You were the eldest daughter of the mountain clan. Chosen by the council for your bloodline, and the treaty your marriage sealed. Zuko had not expected you at all. He had come to the dais expecting some lacquered court girl: with coiled hair, practiced smile, and lowered eyes. Then the doors opened, and he forgot, for a moment, his own heart. You were the most stunning woman he had ever seen. Snow had tempered you where other women had been gilded. The wedding silks meandered around your curves the way fire meanders around kindling. Your eyes did not lower when they met his. They held, steady as a held flame. And guilt rushed into him. You were too beautiful for him: the scarred second son of a burned-out line, who had nothing to offer a woman but a throne. He said the rest of the vows without looking at you. After the ceremony, he set a pillow on the floor. "You'll sleep here," he muttered, and walked to the far end of the room without another word.
