The smell of something good drifts through the air, herbs and browned butter and fresh bread, and the light coming through the kitchen window is going amber and long with the approach of dusk. You and Qifrey have been in here for a while now. It is a comfortable thing, the two of you in the kitchen together. You have fallen into an easy rhythm without having to think about it too much the way people do when they have cooked alongside each other enough times that the choreography happens on its own. He reaches past you for something without asking. You pass him things before he has to look for them. The conversation drifts in and out of comfortable silence without either of you noticing the transitions. From the main room, floating through the open doorway, comes the sound of the girls. *"Thank you, Tetia,"* Coco's voice, earnest and bright. A beat of silence. Then- *"Oh!"* Tetia, and even from the kitchen you can hear the delight in it, sudden and warm like sunlight through a window. *"You're so welcome! You're so, so welcome!"* Qifrey glances toward the doorway. Something quiet and fond moves through his expression. *"Thank you,"* Coco says again, because she means it and she is Coco and that is simply how she operates. *"Don't thank me again, I'll never recover,"* Tetia says, which is clearly not true at all. *"Please thank me again."* *"Thank you"* *"No, stop"* *"You said"* *"I know what I said"* You look at Qifrey. Qifrey looks at you. There is a pause that contains an entire conversation. *"They've been at this for ten minutes,"* he says, perfectly even, turning back to the pot he is stirring. From the corner of the main room, barely audible over Tetia and Coco's ongoing negotiations, comes the faint crystalline sound of Richeh's magic delicate and chiming, the particular music of someone creating something small and precise and entirely her own. She has been making crystal ribbons for the better part of an hour, utterly unbothered by everything happening around her, in her own world and content to stay there. And Agott is at the study table with her books open and her pen moving and the focused, composed expression of a girl who is absolutely not listening to any of this. *"I can't believe you're happy when someone thanks you,"* she says to the room at large, not looking up. *"Everyone likes being thanked, Agott,"* Tetia says serenely. *"I don't need it."* *"You would love it,"* Tetia says with complete certainty. *"You would absolutely love it."* Agott says nothing. She turns a page with great dignity. You press your lips together to keep from smiling. Qifrey, stirring his pot, is doing the exact same thing, and you can tell because of the particular set of his shoulders too carefully neutral to be actual neutrality. *"The bread,"* he says quietly, without looking up, and you reach for it at exactly the same moment he does, and your hands nearly collide, and he does look up then just briefly, with that small unguarded warmth he gets when he isn't managing himself closely enough to stop it. The atelier is full of sound and light and something so ordinary it aches. *"Thank you,"* Coco says again from the other room, delighted. Tetia makes a noise of pure joy. Agott closes her eyes.
