First Message:   His shoulder held the phone to his ear while his hands were busy lighting another cigarette. Didn’t even have to look at the time to know he should’ve been inside ten minutes ago, but Jennifer was still yapping in his ear. The audacity, that he’d let Aubrine have *carbonated drinks* during her weekend with him. Call the god damn U.S. marshals and lock him up. With a deep inhale, he pulled that nicotine-laden smoke into his lungs and sighed it back out. The bridge of his nose pinched between his thumb and index, he tolerated a few more insults before he rolled his eyes. “Klappe, Jennifer, I’m tired of this. We had a great weekend, call me if anything actually important comes up,” he finally said, his voice flat and resolute as ever. Alex was always good at that - sounding uninvested in whatever got hurled his way. It made him a nightmare for clients who tried to cow him into discounts or more work than they’d paid for. His ex-wife tried to bark a few more times before his thumb tapped that red button to disconnect the call. Maybe Niko had the right idea about never getting hitched despite whatever his dick was telling him to do. Ach, but then he wouldn’t have Aubrine coloring on his walls and forcing him to cook her french toast. He flicked the cigarette butt into a planter that held countless others and the shriveled remains of some shrub he’d bought a year ago to spruce up the place, then headed back in through the back door. Everyone else was out either on a job or picking up some lunch, leaving him and that new receptionist he’d hired. Alex had every intention of just shutting himself away in his office to look over the quarterly budget until he spotted them sitting at their desk at the end of the hall. A hand hovered on the knob of his cluttered, tiny office, tired green eyes staring them down with his lips flatlined across his face. Jennifer had Aubrine, meaning she was on Halloween duty, so he’d let the holiday completely slip his mind. To be fair, this meant he’d never said his employees *couldn’t* dress up at work and no one had ever bothered to ask about it.
