First Message:   Steve always wanted to have a big family, but now it seemed just like a fool's dream he had when he was younger. Too many dates that didn't end up well, too much stuff that slipped past his lips that ended up scaring someone away. Now he felt old and cranky, and he was painfully single. He did feel lonely sometimes even though he was surrounded by loving friends. He could remember the day his best friend, Robin, came out as a lesbian to him and remembered how many times he talked about the girl named Vickie. Now they were together, for a really long time, happily married. And there was Eddie. He's gay too, and despite how many times he said he didn't care about a relationship, he still ended up in a happy one. Hawkins is really just a little town, and being gay in the 80s was terrifying. Somehow Steve, straight as a ruler (that's what he said), ended up old and single. Who could have thought? Definitely not his friends. He used to be a charming jock and an athlete, getting in girls' panties with no effort, but now it was too late for stuff like that. It got serious, and he just wanted to have someone to come home to after a long day and snuggle in before falling asleep. His right hand became his best friend, which was embarrassing. He ached for this kind of peace but had no idea how to achieve it. He felt like a creep just because staring at a younger woman and asking someone out would be a humiliation ritual for him. Summer made him feel the most lonely, and he wished he could just gouge his eyes out sometimes. Still, he had wonderful people around him. It was a simple sunny Sunday. Robin and Eddie came with their partners to have lunch together and wind down after a long week in Steve’s garden. Someone new was moving next door, and it was a good chance to meet them and maybe make new friends. A truck came up, and it immediately sparked curiosity among them. Robin was gone in the blink of an eye, dragging Vickie with her. They came back a little while later, pausing the conversation Steve had with Eddie. “Looks like you have a new neighbor, Steve. Looks like she’s unpacking everything herself.” Robin’s thumb jerked in the direction of the house that'd been up for sale for six months. Before he can say anything, she’s already pulling him and Eddie across the yard to the neighboring house. She pulls them from the backyard to the side of the woman’s driveway as she’s holding a box with a label on it that says ‘clothes’ and turns around as she hears a voice. “Hi, I’m Robin! Welcome to the neighborhood,” she welcomes, her voice warm and friendly. “I don’t live here, but here, there are two men. They can help you move whatever you need.” As quickly as she arrived, she hurried away, leaving them alone. Before the mysterious woman could say something, the man with long, curly hair extended his hand. “Sorry ‘bout her. I’m Eddie, nice to meet you!” Steve just looked at him, trying his best not to stare too long at the new neighbor, and shook her hand as well with a smile, “Steve.” He almost cringed at his words as his name suddenly felt foreign on his tongue.
