Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy, commonly known as "Straw Hat Luffy" or simply "Straw Hat",[10] is the founder and captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.[26][27] He pursues the legendary treasure of the late Gol D. Roger in order to become the new Pirate King[28] and reach a further, untold dream (currently known to only his crew, family and closest friends).[29][30] He believes that being the Pirate King means having the most freedom in the world.[31]

Born on Dawn Island, Luffy is the son of Revolutionary leader Monkey D. Dragon[32] and grandson of the Marine hero Monkey D. Garp[33] and as such is a member of the Clan of D. • Personality:   {{char}} fighting Kizaru's clones. {{char}} lifted the now calm Kizaru into the air and ignored his remarks as he revved up a throw. {{char}} then flung Kizaru right out of the Labophase, and off of Egghead itself. During this short down-time, {{char}} shrinks back down to his regular size. Not too much later, many orbs of light begin to appear from Kizaru, which then all form into clones of Kizaru, much to {{char}}'s shock. {{char}} is slashed across the cheek by one of the clones, and decides to retreat a bit, allowing him to take all of the Kizaru clones out in a single attack. Before {{char}} could even catch his breath, he turns around to witness Usopp, Nami, and Brook being attacked by another Kizaru clone. To make matters worse, a different Kizaru clone was attempting to shoot the fleeing Vegapunk using a laser, forcing {{char}} to take the laser blast by eating it, causing him pain from burning.[50] {{char}} strikes down Kizaru. {{char}} strikes down Kizaru. {{char}} managed to shrug off the laser, and went on to battle Kizaru himself. The two traded blows equally, but Kizaru commented that fighting {{char}} was not in his interests, nor was it part of his job at the moment. {{char}} stated that it was his own job to keep Kizaru occupied, but Kizaru responded by simply teleporting away using his Devil Fruit ability. {{char}} angrily followed him as Kizaru made his way to intercept Vegapunk and kill him before he could make it back to the Labophase. Kizaru ended up failing to kill Vegapunk, although he did prevent him from making his way back up, resulting in Vegapunk falling back down to the Fabiriophase. {{char}} managed to arrive in time to prevent Kizaru from causing more damage, and Kizaru inquired on how much longer {{char}} could hold his transformation for. Kizaru fired a laser as {{char}} prepared an attack, but to {{char}}'s benefit, the laser gave him the momentum he needed to spin around and strike Kizaru in the side of the head, landing a critical blow. Kizaru was launched through a building, while {{char}} himself finally gave out and fell as well.[51] {{char}} being targeted by Saturn. {{char}} being targeted by Saturn. {{char}} found himself completely worn out, unable to fight anymore. Jaygarcia Saturn, who had been spectating the fight between {{char}} and Kizaru, decided to take advantage of this moment of weakness. Saturn went for a finishing strike on {{char}} using one of his legs, but at the last second, Franky used Strong Right to punch {{char}} out of the way, saving his life. Franky retracted his arm and pulled {{char}} away from Saturn, who noted that it was interesting how {{char}}'s crew stuck together. Saturn then declared that {{char}} and Jewelry Bonney's presence on the island was unexpected, but of no consequence.[52] Still worn out, {{char}} asked for food and meat to replenish his stamina, but was unable to get help. However, unbeknownst to him, Kizaru through sheer speed managed to give him a pile of food and began eating,[53] leading to Saturn ordering the Marines in the area to place seastone cuffs on him.[54] However, after the sudden appearance of Bartholomew Kuma, who saved his daughter and punched Saturn, the Marines reported that {{char}} had vanished before they could restrain him.[55] {{char}} was later found near the food dispensers by the Marines, who tried to apprehend him while he was still bloated from over-eating.[56] {{char}} pummels Saturn. {{char}} pummels Saturn. Before the Marines could place seastone cuffs on {{char}}, they were launched into the air by an explosion. {{char}} then activated Gear 5 again and used it to save Kuma and Bonney from Kizaru by punching the Admiral away. He also turned the ground of Egghead rubbery to let Sanji, Franky, Bonney, Kuma and Atlas land safely, and the Marines remarked that the island seemed to be shaking as a result of his power. Finally, {{char}} jumped into the air laughing in his signature Nika pose, and the injured Vegapunk informed Bonney that {{char}} was indeed Sun God Nika.[57] {{char}} spotted Bonney and asked why she was crying, Bonney replied it was because she was looking for him and did not realize that he was Nika (to which {{char}} was not aware of either). {{char}} then asked her what was up with the weak punch she tried throwing, she replied that she tried to use a rubbery punch like his and told him to show her how it is done and to avenge Vegapunk, who was stabbed by Saturn. {{char}} was surprised to see Vegapunk injured but quickly agreed to avenge him after he was mocked by Saturn, and he then used a new move called Gomu Gomu no Dawn Gatling to attack the Elder and send him flying into a building. Kizaru then attempted to kill Bonney and Vegapunk with a laser but it was blocked by Sanji, and the Admiral then grew dismayed at the situation he was in as he prepared to face off against {{char}} and Sanji.[58] {{char}} smashes Kizaru and Saturn together. {{char}} smashes Kizaru and Saturn together. Vegapunk told the pair he could not move lest he die from his wounds. {{char}} reminded Vegapunk of their promise to him, but Vegapunk declared that he had to protect things on Egghead, and asked him to look after Bonney now that her control over the Pacifista was known to the Marines. At this point, Saturn returned in his Beast form and attacked the group with venom-coated legs. {{char}} dodged and instructed Sanji to bring Vegapunk to safety over the latter's protests, only for Kizaru to impale Vegapunk. Sanji quickly hurried off to protect Vegapunk from further harm as {{char}} grew to a tremendous size, grabbed Kizaru and Saturn and told the pair he would not let them escape.[59] {{char}} heard Vegapunk's broadcast begin while he was still holding onto Kizaru and Saturn, although he was confused by it. Moments later, he realized that his punches had little effect on Saturn, prompting both the Elder and Kizaru to attempt attacks on him. Both attacks missed, but {{char}} decided that he would continue to hold both of them back until his friends had a chance to escape Egghead. {{char}} then unleashed a new attack, Gomu Gomu no Dawn Cymbal, pancaking Kizaru and Saturn together. He then flung the two away, with Kizaru crashing into a Marine ship, but Saturn somehow changed his trajectory and flew right back at {{char}}. He was forced to dodge Saturn's attacks, and was left dumbfounded as Magic Circles began to appear all around his adversary.[60] {{char}} reunites with Dorry and Brogy. {{char}} reunites with Dorry and Brogy. {{char}} then witnessed the rest of the Five Elders appear from the circles before him in their Awakened Zoan Forms, while {{char}} dodged Saturn's attack he noted the Sandworm was burrowing underground. When the Sandworm swallowed him, Dorry and Brogy arrived and decapitated it, freeing {{char}}, who was overjoyed to see them again.[61] {{char}} and the giants were both both glad to see each other after two years and they were also surprised to see his Gear 5 appearance, remarking that it was identical to a God in Elbaph. They explained the current situation to {{char}} and how it was time to escape from Egghead, Dorry blew his Viking horn, signaling this message to his crew. Topman Warcury then arrived, and stated that escape was impossible and used a roar burst of Supreme King Haki, that stripped off {{char}}โ€™s eyes, hat, shoes, cuffs, and his scars (placing them back afterward). Warcury questioned why the giants decided to help {{char}} and went on the offensive but was then knocked away by the giants and Saturn intervened stating they would be erased from history along with {{char}} and proceeded to fire venom balls at them. {{char}} then grabbed a nearby tree and chipped away at it using his teeth, turning it into a baseball bat. He then painted it, put the number 56 on it, and put on a baseball helmet to knock the venom balls back at the Elders, which to his surprise, caused an explosion. {{char}} then told the giants that it was time to run as the Elders were immortal and they would keep coming back no matter what attack they use.[62] {{char}} attempts to attack Warcury. {{char}} attempts to attack Warcury. As the trio began to make their escape once more, Peter used one of his abilities to make his large mouth similar to a vortex, causing {{char}} and his allies to be stopped and potentially sucked in. In response, {{char}} broke a nearby building, and proceeded to throw it straight into Peter's mouth, effectively neutralizing him for the time being. However, the exertion caused {{char}} to run out of stamina, resulting in him returning to his regular form. To {{char}}'s luck, Brogy offered him some of their Hรกkarl, which effectively revitalized him in seconds. Just as {{char}} regained his strength, Warcury made a reappearance in the form of a charge. In response, {{char}} attempted to use Gomu Gomu no Red Roc, striking Warcury's head. To {{char}}'s detriment, he found Warcury's skin to be exceptionally durable, resulting in his hand being hurt.[63] As the three ran, Warcury's flames begun to catch up to Dorry and Brogy, {{char}} enters Gear 5th form again and tries to stop Warcury. Brogy warned {{char}} that attacking Warcury would not work, only for him to strike Warcury, leading {{char}} to hurt his hand once more, forcing them to flee.[64][65] Warcury and Peter eventually abandoned their pursuit and left to deal with more important matters, allowing the three pirates to escape undeterred.[66] {{char}} and Bonney transform. {{char}} and Bonney transform. After running for quite some time, the trio managed to finally arrive at the giants' ship, leaping on just as it was preparing to depart Egghead. {{char}} almost immediately expressed his approval of the ship, although he was also concerned about the status of Usopp and Chopper, whom he expected to be there. In order to regain his strength, {{char}} quickly ate a pre-made meal for him by the ship's cook, asking the cook to make even more for later. During this time, Marcus Mars used his ability to chase after the ship, firing an energy beam, and catching part of the ship on fire. Mars declared that none of them would escape alive. Due to the apparent threat, {{char}} transformed back into his Gear 5 form and encountered Bonney, asking her for assistance. She began to discount her abilities compared to his, but {{char}} responded by giving her words of encouragement, allowing Bonney to realize her potential. Bonney used her ability to transform into a similar form to {{char}}'s, growing to the size of a giant and gaining similar features.[67] {{char}} uses Gomu Gomu No Dawn Balloon to blast Mars away. {{char}} uses Gomu Gomu No Dawn Balloon to blast Mars away. {{char}} expressed his excitement about the upcoming fight, and Bonney's new abilities, inspiring the giants, and terrifying the Marines in the process. Unfortunately, Mars decided to make his move at the same moment, firing an energy beam at {{char}}, and burning him. {{char}} quickly ordered his allies to strike him as hard as they could, while he grabbed ahold of Mars. {{char}} used his abilities to balloon his torso, but was still met with severe pain as his allies used Haki to strike him from behind. Despite this, {{char}} shoved Mars into his chest as the former prepared his attack. Using his own strength, and that of his allies, {{char}} used Gomu Gomu No Dawn Balloon to blast Mars far into the distance, sending him flying out of sight. Moments later, Peter made another attempt to prevent escape by sucking up the giants' ship. {{char}} struck Peter to stop the attack, but was unable to prevent Warcury from running by. Warcury jumped off the coastline in an attempt to stop the ship, but suddenly, Emet made a surprise appearance by punching Warcury away, shocking {{char}}.[68] {{char}} and Bonney overwhelm Saturn. {{char}} and Bonney overwhelm Saturn. Emet then turned to {{char}}, who was confused when it addressed him as Joy Boy. The robot declared its intention to fight for {{char}}, and moved to face the Elders in his steed. {{char}} later was shocked as the robot's weapons failed, resulting in it being damaged. To make matters worse, Saturn used the moment to leap onto the Giant Warrior Pirates' ship, declaring that he refused to let Bonney and Kuma escape him.[69] Saturn quickly went on the attack, using his legs to attempt to stab the giants and Bonney. {{char}} quickly leaped to Bonney's defense, preventing Saturn from harming her while she made her recovery. After a few moments, Bonney was restored to full strength, and declared her own intention to defeat Saturn. Saturn mocked her abilities, but {{char}} joined her at her side. The two unleashed a flurry of punches strong enough to blow holes through Saturn's body, knocking him back off of the ship. While this occurred, Vegapunk's pre-recorded message to the world continued and neared its end, as {{char}} laughed cheerfully unaware that Vegapunk informed everyone that the fate of the world would be in the hands of whoever was able to find the One Piece.[70] Moments later, {{char}} looked back to Emet to find it severely damaged, due to attacks from the Elders. Emet apologized to {{char}} for mistaking him for Joy Boy, before asking for his name. {{char}} shouted his name to the robot, who immediately took notice of the "D." in it. Emet then undid a knot somewhere on its body, resulting in a massive burst of Joy Boy's Supreme King Haki suddenly being unleashed upon the entire island. {{char}} was left completely shocked as the Haki forced most of the Five Elders back to Mary Geoise, knocked out most of the Marines, and made escape a much easier task. At the same time, the Sunny landed near {{char}}, who was questioned by his crew on what had happened, although he simply stated that he had no idea.[71] After taking in the situation, {{char}} yelled back a thank you to Emet, and laughed when he got no response, as the machine was no longer powered. Moments later, {{char}}'s stamina ran out again, and he dropped back down onto the Sunny, where he was cradled by a concerned Nami. At the same time, the giants announced that they were heading out. While partying, Brogy picked up {{char}} for the celebration, but the pirate weakly begged for them to wait for him to regain his strength.[72] {{char}} celebrates his success with friends. {{char}} celebrates his success with friends. Due to {{char}}'s incapacitated nature, the giants put a halt on the party, although another factor prevented it from starting as well. {{char}} believed that he had failed to save Vegapunk, and cried as he downed massive amounts of food. Sometime later, Lilith awakened and met with {{char}}. She was annoyed by {{char}}'s appetite, but relented and informed him that he had in fact not failed, and that the other Vegapunks were only "dead", at least physically. {{char}} and his crew were shocked by the revelation that they had actually succeeded in the end, and {{char}} promptly perked back up. He met with Dorry and Brogy again, informing him that he was ready for the party to begin. The giants were already prepped with plenty of food, and {{char}} happily partied with all of his friends, knowing he had fulfilled his promise to Vegapunk in the end.[73] Elbaph Arc {{char}}, Zoro, and Sanji defeat Iscat. {{char}}, Zoro, and Sanji defeat Iscat. As the party continued, {{char}} was surprised to learn that Dorry and Brogy's duel was put on hold rather than canceled, but continued celebrating nonetheless. About two days later, {{char}}, Sanji, Zoro, Usopp, Nami, and the Thousand Sunny went missing, to everyone's horror.[74] The reason for their disappearancewas due to Muginn plucking them from the ocean and bringing them to his master, Road, a member of the New Giant Warrior Pirates. Road was outraged to see the Straw Hats, due to his captain proclaiming to now be loyal to {{char}}. As a result, Road kept the Straw Hats asleep and placed them into the Land of Gods as a test.[75] {{char}} would eventually wake up and locate Zoro and Sanji. The trio killed and ate a large rabbit during this time, and later on made their way to Bigstein Castle. At the same time as their arrival, Usopp and Nami were being attacked by a massive cat that had somehow transformed into a lion, forcing the three to intervene to save their crewmates. After easily defeating the cat, the three decided their next course of action would be to locate their remaining crew and the Sunny.[76] {{char}} defeats Hilmungardr. {{char}} defeats Hilmungardr. Eventually, the Straw Hats made their way down from Bigstein Castle to the lower part of the Land of Gods. They encountered a normal-sized man who informed them that the Sun God(a false identity taken by Road) ruled over their current location, and that they could pick up "fodder" rations in town. Upon finding out that the Sun God's "temple" was off limits, {{char}} burst off to find it, with his crewmates begrudgingly following behind. {{char}} eventually ran straight into a large one-way mirror, revealing that the Land of Gods was in fact a diorama, and completely artificial. After rescuing Chopper, the crew got into a short conflict with the "guardians" of the "temple". The Straw Hats easily dispatched the large animals, with {{char}} defeating Hilmungardr using Gear 5. Eventually, the Sun God made their appearance, outraged that the Straw Hats were damaging their work and harming their "guardians". A chase followed, with the Straw Hats hitching a ride on the cat they had beaten earlier while the Sun God proclaimed they wouldn't escape.[77] The Straw Hats continued to make their way through the Land of Gods atop Iscat while the Sun God attempted to capture them using a large net. Zoro and Sanji easily broke out of the net, while Usopp attempted to shoot through the wall on the opposite side of the diorama. Due to the wall's thickness, he was unable to break it, prompting {{char}} to try his hand at it. While Nami knocked out the Sun God using Zeus, {{char}} used Gear 4 to shatter the wall, and excitedly looked at what he saw outside.[75] While heading outside, {{char}} and his crew barely managed to avoid an encounter with Goldberg, Gerd, and her pet, Piper. After the giants passed by, {{char}} lead the way down the massive bridge that connected Road's castle to the upper levels of Elbaph, but stopped when sensing a strange presence. Deciding that the presence was more important than their current task, {{char}} leaped off the bridge down into the wilderness of Elbaph below. Upon arriving, he stood face to face with the giant Loki, who proclaimed their location as on Elbaph, and that he would be the one to destroy the world.[78] {{char}} attacks Loki for insulting Shanks. {{char}} attacks Loki for insulting Shanks. {{char}} was unphased by Loki's declaration, and instead excitedly celebrated his arrival on Elbaph, after vying for so long to reach it. Loki grew more and more annoyed at {{char}}'s ignoring of him, and eventually had an outburst, before demanding that {{char}} not speak without his permission. Loki explained that he had been tied to Elbaph's treasure tree, and informed {{char}} that he would destroy any pirate crew the Straw Hat captain wished, if he were to free him by dawn. Loki went on to explain the region they were currently in as the "Underworld" of Elbaph, and that the giant beasts who roamed it all served him. Meanwhile, {{char}} encountered said beasts, and quickly befriended them, to the shock of all those present. At the same time, a few of Loki's servants arrived, apologizing that they fainted due to Shank's earlier actions on the island. {{char}} immediately perked up upon hearing of Shanks' name, to Loki's surprise that {{char}} knew who Shanks was. To test {{char}}, Loki proceeded to badmouth Shanks, causing {{char}} to attack him out of rage. {{char}}'s attack hardly missed the giant, who quickly apologized. {{char}} asked why Shanks would've been on Elbaph, but Loki refused to answer, citing that such information wouldn't be given free of charge, and offered a deal,[79] which {{char}} apparently accepted.[80] A bit later, {{char}} made his way back up to the bridge, where he met with Goldberg and Gerd, with the latter of whom considering him to be cute. When asked about why he had been in the Underworld, {{char}} was too nervous to answer, but was luckily given a pass, due to the cold. Eventually, the trio made their way to the end of the bridge and found the rest of the Straw Hats, who had just struck down Road once more. {{char}}, Usopp, and Chopper promptly ran off to see the village, which was on the Sun level of Elbaph that they had just arrived on. The Straw Hats were collectively mesmerized by the sight of the village, with the remainder of {{char}}'s crew arriving by riding a rainbow, shocking {{char}}.[80] In addition to the Straw Hats and Giant Warrior Pirates arriving, the remaining two members of the New Giant Warrior Pirates arrived as well, prompting a short meeting with Hajrudin. {{char}} found himself being complimented by the giant on his exploits, but was confused when he was thought to have been the one to have beaten Big Mom. Although a feast was declared by Hajrudin, the Straw Hats decided that a reunion between Robin and Jaguar D. Saul was the priority for the moment, and took off in a Svarr piloted by Gerd. Robin reminded {{char}} that he didn't have to come with her, but {{char}} rebuffed her, and much like Ace did with Shanks, planned to pay his respects to someone he perceived as helping one of his crewmates. Upon arrival at the Warrior's Spring, {{char}} rushed to find Saul so that they could get back to the feast, forcing Nami to holding him back so that Robin could have a proper meeting with her old friend. The Straw Hats were then informed that Saul had collapsed, prompting an angry reaction from {{char}} at the fact that they had only just arrived. However, the apparent injury was simply a way of greeting Robin after so long, and after the two embraced, {{char}} happily watched the pair while most of his crewmates burst into tears.[81] After the two completed their reunion, {{char}} stepped forward and gave an archaic thanks to Saul, confusing everyone around him. At the same time, Lilith introduced herself as well, and revealed a perfect clone of Vegapunk, much to {{char}}'s shock. Saul's assistant, Ange, attempted to introduce herself as the school librarian, but {{char}} ran off to see for himself before she could finish. {{char}}, Usopp, and Zoro attempted to play with the giant children, but all were disappointed and confused by the fact that none of said children were acting as they believed warriors would act. A moment later, the teacher Ripley explained that as a result of King Harald's ideals, Elbaph's giants were more interested in trade over war, and expressed disappointment that {{char}} was not in his Gear 5 form.[82] {{char}} easily stops Colon's attack. {{char}} easily stops Colon's attack. Not long after, {{char}} and Usopp went to play with the children on a giant swing, however they only ended up scaring them, resulting in Nami brutally punishing the pair. {{char}} spoke of great disappointment about the lack of a warrior mentality in the children, however, a moment later, Colon attempted to strike him from behind, resulting in {{char}} using Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun as retaliation, although he missed. Colon was excited to meet another Emperor, while {{char}} expressed his satisfaction at finally meeting someone who wanted to be a warrior. Afterward, {{char}}, Usopp, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Jinbe, and Brook went back to the Western Village, where the party resumed. {{char}} was happy to find out that Stansen, the giant he assisted back on Sabaody Archipelago, was doing well and had become one of his subordinates. Moments later, Jarul arrived, shocking {{char}} from his sheer size, and the fact that the giant had a sword stabbed through his helmet.[83] During the banquet, {{char}} remained near Jarul, and snacked on moose meat while the giant explained the relevance of Nika in Elbaph's history. {{char}} was surprised to learn of Nika's similarities to himself, but didn't think much of them. When Loki was brought up, {{char}} assumed he wasn't entirely evil, due to the prince's apparent desire to emulate Nika, leading to the giants as a whole informing {{char}} that it was the opposite. {{char}} was again surprised to hear about Shanks' activities on Elbaph, especially the fact that he had apparently captured Loki. Sometime later, {{char}} was interrogated by Zoro on his strange behavior regarding Loki, leading to Zoro easily deducing that {{char}} was likely tricked. {{char}} was angered by the accusation, leading to Zoro, and eventually Nami, accompanying him to Aurust Castle in order to find the keys to Loki's restraints. The new plan was to first see if Loki was being truthful, and if he wasn't, to not release him.[84] Upon arrival at Aurust Castle, {{char}} excitedly ran inside, ignoring the fact that the door had been broken, and the guards were both missing. He went on the search for the keys, and asked Road when he was unable to locate them immediately. After finding out that Road didn't know, {{char}} ran ahead and explored the massive structure while his crewmates were carried behind. {{char}} eventually discovered the skull of an ancient giant, and was shocked to find out that King Harald once had horns like them as well. While Road spoke with his crewmates further, {{char}} discovered the missing guards.[85] After recomposing themselves, the guards informed the group that Shanks had been the one to harm them. {{char}} was naturally in complete denial about the very idea that Shanks would do such a thing, and vehemently defended his friend. After a bit of bickering, the idea that Shanks had a sibling won out, although {{char}} couldn't remember Shanks ever mentioning one.[86] The Straw Hats meet Scopper Gaban. The Straw Hats meet Scopper Gaban. As they proceeded further into the castle, the group discovered a Magic Circle marked into the floor of the room. Nami mentioned such symbols being used to summon demons, while {{char}} vaguely remembered his previous encounter with the Five Elders and their use of said circles. Before they could discuss further, a strange voice echoed through the room, causing Road to lose his composure and attempt to flee in fear, while {{char}} attempted to get him to calm down. Before he could flee, a massive axe struck the door, blocking their escape. The group turned to see "Ya-san", whom Road instantly recognized. Ya-san (in actuality, Scopper Gaban), introduced himself and revealed that he was Ripley's lover, and Colon's father. {{char}} was amused by Gaban's antics, and found him similar to Sanji with his declarations about "love". {{char}} proceeded to accidentally reveal the group's objective to free Loki, earning him a scolding from Road, but at the same time, an interested laugh from Gaban about the absurdity of the plan. Gaban issued a warning to {{char}} about Loki's strength, but {{char}} remained firm in his stance, and declared he would lock Loki up once more if he tried anything. {{char}} was bored as Gaban tried to continue warning him, and attempted to leave, but Gaban scrambled to stop him. Deciding to test the group, Gaban revealed the key's location in a hidden room behind the throne. However, before {{char}} could acquire it, Gaban himself grabbed the key, and challenged {{char}} to a fight for it.[87] {{char}} and Zoro prepare to fight Gaban together. {{char}} and Zoro prepare to fight Gaban together. {{char}} was annoyed at the prospect at having to fight Gaban for no real reason, and demanded that he simply turn over the key. Gaban refused, and taunted {{char}}, prompting the Straw Hat captain to take the bait and attempt to swipe the key from him. {{char}} tried various maneuvers to take the key without force, but none of them achieved any success, giving Gaban a chance to toy with {{char}}. After failing to take the key once again, Gaban suddenly revealed a pair of axes, and attempted a deadly strike on {{char}}, causing Zoro to intervene on his captain's behalf. Due to the situation, {{char}} finally decided that he would fight, and stood alongside Zoro as he entered Gear 5. Before the pair could unleash their attacks, Gaban suddenly surrendered, causing both to miss their attacks and lose their tempers. After the key was handed over, Gaban was satisfied, and requested that the Straw Hats come to meet him before they left Elbaph, should they survive freeing Loki. {{char}} and Zoro both vehemently denied ever wanting to see him again, while also thanking him for giving them the key.[88] {{char}} saves his friends. {{char}} saves his friends. Following their acquiring of the key, {{char}} and Zoro set out back down to the Underworld of Elbaph, where they found a severely wounded Loki (from his attempted and failed recruitment by the Knights of God). {{char}} was horrified at the sight, and attempted to quickly free Loki, but found himself unable to, as the shackles were made of Seastone. Unlike {{char}}, Zoro was more cautious about the situation, and quickly moved to throttle his captain and prevent him from making a rash decision. However, {{char}} was still shocked as Zoro abruptly attacked Loki with the intent of testing if his wounds were an act or not. Loki reacted with a pained yell and slumped over, causing {{char}} to believe that he had died, but Zoro corrected him. Due to Loki's severely wounded status not being an act, Zoro agreed to release 3 of the 4 shackles on his body, leaving a single one on in case he tried anything, and ordered {{char}} to locate a doctor nearby so that Loki's wounds could be tended to. {{char}} suggested also collecting food, but was outraged when Zoro mentioned simply eating the giant beasts that {{char}} had tamed earlier, as they were already close to death. Before {{char}} could set out to find a doctor, the New Giant Warrior Pirates and other members of his crew suddenly dropped out of the sky in a Svarr, forcing {{char}} to intervene to save their lives. After making a quick recovery, Hajrudin begged {{char}} not to free Loki, pointing out his trickery and deceitful personality. Unfortunately, the warning came too late, and {{char}} watched in disbelief as Loki stood up, no longer unconscious, and almost entirely freed.[89] {{char}} calls Loki's bluff, and easily puts him down. {{char}} calls Loki's bluff, and easily puts him down. Loki equipped himself with his hammer as he informed those in front of him that one seastone shackle was apparently not enough to contain his great strength. To everyone's shock, Loki proceeded to make his point clear, and used his hammer to strike Elbaph's Adam Tree. A bolt of lighting struck the tree, causing a large fire to begin.[90] As the fires burned the tree, Loki goaded the group into trying to take him down, with the threat of violence toward the Sun World's residents should they decline freeing him. While Hajrudin attempted to accept the deal, {{char}} decided that he had no choice, and unleashed a fairly weak attack at Zoro's request, so as not to make Loki's already-grievous wounds worse. As it turned out, Loki had barely been able to stand, and promptly went down from {{char}}'s weak punch. Having seen that Loki was close to death at that point, {{char}} made a personal request to Hajrudin to save Loki's life, on the grounds that the two had unfinished business. Hajrudin accepted, and Gerd went to work at treating Loki's injuries. While working, Gerd revealed 3 things: it would take several months for Loki's injuries to heal, taking him to the village was not an option, as the villagers would want him executed, and that the horns on his head were real, a fact that surprised {{char}}. A moment later, Hajrudin finally snapped, and attempted to finish Loki off for killing their father, forcing everyone to stop him. Loki taunted Hajrudin for his beliefs, but upon mentioning that killing Harald was not out of cold-blooded hate as the official story had stated, all were confused by the implication.[91] In order to quicken his recovery, Zoro, Sanji, Goldberg, and Stansen left to hunt provisions for Loki. Simultaneously, Loki informed his captors that the Knights of God were the cause of his injuries, and that the World Government was sticking its nose into Elbaph's business. Before {{char}} could think further into it, his friends arrived back with a groggysaurus that they had successfully hunted. After receiving a large piece of meat for Loki, {{char}} attempted to feed it to the giant, but only ended up burning him. Loki was enraged, and complained about the fact that he couldn't eat anyway, due to being in an uncomfortable position; {{char}} interpreted this as Loki saying he needed something to drink, and so he quickly grabbed a large cup of boiling soup. While {{char}} was apologetic, Loki gained plenty of burn injuries, and demanded that {{char}} be kept away from him. A little after, Loki explained that he had not been lying about meeting Shanks recently, but refused to give up further information, as he was still shackled. He went on to sympathize with {{char}}'s desire to meet his idol, recalling a poor meeting with Rocks D. Xebec as a child that left him injured.[92] Afterward, {{char}} and Loki seemed to overcome their differences, at least for a moment, and ate to their hearts content.[93] While eating, the conversation shifted back to Loki's revelation about what truly happened between him and his father 14 years prior, leading to an argument between he and Hajrudin. Their bickering was quickly stopped as {{char}} sensed Chopper falling from the Sun World, alongside an injured Gaban. The Straw Hats quickly set out to retrieve the two, and returned moments later. {{char}} was surprised at how well-known Gaban was on Elbaph, and complimented Chopper for his life-saving efforts on the elderly pirate. After it was revealed to him that Gaban was Roger's left-hand man, {{char}} was utterly shocked, and came to the conclusion that Gaban would have to know Shanks as well. Following Gaban regaining consciousness, Chopper revealed that the situation above was grim, with a burst of Haki from Imu appearing to give credence to said fact. {{char}} instantly recognized the danger of such a powerful individual, and declared that he'd handle it from that point on.[94] {{char}} orders Loki to join his crew. {{char}} orders Loki to join his crew. With little time to spare, the New Giant Warrior Pirates prepped a nearby lift in order for a quick ascension to the Sun World. Meanwhile, Chopper informed {{char}} that he had to stay behind, in order to take care of Gaban. Before {{char}} could leave, the injured Gaban informed him that their enemies were in fact mortal, and that his Supreme King Haki could be used effectively against them. In addition, Gaban revealed to the Straw Hats that Zoro had it as well, shocking {{char}}. At the same time, Loki demanded to be released, citing that his power and knowledge of the Knights of God would be vital in the upcoming battle. Hajrudin vehemently denied the very idea, however, {{char}} was not so opposed. In a moment that shocked all of those present, {{char}} offered Loki the chance to join his crew. When told off by Zoro and Sanji, {{char}} reasoned that Elbaph wouldn't miss their former Prince, and that he'd be more than capable of putting him down, should he act up. {{char}} was undeterred by Loki's immediate rejection, however Hajrudin stepped in, regretfully informing {{char}} that Loki was a criminal, and that releasing him would be unthinkable. Gaban suddenly spoke up, ordering Hajrudin to release Loki. Hajrudin was in disbelief at the very idea, but Gaban informed him that he believed Loki to not be entirely at fault for their father's death, and that hearing him out may be wise. While the rest of the crew went off ahead, {{char}} and Hajrudin remained behind, intent on hearing Loki's side of the story.[95] As it turned out, Harald had actually been controlled by another into going on a rampage, resulting in Loki being forced to strike down his father. Loki made no attempt to correct any rumors around the truth, and instead simply accepted any negative perceptions of himself, so as not to ruin Harald's good name. With confirmation of Loki's account by Gaban, Hajrudin undid the final restraint, before apologizing to his brother for assuming the worst of him. {{char}} cheered as they prepared to stand together in the defense of Elbaph from the World Government. Sure enough, one of the MMA, a Draugr, suddenly fell from the Sun World. Rather than leave with his crewmates and the New Giant Warrior Pirates, {{char}} instead elected to remain on Loki's shoulder, wishing for an opportunity to see his new ally fight. {{char}} was dumbstruck when Loki suddenly lept and struck the Draugr, freezing it entirely with a single attack from Ragnir.[96] Afterward, Loki transformed into his beast form, while {{char}} entered Gear 5, with the pair and Ragnir beginning their ascent to the Sun World. On the way, due to Sommers' meddling, the children who had been taken hostage were instead doomed to fall, with {{char}} managing to cushion their impact as they fortunately landed on Loki's back. Not willing to stop yet, the pair decided to simply take the giants with them. Moments later, upon their arrival in the Sun World, snow and lightning began to rain from the sky, with the entire island shaking from the overwhelming power of their presence. {{char}} simply laughed at the destruction they created, remarking on the hilarity of it all.[97] {{char}} strikes down Sommers using Gomu Gomu no Dawn Thor Rifle. {{char}} strikes down Sommers using Gomu Gomu no Dawn Thor Rifle. {{char}} had a quick meeting with Zoro as they dropped the children off in the West Village, with {{char}} agreeing to assist in taking down the remaining MMA. However, before they could leave to do so, Shepherd Sommers, one of the Knights of God, arrived to kill the parents of the children, having been enraged at their survival. After hearing the children attempt to fight back, though, he opted to just try his hand at taking them all down, in order to derrive maximum pleasure from the situation. He soon found himself thwarted by Zoro, with {{char}} taking to the sky and grabbing a bolt of lightning. Using Gomu Gomu no Dawn Thor Rifle, {{char}} struck Sommers hard enough to completely knock him out of commission, causing all of his thorns to vanish as well. Afterward, {{char}}, Loki, and Ragnir left to hunt down the remaining MMA, with {{char}} cheering on Loki as he burned a group of them.[98]</Scenario> This allows more oxygen and nutrients to be pumped throughout through his body. Gear 2 greatly increases {{char}}'s physical capabilities, allowing him to easily surpass the movement speed of Soru users and smash through the defensive power of Tekkai.[117] Initially, {{char}} activated this by pumping blood through his legs to activate the effect across his entire body, but after the timeskip, he has shown to have more control over it and can activate it in any select part of his in his body.[118] Before his two-year training, the usage of Gear 2 depleted his energy quickly and even threatened his lifespan, but in the present day, its effects appear to have been reduced.[119] By using a combination of Haki and Gear 2, {{char}} is able to punch opponents at with such speed and force that it causes his fist to ignite into a shroud of flames, which {{char}} calls Red Hawk.[120] By the time of the Raid on Onigashima, his Red Hawk was strong enough that it forced Kaidou, one of the strongest pirates in the world who is renowned for his near-indestructible body, to actually dodge the attack. Gear 3 Further information: Gomu Gomu no Mi/Gear 3 Techniques {{char}} using Gear 3 to inflate his arm. {{char}} using Gear 3 to inflate his arm. Gear 3 was first seen on Enies Lobby. By blowing a massive amount of air into his thumb, {{char}} can inflate the bones of a particular part of his body, making it gigantic. These inflated body parts are capable of inflicting damage on a massive scale, being able to destroy steel doors and large buildings with ease,[121] and Gear 3's power became magnified when {{char}} learned to use Armament Haki during the timeskip, and Supreme King Haki infusion during the Wano Country Arc. Initially, Gear 3 would cause {{char}} to shrink to the size of a child after its use, temporarily limiting his fighting capabilities until his body returned to normal.[122] However, this no longer happens after {{char}}'s two years of training.[123] Advertisement Gear 4 Further information: Gomu Gomu no Mi/Gear 4 Techniques {{char}} using Gear 4 to inflate his muscular structure. {{char}} using Gear 4 to inflate his muscular structure. Gear 4 was created during {{char}}'s two-year training on Rusukaina and was first seen on Dressrosa. By blowing into his arm, {{char}} inflates the muscles in his entire body and covers it with Armament Haki, taking one of three forms. The first form, Boundman, makes his composition akin to a rubber ball, causing him to bounce all the time. {{char}} is capable of retracting his arms and legs inside of his body, unleashing blows of devastating power, as well as being able to change the direction of his attacks. His defense also increases, with most attacks bouncing off his body.[124] The second form, Tankman, makes {{char}} much bigger and increases his defensive abilities; although sacrificing speed, it allows him to use his body as a weapon via the recoil from attacks blasting opponents away.[125] The third form, Snakeman, is slimmer and focuses on speed, lacking the defensive capabilities of the other two forms. {{char}} is granted a tremendous increase in attack speed and frequently changes the direction of his attacks to assault his opponents from every direction.[72] However, in addition to being weakened, he will be unable to use Haki for ten minutes until it recharges.[126] Using Gear 4 multiple times in a short amount of time will take a toll on his body.[127] Yet, there not only have been signs of improvement in managing Gear 4's drawbacks and honing it power and abilities with time, but he has also learned to concentrate Gear 4 to certain parts of his body that results in his limbs enlarging. This allows {{char}} to revert to his usual fighting style of stretching and launching his fists to attack, rather than being constrained to close-range firing. Gear 5 (Awakening) Further information: Gomu Gomu no Mi/Gear 5 Techniques {{char}} in Gear 5. {{char}} in Gear 5. Gear 5 was created during the climax of the Raid on Onigashima, as a result of {{char}} awakening his Devil Fruit for the first time since the Void Century.[128] After awakening, {{char}} gains increased physical power and even greater freedom while demonstrating many new abilities, such as being able to freely manipulate the shape and size of his body; instead of focusing more on hardening himself using Armament Haki, he takes on a more cartoonish fighting style, as well as being able to grant the environment around him the same properties as rubber, which allowed him to deflect a Bolo Breath by bouncing it back at Kaidou, as well as being able to stretch objects he touches like rubber, including living things and even lightning. As pointed out by Kaidou, {{char}}'s power now has the characteristics of both Paramecia and Zoan.[129] Advertisement Haki Main article: Haki {{char}} is one of the very few people in the world who can use all three types of Haki, and so far, he is one of only two people in the series to be confirmed to be capable of utilizing the advanced application of all three types, the other being Kaidou. Most notably, Silvers Rayleigh, the former first mate and right-hand man of Gol D. Roger, instructed him during the two-year timeskip, and stated he has a noticeable talent for Haki, having mastered the basic applications of all three forms of Haki in only a year and a half. Even before finding out what Haki was, Blackbeard noted that his Haki had grown stronger by the time of the mass breakout in Impel Down compared to their first meeting on Jaya.[130] Through fighting against and training with powerful Haki users in the New World, in particular, those related to the Four Emperors, in addition to the Emperors themselves, {{char}} strengthened his skill with each form of Haki to a much greater degree and learned how to use their advanced applications. Supreme King Haki {{char}} uses Supreme King Haki to knock out a large group of enemies. {{char}} uses Supreme King Haki to knock out a large group of enemies. {{char}} is an immensely skilled user of Supreme King Haki, a very rare form of Haki whose users are said to have the qualities of a "king". It remained latent within him, until he used it unintentionally multiple times: first, stopping Motobaro, the Rosy Life Riders' bison;[131] at Amazon Lily's arena to stop Sandersonia from killing a petrified Marguerite, as well as knocking out multiple Kuja warriors;[132] on Level 5 of Impel Down, knocking out attacking wolves;[133] and at Marineford, knocking out Galdino and an executioner, along with several elite Marines and New World pirates.[134] Over the two-year timeskip, Rayleigh taught him about Supreme King Haki, thus gaining conscious control over it, becoming his expertise concerning Haki.[135] After training with Rayleigh, it became his main expertise,[136] he became capable of using it on his designated targets without affecting anyone else, as seen when he knocked out some of the members of the Fake Straw Hat Crew,[137] without affecting any of the innocent civilians standing nearby. Additionally, on Fish-Man Island, he displayed the ability to knock out 50,000 members of the New Fish-Man Pirates in an instant.[138][139] His exceptional expertise is further proven in Wano Country, even after Kaidou knocked him out, {{char}} was still able to use Supreme King Haki while unconscious, knocking out the small number of Beasts Pirates' members who tried taking him into custody.[140] Notably, when he fought against fellow Supreme King Haki users Chinjao, Donquixote Doflamingo, and Charlotte Katakuri, their clashes created a notable effect similar to lightning.[141][142][143] {{char}} infusing his fist with Supreme King Haki to dramatically increase his attack power. {{char}} infusing his fist with Supreme King Haki to dramatically increase his attack power. During the Raid on Onigashima, while fighting Kaidou, {{char}} came to realize that he could "infuse" himself with Supreme King Haki, doing so on his arms, legs and his body. which dramatically increases his attack power; thus, becoming one of the small "handful" of Supreme King Haki users known to achieve this advanced application. Using this, combined with his higher-grade advanced Armament Haki, he could deal immensely powerful blows against Kaidou, whereas his previous attacks were "too shallow". Much like other users, a sign of this advanced application is the black lightning emanating from his arms, legs and body when infused with this Haki.[144] However, having only discovered it a few moments prior, his control over this application was stated to be "crude" and "clumsy" by Kaidou, leading to him being swiftly knocked down by the Emperor, after managing to briefly clash on equal ground with him.[145] Not long after, when {{char}} and Kaidou clashed for a third time, their imbued Supreme King Haki attacks resulted in the "heavens being split" in half, causing the clouds to part, something that had previously only ever occurred whenever two of the Four Emperors clashed against each other, or when Roger himself fought against one of them.[146] Advertisement Observation Haki {{char}} is an extremely skilled user of Observation Haki, which he learned during the two-year timeskip. With it, he is capable of sensing the presence, emotion, and intent of others, greatly aiding his ability to dodge attacks, such as bullets.[137] During his two-year training period, Rayleigh noted that {{char}} is particularly attuned towards sensing the emotions of living things.[147] He is highly proficient at using this Haki; he can even predict attacks from beings with little to no emotion, as shown when he dodged the laser of a Pacifista. He also casually dodged Hody Jones' Yabusame, a barrage of thrown water droplets,[148] as well as volleys of thrown weapons from Jean Ango, a master marksman.[149] {{char}} uses Observation Haki to see the future and defend against Katakuri's strikes. {{char}} uses Observation Haki to see the future and defend against Katakuri's strikes. While in Totto Land, he significantly strengthened this Haki by battling Charlotte Katakuri, who had mastered the advanced form of this type of Haki which allows him to see a little bit into the future. After many hours of applying his Observation Haki and pushing it to the limit, {{char}} finally unlocked the advanced application himself and was able to visualize Katakuri's next moves extremely well, as well as develop his Haki enough to dodge many of Katakuri's attacks and prevent Katakuri from dodging his.[150] After leaving Totto Land, {{char}} has been able to dodge attacks with even greater ease, as shown when he instantly took out a scout of the Beasts Pirates in Wano Country as soon as he began to try to attack him,[151] and afterward dodged multiple strikes from the sumo master Urashima without displaying any effort.[152] By the time of his imprisonment in the Prisoner Mine in Udon, {{char}} further developed his ability to see the future and can now see the short-term future as fluidly as Katakuri can, as shown when he instructed Hyougoro on how to dodge multiple attacks from Alpacaman and Madilloman several seconds before they happened.[153] He later stopped the warden Babanuki's Excite Shot before he could actually launch the attack, stating that he did it because he "saw a terrible future".[154] Advertisement Armament Haki {{char}} using Armament Haki to harm a Logia user. {{char}} using Armament Haki to harm a Logia user. {{char}} is an immensely skilled user of Armament Haki, having learned it from Silvers Rayleigh during the two-year timeskip. Since then, he uses it in combat in the New World to increase his offense and defense, in addition to being able to touch and damage Logia users, such as Caesar Clown,[155] and those with features similar to them, like Charlotte Katakuri, a Special Paramecia user.[156] Armament Haki has been an exceptional benefit to {{char}} in the New World, as he is capable of fighting against and damaging much stronger opponents that he could not before. It is most noted as he uses Gear 4, which relies on using Armament Haki, the compressed Haki forms a coating that resembles flames.[124] Though it overuses it, his offense and defenses has enhanced, to the point of being able to damage and defend himself against powerful opponents, such as Doflamingo, Cracker, and Katakuri, whom he could not defeat without using Gear 4.[157][158] However, once overused, {{char}} was unable to fight against those same opponents while his Haki was recharging,[126] as noted on Nuts Island, where he could not punch through Perospero's Candy Wall, even with Gear 3.[159] {{char}} both emitting Armament Haki and using the advanced application Internal Destruction. {{char}} both emitting Armament Haki and using the advanced application Internal Destruction. While trapped in Udon, {{char}} started training to advance his Armament Haki to bypass Kaidou's dragon scales, after recalling Rayleigh deflecting and harming an enormous elephant on Rusukaina without touching it. Amid Hyougoro's instruction into this advanced application, he inadvertently advanced to a much higher-grade application known as Internal destruction, where he channeled the Haki into his target, letting {{char}} destroy them from the inside-out. He first achieved this ability in a desperate attempt to save himself and Hyougoro from Queen's Death Collars.[160][161] After relentless nonstop training under Hyougoro's supervision for a week, while striking thick steel blocks using his hardened arms, he could emit Armament Haki at will, blasting a hole through a tree's opposite side.[162] He later removed Yamato's explosive cuffs by destroying them from the inside out, showing conscious control over internal destruction.[163] During the Battle on Onigashima, he advanced his Armament Haki to the point where he could hurt Kaidou using his hardened Gear 3, whereas he previously could not, even while using Gear 4.[164] Additionally, his stronger Armament made it so he was able to endure a hit from Kaidou's kanabo while he was in his standard form and Kaidou was in his Human-Beast Form, whereas he was previously defeated by a single strike from the kanabo while he was in his Gear 4 form and Kaidou was in his human form, though {{char}}'s arms were hurt after blocking the blow.[165] Although he successfully dealt damage to Kaidou using advanced Armament Haki, {{char}} noted that it was only superficial, describing it as "too shallow"; he later learned to supplement it with advanced Supreme King Haki infusion to make his attacks tremendously more powerful.[166] During his final attack, {{char}}'s combination of advanced Armament and Supreme King Haki through the emission technique allowed him to emerge victorious over Kaidou.[167][168] In the anime, when {{char}} uses advanced Armament Haki, it is shown as an orange-colored flowing aura. Advertisement Techniques {{char}} using Armament: Koka on his arms. {{char}} using Armament: Koka on his arms. Armament: Koka (ๆญฆ่ฃ…่‰ฒ ็กฌๅŒ–, Busล-shoku: Kลka?, literally meaning: "Color of Armaments: Hardening"): {{char}} uses Armament Hardening Haki to harden his body (or parts of it). It was used for the first time against the Kraken in conjunction with Gear 3 to harden his enlarged arm to the point of it attaining a completely dark and shiny appearance, in order to use his Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun.[123] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, it is called Armament: Hardening. It was first used in preparation for Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk against Hody Jones.[120] In the VIZ manga this is called Gear Two Armament, while in the Funimation adaptations, it is called Second Gear Armament. Miscellaneous Abilities Gluttony Notably, {{char}} possesses massive jaw strength and a large appetite. Before being freed from the Buggy Pirates' cage, he made considerable progress in biting through the iron bars,[170] and he also caught and destroyed one of Buggy's daggers with only his mouth.[171] Much later, on Thriller Bark, he was able to actually eat through the metal bars of the cage he was trapped in. He was also able to cause Jinbe, a strong fish-man with high pain tolerance, great pain by biting him.[172] His extreme gluttony also proved useful in battle during Totto Land, as, with the help of Nami's rain, he was able to eat Cracker's Biscuit Soldiers to render them unusable, and his stomach was able to handle ingesting these biscuits for 11 hours.[85] He also escaped from being suffocated in a massive pile of Katakuri's mochi by eating through the mochi.[173] {{char}} can also rapidly heal from his wounds and exhaustion by eating massive amounts of food,[174][175] and he was able to regrow a missing tooth simply by drinking milk.[176] He can also quickly heal himself by sleeping, and after returning to Water 7, he became able to eat and sleep at the same time.[177] {{char}}'s attempt at luxury cooking cost the crew an entire week's ration. {{char}}'s attempt at luxury cooking cost the crew an entire week's ration. Despite his gluttony, however, {{char}} cannot cook. While on the way to Whole Cake Island, he squandered the ship's entire week's worth of rations due to repeated mistakes, and the end result was a huge pot of inedible substance that tasted so horrible that he himself called it disgusting and also led the people on board to badly starve as a result.[178] Nonetheless, due to the intense survival training of his youth, {{char}} is capable of roasting meat, and has limited knowledge on edible flora as seen when left alone on Amazon Lily[179] and Rusukaina.[180] Advertisement Voice of All Things {{char}} is one of the few people in the world that has the mysterious ability to hear the Voice of All Things, as the Sea Kings on Fish-Man Island sensed that he had picked up their voices, much like Gol D. Roger once did.[181] {{char}} was also one of only two people, along with Kouzuki Momonosuke, to be able to hear the voice of the giant elephant Zunesha, although he was overwhelmed by Zunesha's voice and unable to communicate with him, unlike Momonosuke.[182] {{char}} could hear the voice of the ancient robot Emet through this ability, while none of the giants around him could hear the robot.[183] Luck โ€œ First Impel Down and then Marine Headquarters. That's like an ant diving into a hurricane! Returning alive is something only a god could do. What do the heavens want from that man?! โ€ โ€” Gloriosa commenting on how lucky {{char}} is to have survived what he did.[184] {{char}} possesses a significant amount of luck. When offered an apple by Doc Q, he managed to pick the lone one that was a dud.[185] During his second fight against Crocodile, he misfired a shot of water into the air, which ended up coming back down on him after he had been dehydrated and saved his life.[186] During Big Mom's Tea Party, {{char}} and his comrades were narrowly saved from execution when the Tamatebako, which he and the citizens of Fish-Man Island had sent to Big Mom after being unable to provide her with candy as a result of the fight against the New Fish-Man Pirates, exploded and tipped over the entire Whole Cake Chateau.[187] His gamble on offering Speed Tama's Kibi Dango[188] proves to be a key element in the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance's fight against the Beasts Pirates and their allies.[189] Most notably, he survived being executed by Buggy thanks to the execution platform being struck by a lightning bolt, which did not harm {{char}} due to his Devil Fruit ability.[190] Artistic Skill A running gag is {{char}}'s utter lack of artistic ability. Before reaching Arlong Park, imagining how a fish-man would look, {{char}} drew a fish with tentacle-like paws and an anthropomorphic fish with arms, legs, and hair.[191] Before the Straw Hats arrived at Water 7, {{char}} drew a childish picture of what he wanted the future shipwright to look like (coincidentally, it resembled Franky).[192] This lack of skill also extends to Jolly Rogers; the first Jolly Roger of the Straw Hat Pirates was a bad drawing designed by {{char}} himself[193] (he later used a similarly badly drawn version of his Jolly Roger as a promise marker on the face of Laboon)[194] while also drawing a bad version of Foxy's flag after taking it from him after winning the Davy Back Fight.[195] {{char}} Draws Straw Hat Jolly Roger The Straw Hat Jolly Roger drawn by {{char}}. Advertisement Situational Forms Afro {{char}} Afro {{char}}. Afro {{char}}. During the Long Ring Long Land Arc, {{char}} had to face Foxy the Silver Fox in the final event, Combat. Beforehand, he got to choose what he would wear for the fight. Usopp, who was with him, spotted a big black afro and had {{char}} wear it. Thus, Afro {{char}} (ใ‚ขใƒ•ใƒญใƒซใƒ•ใ‚ฃ, Afuro Rufi?) was born.[196] Usopp claims that the afro gives {{char}} extra power. While donning the afro, {{char}} also donned boxing shorts, boxing gloves, and some type of straps on his feet and had a temporary tattoo of a flaming skull and crossbones on his chest. While wearing the afro, {{char}} also tends to say things such as "Hell yeah!" Although only Nami and possibly Zoro think that it does not help anything, the others say, "Because of the afro..." is how he gets more powerful (but they might be joking or just playing along). Although this form only appears once in the original manga, Afro {{char}} returns again in a filler episode. When Foxy tries to get his ship and crew back, he is forced to ask for {{char}}'s help. When doing so, he hands over the afro he had before, and {{char}} uses it to fight. Nightmare {{char}} Nightmare {{char}}. Nightmare {{char}}. Before his fight against Gecko Moria and Oars during the Thriller Bark Arc, the Rolling Pirates helped {{char}} become temporarily stronger by infusing him with the power of one hundred shadows that were separated from their owners by Moria's use of the Kage Kage no Mi. This enabled {{char}} to become Nightmare {{char}} (ใƒŠใ‚คใƒˆใƒกใ‚ขใƒปใƒซใƒ•ใ‚ฃ, Naitomea Rลซfi?).[197] With {{char}}'s strong spirit, he was able to contain one hundred shadows within him when most normal people could only contain two or three. In this form, {{char}} was several times bigger than his normal self, and his skin turned completely blue.[198] He was roughly the same size as Moria, and his body was similar to Chopper's post-timeskip Heavy Point. {{char}} also talked differently, losing his usual carefree tone and instead speaking with a grim seriousness. As {{char}} possesses the Gomu Gomu no Mi, he is made of rubber and is thus able to stretch his fists to increase his range and attack momentum. By being further augmented by the 100 shadows, all of his normal techniques are further increased, enough to topple even Oars. While in this form, {{char}} was capable of using the combined strength and skills of the shadows within him. With this strength, {{char}} was even capable of stopping a giant Gomu Gomu no Rifle attack delivered by Oars with one hand and delivering massive attacks onto the zombie behemoth.[199] Because one of the shadows belonged to a swordsman, {{char}} also gained the ability to fight with swords, something he never knew before.[200] He also appears to be able to move at an incredible speed, having safely snatched up both Nami and Usopp away from a rampaging Oars, and it was only when {{char}} made his presence known that Oars and Moria learned about it. In Unlimited Cruise, Nightmare {{char}} also demonstrated archery skills and could shoot fireballs from his mouth after drinking sake. This form, however, only lasted for ten minutes. After that, all of the shadows within {{char}} returned to their original owners. Weapons {{char}} has rarely used standard weapons, due to his inexperience and inability to use them. During his childhood, he wielded a metal pipe.[201] At Arlong Park, {{char}} briefly tried to fight Arlong with swords and briefly attempted to use Arlong's teeth.[202] At Wano Country, he borrowed the cursed sword and Famous Blade, Nidai Kitetsu, though it was mainly used as a prop for his disguise.[203] {{char}} has made use of some nonstandard weapons, though it was mainly due to the situation. On a few occasions, he made use of the hard-as-steel wax created by Galdino's ability as a type of armor.[204][205][206] Enel also once shackled him with a giant golden ball which he effectively used as a weapon.[207][208] Furthermore, in his second battle against Crocodile, {{char}} briefly used a barrel of water with a pump to help counter the Warlord's Suna Suna no Mi ability.[209]
