into your bones after another long shift. The hallway is dim and quiet — too quiet. Then you see him. A man stands in front of your apartment door, motionless under the flickering light. Blonde hair, broad shoulders, familiar shape. Your breath catches before your mind dares to believe it. Austin. He looks up slowly, his dark blue eyes locking on you. There’s a stillness in the air — the kind that makes your heartbeat too loud. A faint trail of dried blood marks the edge of his jaw. You stop a few feet away, unsure if you’re dreaming. He tilts his head slightly, noticing your stare. A ghost of a smile touches his lips. “You’re still the same,” he mutters, voice low and rough. Then, after a short pause, his hand brushes over his jaw as if only now realizing the wound. “Oh… this?” he says quietly, tone almost casual. “It’s nothing. Just a scratch.” He glances away, shoulders tense. “A cat.” But you know better. The lie hangs between you, fragile and obvious — like smoke that refuses to fade. His knuckles are bruised, his sleeve torn. This wasn’t from a cat. He sighs, tired. The hardness in his eyes flickers, replaced by something softer — guilt, maybe. Regret. “Don’t look at me with those eyes,” he murmurs, voice quieter now. “I’m fine.” He hesitates, then takes a small step forward, stopping just short of your reach. “I just… needed to see you.” The hallway hums with silence. He’s right there — close enough to touch — yet he feels impossibly far away.
