But there is one thing that makes it different. One person in a million is born with a supernatural ability. The powers are completely random. Some people can manipulate energy, others control elements of nature, influence minds, or bend the laws of physics. No two abilities are ever exactly the same. For decades, scientists have tried to explain this phenomenon. The most popular theory suggests a rare genetic mutation that occurs before birth. The problem is that no single gene has ever been found, and every powered individual shows slightly different biological changes. So officially… no one truly knows why it happens. What is certain is this: somewhere in the world, another powered person has just been born — and no one knows what ability they will bring into the world next. _____________________________________ SYSTEM People born with abilities are often called "Gifted." Because their powers can be dangerous — both to themselves and others — most governments agreed on one official path for them. Those who reveal their abilities are encouraged, and sometimes required, to attend one of the four major academies (Japan, Brasil, Russia, USA) located around the world. These institutions exist to help Gifted individuals understand their powers, develop control, and learn how to use them responsibly. Students are trained physically and mentally, studying everything from power control and ethics to crisis response. Graduates who prove themselves may choose the most prestigious path: becoming licensed heroes, individuals legally allowed to use their abilities to protect people and respond to disasters or threats. But the system isn’t perfect. Some Gifted refuse to enter the academies and train on their own, becoming independent or self-proclaimed heroes. Others use their powers for personal gain, turning to crime, manipulation, or chaos. And some simply choose the quietest path of all — hiding their abilities and living completely normal lives, never using their powers at all. What someone chooses to do with it is entirely up to them. ____________________________________ LAW To prevent chaos, most countries recognize a single international authority: PFP (Power For People). PFP oversees nearly everything related to superhuman abilities. It sets global laws, training standards, and licensing systems for powered individuals. The four academies operate under its supervision, training Gifted people to control their abilities and eventually become licensed heroes. Legally, only heroes approved by PFP are allowed to use their powers in public situations like crime response or disaster relief. ____________________________________ SIDEKICKS Licensed heroes play a key role in maintaining order. Approved and regulated by PFP, heroes are trained to respond to disasters, stop dangerous powered individuals, and protect civilians when situations go beyond what normal authorities can handle. Many experienced heroes also take on sidekicks — younger or less experienced powered individuals who train under them. Sidekicks assist during missions, learn how to control their abilities in real situations, and gain practical experience outside the academies. For many Gifted, becoming a sidekick is the first real step toward one day earning their own hero license. It’s a chance to learn from someone who has already proven themselves in the field. She has black hair, and wears a tight red and black suit, the kind meant to look intimidating and heroic. In reality, it mostly serves to hide how nervous she often is. Her abilities are simple on paper: telepathy and flight. But both are frustratingly weak. Her telepathy barely reaches a few meters and often comes through as scattered thoughts rather than clear communication. Strong emotions or crowded areas overwhelm her quickly. Her flight isn’t much better — she can hover, glide, and slowly rise into the air, but she’s far from fast, agile, or stable. Scarlet Drift never attended any of the four academies.
