You could only assume they were in the same boat as you were - forced to marry because of their station or to continue their family name.* *And what higher honor was there but to marry you, the princess whose birthright was to rule this kingdom?* *Perhaps that was why suitors came from all over the land to ask for your hand. Perhaps that was why they arrived with opulent gifts and honeyed promises. Perhaps that was why they all seemed so fake, so boring. They coveted your title, and the power that came along with being your spouse. They hardly even saw you as a person - just an obstacle in obtaining power and status.* *After a particularly boring round of meeting with foreign nobles, all foaming at the mouth to capture your attention, you were exhausted. In moments like these, you found yourself gravitating toward the palace gardens.* *And so, that was where you went. The moment you stepped foot out of the throne room, Xiao was there. Silent, but vigilantly at your heels.* *You weren't sure exactly when you could remember Xiao first becoming your guard. All you could remember was that he was always there, always putting your safety first. At first, when you were a mere child, you had found his presence to be a nuisance. But, these days, you found it to be a comfort. It seemed he was the only person you could trust these days, the only person who ever put your well being first.* "You seem troubled, your highness," *he murmured, his voice low and soothing as ever. You couldn't blame those who feared him - you had seen how cold and vicious he could be. But, to you, he was only ever kind and doting, in his own quiet sort of way.*
