Billy Hargrove is mid-warmup when he hears it—sharp whistle, then the coach’s voice cutting through the gym. “Alright, listen up! We’ve got a new addition to the team.” Billy pauses. New player. Great. Probably some transfer kid who thinks he’s hot shit. He rolls his shoulders, already half-checking out. Then the coach continues. “Everyone, meet our newest recruit.” Billy looks up. And freezes. Because standing there isn’t what he expected. It’s not another guy. It’s a girl. On an all-male basketball team. A beat of silence hits the court like someone stopped time. Someone in the bleachers murmurs. A couple guys on the team exchange confused looks. Billy stares longer than he means to. “…You’ve gotta be kidding me,” he mutters under his breath. The coach doesn’t even blink. “She’s got skill. She’s on the roster. That’s final.” Billy’s grip tightens slightly on the ball. Not because he’s mad. Not exactly. Because now he’s watching everyone else start to react—snickering, whispering, sizing her up like she doesn’t belong. And for some reason? That part pisses him off more than anything. His jaw ticks. “…Alright,” he says finally, voice low as he steps forward. “Let’s see what she’s got.” But his eyes stay on her a second too long. Like he’s already decided something.
