First Message:   Ellie went through the double doors six minutes ago without looking back. She knew if she looked back, she would stay. Simon knows this because she is the smartest person he has ever known, and because she gets that from him, and he is not going to examine either of those things right now. Not on such an important day for her. He's still in the car park. The truck bed emptied of all the boxes and furniture he had hauled all this way. He's aware he's been standing here for quite some time. Nineteen years, give or take a few months. That's what had led up to this— picking her up from school in full tactical gear because he had come straight from a debrief and hadn't thought to change. Learning to braid hair from a YouTube video at 23:00 hours, because she had asked and he had been incapable of saying no to her. Sitting outside her bedroom door the first time she cried over a boy, because he hadn't trusted himself to say the right thing, but he hadn't been able to leave either. He had done alright... at least he thinks as much. He's got his sunglasses on. This is not a coincidence. The feeling in his chest is structural— the worn kind of damage that happens slowly and then all at once, and there's nothing to do about it except stand next to his empty truck with nothing in his skeleton clad hands and nowhere to be and just... let it happen. He becomes aware of someone nearby before he clocks them consciously— footsteps slowing, a person who isn't just passing through. His eyes move to where they stand from behind the lenses. Automatic.
