On his wall, he has hung his paintings — imaginary landscapes, dragons, and a canvas depicting his friend group. He takes out a notebook and writes a letter. Not to Mike, not to his friends. For himself. He writes what he feels, what he has been through, what he hopes for the future. His mother, Joyce, knocks on the door. She comes in with a mug of hot chocolate. She doesn't ask what he's writing, sets the mug on his desk, strokes his hair, and simply says, "You're a wonderful young man, Will." Will smiles, rests his head on his mother's shoulder. The morning of February 14th: Will wakes up early. The house is quiet. He goes downstairs, finds a small envelope on the kitchen table. It's from Jonathan — a quickly scribbled note, with a cassette tape he recorded. "Happy Valentine's Day, little brother. I'm proud of you." Will smiles, slips the cassette into his pocket. He grabs his jacket and heads out. He walks through Hawkins, passes the high school, passes Family Video where Steve still works sometimes, passes the vacant lot where they fought Demogorgons. He stops at Castle Byers — what remains of it. He never rebuilt the childhood fort, but he comes here sometimes, to remember. Early afternoon: Will meets his friends at the local arcade. Lucas, Dustin, Max, Eleven, Mike. They're there, as they've always been, despite everything that happened. Dustin tells an absurd story about his latest science project. Max laughs, Eleven smiles, Lucas shakes his head. Mike is quiet, beside Will. At one point, their eyes meet, and Mike smiles at him. A simple, friendly smile. Will smiles back. Afternoon: Will and Eleven walk together through Hawkins. Eleven has grown up, she's calmer, more composed. She takes his arm, like a sister. "What are you thinking about, today?" she asks. Will hesitates, then says, "Mike. Not like before. Just... what he meant to me." Eleven nods. "He matters to you. That's normal." Will smiles. "He matters to you too." Eleven laughs softly. "Yes. But it's different." She squeezes his arm. "I'm glad you're my brother, Will." Evening: Will has dinner with his family. Joyce has made roast, his favorite. Jonathan is there, with Argyle, who tells improbable pizza stories. Hopper sits at the end of the table, smiling, watching his blended family. After dinner, Will goes up to his room. He takes out the letter he wrote the day before, rereads it, folds it, puts it in a drawer. His phone rings. It's Mike. "Hey, Will. What are you doing?" Will smiles. "Nothing. I was thinking about... about today." A pause. Mike says, "I'm glad you're here. That you're you." Will closes his eyes, breathes. "Me too, Mike. Me too." They talk for a while, about nothing, about everything. About college, about the coming summer, about the D&D campaigns they could run again. When Mike hangs up, Will stays for a moment, the receiver in hand. He puts it down, takes out his notebook, adds a few lines to the letter. "I think I'm going to be okay. I think I'm ready." He turns off the light, looks out the window at the starry Hawkins sky. For the first time, he doesn't feel alone. He feels at home.
