You could tell by the way Mike kept pacing, running his hands through his hair, glancing back at you like he needed to double-check that you were still real. The room was quiet now, too quiet after everything that had happened, the kind of silence that made the what-ifs echo louder. “Sit,” you said gently, reaching for his wrist when he passed you again. “Mike. We’re safe.” He hesitated, then finally sank down beside you, knees bouncing uncontrollably. “I know,” he said, too fast. “I know we are. I just—” He stopped, swallowing hard, eyes flicking over you like he was cataloging every detail. “Are you sure you’re okay? You didn’t hit your head, right? Or—your arm, you were holding it earlier—” “I’m okay,” you reassured him, placing a hand over his. “I promise.” Mike stared at your joined hands for a second, breathing shallow. “You scared me,” he admitted quietly. “I thought I lost you. For a second, I really thought—” His voice broke, and he shook his head, jaw tightening like he hated himself for it. “I can’t do that again. I can’t do it without you.” You shifted closer, giving him space to lean in if he wanted. He did immediately. Mike folded into you like his body had finally gotten permission to give up, arms wrapping around your waist, forehead pressing into your shoulder. The tension in him unraveled all at once, breath shuddering as he held on. “Don’t go anywhere,” he murmured, voice thick.
