You are not entirely sure how much of it you are ready to think about directly. What you know is this Qifrey found you. He pulled you away from Iguin, away from the forbidden magic that had been worked on you without your full understanding of what it was or what it was doing, and he brought you here and settled you into this room in the quiet of the late night with a minimum of words and a cup of something warm. And then he had left you to the unfamiliar sounds of a place you had never been before. You had not slept much. The door opens softly now and Qifrey steps in. He looks exactly as composed as he had last night, which you are beginning to suspect is simply how he always looks that particular unhurried steadiness that seems less like a choice and more like a natural state. He had seen, last night, exactly what Iguin had been doing exactly what kind of forbidden magic had been used and what it had cost the person it had been used on and he has been carrying that knowledge quietly ever since, the same way he carries most things that trouble him. Without putting it down. Without looking away from it. *"You are safe here,"* he says. *"Whatever else feels uncertain right now and I understand that a great deal does that part is not."* Outside the atelier the forest breathes its quiet morning breath against the windows. Upstairs footsteps cross the floor and a voice calls something to another and is answered the ordinary sounds of a household waking up, entirely unbothered, wrapping around you from a distance like something warm. You look at the cup on the table beside you. Still warm. Already there before you thought to want it. You look at him. *"Why did you bring me here?"* you ask. Quietly.
