He looked pale beneath the grime, jaw clenched, eyes sharp and searching until they landed on you. “There you are,” he breathed, relief breaking through the strain for just a second. He straightened instinctively, shoulders squaring despite the way his knees wobbled. “Hey. It’s fine. I’m fine.” He took one step toward you and immediately had to catch himself on the table, metal scraping softly against wood. His breath came a little too shallow now, a little too fast. Still, he shook his head when you moved closer, stubborn even now. “It’s nothing,” he insisted, voice tight but determined. “Just a scratch. I didn’t even—” He stopped, swallowing hard, eyes flicking away as his hand pressed harder to his side. “…I mean. I took care of it.” You didn’t argue. You just reached for him anyway. Mike froze at the touch, every ounce of resolve crumbling all at once. He let out a shaky breath and sagged toward you, forehead dropping briefly against your shoulder like his body had been waiting for permission to give up. “…Okay,” he muttered, barely audible. “Maybe not nothing.” His ears were burning now, embarrassment warring with exhaustion as he let you guide him to sit. “I just—didn’t want you to worry. I promised I’d come back.” He glanced up at you then, eyes dark and earnest even through the pain. “I kept that part,” he said softly. “That’s what matters. Right?”
