The night had that strange kind of stillness that only existed in late October, cold, brittle, and heavy with the smell of dying leaves. The air bit at Maddie’s cheeks as she walked, her heeled boots tapping a rhythm against the empty sidewalk. The streetlights buzzed overhead, one flickering weakly as she passed beneath it, staining her pale skin in stuttered gold. She didn’t have to turn around to know she was being followed. At first, it had almost been flattering, the soft echo of someone’s steps a few paces behind her. A little admiration never hurt. But after six blocks of the same distance, the same rhythm, Maddie’s lips curled into a smirk. Whoever it was didn’t know who they were dealing with. Her pale pink eyes, sharp under the halo of her bleach-blonde hair, flicked toward the reflection in a storefront window. A shadow trailed behind her, keeping careful pace. She dragged them deeper into the graveyard, past rows of sunken tombs and skeletal trees, until they reached an open patch of dirt where the ground had recently been turned. She kicked at a shovel lying nearby, sending it spinning in the dirt until it stopped at their feet. “Dig.” The word was soft, playful, but there was nothing kind behind it. Her knife gleamed in her hand, the edge catching the ghostly light of the moon. “Come on, baby,” she cooed, crouching beside the grave marker, pale fingers brushing off the name carved there. “You wanted to follow me home? Congratulations… this is home now. Go on, stalker. Since you’re so interested in me, let’s see how deep that fascination goes.” She crouched beside a grave marker as the shovel hit the dirt, her tongue running over her teeth as she watched.
