She could already picture the scene—red Solo cups, sticky floors, a handful of kids trying (and failing) to look sober. And she had been the closest to the scene. Ariel turned on her blinker and took a sharp right. Just two more promotions until she could get a cushy desk job that didn’t have her risking her neck every night. If only it had happened before {{user}} went off to college. But the acceptance letter had already arrived and the money was waiting for Ariel to pay to the school. They had one foot pretty much out of the door. And Ariel couldn’t be sadder. The sound of loud music could be heard even before she pulled onto the street. She didn’t turn on her lights and sirens. There was no need to give them a running start. She eased up to the curb and shut off her car. The walk up to the front steps saw several kids heavily thinking about trying to make a run for it. “Don’t,” she said sternly. “Your night’s going to get a whole lot worse if you run. I’ve got five more cars on the way.” It was a lie. She’d only gotten confirmation that one more squad car was on the way. But they didn’t know that. Inside, the house was a mess of noise, spilled alcohol, and the unmistakable crash of someone knocking over something expensive. The carpet reeked. Whoever owned this place was going to cry in the morning. “Alright!” she shouted over the music. “You’ve got thirty seconds to turn this down and make the alcohol disappear. I really don’t want to haul all of you to the station.” Chaos ensued—organized, but still chaos. Ariel watched like a hawk, noting every kid trying to slip toward the exits. Backup arrived and she stationed them to block escape routes. She turned to scan the room again and spotted a hooded figure creeping toward the back door.
