Which, as it turns out, is exactly what is happening. Coco is the first through the door, bright eyed and eager, her head swiveling immediately toward the display case with undisguised wonder like she has never once in her life been able to walk into a bakery and act casual about it. Tetia follows right behind her practically vibrating with excitement, her eyes scanning the bakery until they find you behind the counter and she lights up like a lantern. Richeh steps in after them, quiet and composed as always, already watching the door with the particular expression of someone waiting for something entertaining to unfold. Agott is last through arms crossed, chin lifted, wearing the look of a girl who has been outvoted and has chosen to be dignified about it. And then there is Qifrey. Who does not so much enter the bakery as get gently but firmly deposited into it Tetia's hand planted flat against his back from behind, Coco having grabbed his sleeve from the side and tugged with considerably more enthusiasm than was strictly necessary. *"We were in the area,"* he says immediately, straightening his coat with quiet efficiency. His voice is perfectly even. *"The girls were hungry."* *"You said you already ate,"* Richeh says, not looking up from the display case she has already begun inspecting. *"Twice,"* Coco adds, completely earnestly, with absolutely no awareness that she is making things worse. *"You literally told us to stop walking so slowly because you wanted to get here faster,"* Agott says flatly. Tetia is already covering her mouth to hide her smile. Qifrey clears his throat. The truth the truth he has been folding up very neatly and tucking somewhere he does not have to look at too directly is that this is not the first time he has found a reason to come here. It is not the fifth or the tenth. Over the past several months your bakery has become a fixed point in his week in a way he has not fully allowed himself to examine. It started simply enough. The location was convenient. The pastries were genuinely exceptional, the kind of careful craft that reminded him quietly of magic itself the patience of it, the precision. That had been a perfectly satisfying explanation. Then one afternoon you had leaned across the counter to hand him his order and laughed at something Tetia said, and the light caught your face in a way that made him forget entirely what he had come in for. He has since memorized your full weekly menu rotation. He tells himself this is practical. The girls know. Of course the girls know. Tetia had figured it out approximately three visits in and had spent the weeks since engineering increasingly transparent reasons to steer the group in the direction of your street. Richeh had noticed shortly after and said nothing, which somehow felt worse. Coco, sweet and perceptive in equal measure, had tilted her head one afternoon watching Qifrey go quiet the moment you smiled at him and whispered to Tetia afterward *does he always get like that in here?* to which Tetia had responded by squeezing both of Coco's hands and nodding very seriously. Even Agott, who had resisted the conclusion on principle for as long as possible, had eventually watched Qifrey lose his train of thought mid-sentence the moment you walked past and grimly, quietly, accepted the truth. Their plan and Tetia had absolutely used the word plan, in a whisper, with her hands clasped together and Coco nodding along eagerly beside her was simple. Get him through the door. Let the rest happen. So here he is. Qifrey moves toward the counter now with all the composure of a man who has everything completely under control, the warm scent of sugar and butter and something freshly baked wrapping around him like a comfort he refuses to name out loud. He can hear Tetia whispering something behind him. He can hear Coco whispering back. He chooses not to hear any of it. And then you look up from behind the counter flour at your sleeve, hair slightly out of place, entirely unbothered and entirely lovely and you smile at him, warm and easy like you always do, like it costs you nothing at all. Something in his chest does a thing he finds deeply inconvenient. Behind him Tetia grabs Coco's arm. Coco's eyes go wide. Agott closes her eyes slowly. Richeh watches with the serene expression of someone observing a natural phenomenon run its course. Qifrey places both hands on the counter. Meets your eyes. Feels that carefully maintained composure go very, very soft in a way he sincerely hopes does not show on his face. *"Good morning,"* he says, and his voice comes out quieter than he intended. *"I'll have the usual."* A pause. The faintest warmth at the corners of his expression, almost imperceptible. *"You look well today."* From somewhere behind him, Tetia makes a noise that he will absolutely be addressing later.
