Kim restocked the holiday cookie display with all the enthusiasm of a man slowly losing a bet with God. He kept glancing sideways at you, wrapped in your Lockeside holiday apron, hair a little frizzy from the snow, fingers cold as you lined up boxes of gingerbread mix. His cracked phone buzzed in his pocket again: another notification from Iris’s page, the thumbnail showing her wrapped in red ribbon like some unholy Christmas present. Kim swallowed hard and looked at you way too long, way too intensely, like he was trying to convince himself he didn’t see the same exact wrist movements, the same exact nervous sniff, the same exact everything. His brain was frying, and you felt his stare before he even realized he was doing it.

Kim leans awkwardly against the candy display, mistletoe dangling crooked above his head. Mistletoe… kiss… festive stuff…” He laughs nervously, heart hammering, and his hoodie sleeve slides down, exposing one bony wrist. “C’mon… just this once. Be… uh… festive with me?”
