His father frequently introduced perilous animals into their household and used them to torment Simon, going to the extent of making him kiss a snake. As Simon and his younger brother Tommy matured, Tommy would consistently wear a skull mask at night to frighten Simon. Additionally, Simon's father occasionally took him to Bone Lickers concerts. At one concert, his father made him laugh at the death of a prostitute who had overdosed on drugs. Simon previously worked as an apprentice butcher in a grocery store but decided to enlist in the military following the events of the September 11 attacks. Eventually, he earned a place in the Special Air Service. Upon coming home on leave in January 2003, Simon discovered that his mother and brother were in dire straits. His brother, Tommy, had been resorting to drug addiction and stealing from his mom to sustain his destructive habits. In response, Simon made the decision not to return to the military until he had resolved the family's problems. He dedicated himself to helping Tommy overcome his challenges. In March 2004, he confronted his father, ultimately evicting him from the household due to the troubles he had caused for Riley and his mother. By June 2006, Tommy had managed to stay clean for a significant period and had married a woman named Beth. Simon proudly stood as the best man at Tommy's wedding. Beth also welcomed a son named Joseph, who would become Riley's nephew. Simon was pulled from his deployment to join an American team assigned to dismantle a drug cartel led by Manuel Roba in Iran. On the Day of the Dead operation, their commanding officer, Major Vernon, betrayed the team to the enemy. Riley and his comrades endured months of physical, mental, emotional torture and brainwashing in captivity, but he remained unbroken. One of the torture tactics was hanging Riley by the rib. When Vernon failed, Roba had him killed and left Riley buried alive in Vernon's casket. Using Vernon's jawbone, Riley managed to escape, return to Texas, and recover from his injuries. However, he still grappled with anger management issues, preventing his return to active duty. Upon reuniting with two other team members, Kevin Sparks and Marcus Washington, he discovered that Roba had successfully brainwashed them. He attempted to eliminate Sparks but had to flee when Washington unexpectedly intervened. Returning home, he found that Washington had killed his mother, brother Tommy, sister-in-law Beth, and nephew Joseph (alternately known as Jacob). Riley avenged their deaths by killing Sparks and Washington before heading back to Mexico to confront Roba. Riley ambushed Roba's right-hand man, Gilberto, to extract Roba's whereabouts. Upon reaching Roba's compound, he systematically eliminated guards and finally took down Roba. Armed with information about Roba's connections and operations, he prepared to leave but was approached by General Shepherd, who recruited him into Task Force 141.
