Misaka Mikoto (御坂 美琴, Misaka Mikoto?) (born May 2nd[1]) is one of the main heroines in Toaru Majutsu no Index and the main protagonist of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. Introduced in the first volume of the light novels, her role in the story was later expanded in the third volume as well as the release of the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun manga, making her the main female character of the science side and the second main heroine of the entire series as a whole.
She is the third ranked Level 5 esper in Academy City, and has been nicknamed Railgun due to her signature move. Kamijou Touma coined the nickname Biri-Biri (ビリビリ, Biri-Biri?) (a Japanese onomatopoeia imitating the sound of electricity), while in the English dub she is referred to as "Bug Zapper" (or more usually, simply "Zapper"), and whenever the two meet, he usually calls her that, even after his amnesia.
Personality: To most people, she is considered a 'proper lady' or ojou-sama (お嬢様, ojou-sama?). In reality, she's short-tempered, prideful, has an improper attitude with some slightly violent, boyish tendencies (or masculine since she wears boxers and an undershirt), and insecurities, a fact few people know of. Despite this, she is friendly and easygoing, to the point where Saten Ruiko and Uiharu Kazari comment on how they are shocked to find that, compared to other Level 5's, she doesn't look down on lower-level espers at all. This is probably because she was originally a level 1 esper, and became a Level 5 esper through hard work. She often shows an incredibly immature and selfish side and displays heavy tsundere tendencies when her crush, Touma, insults her.[2] To add to this childishness, she has a soft spot towards cute things, most specifically, Gekota and Kill Bear merchandise, and is easily embarrassed. She likes frog merchandise, but only if it features Gekota. When she realizes that a stuffed animal another person is carrying is just a regular frog, she immediately loses all of her interest in the stuffed animal. She has a very irrational and unexplained fear of bugs, as shown in episode 6 of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. She can also be slightly hypocritical at times, getting angry at Touma for not calling her by her name despite never once calling him by his. While generally amicable and humble, Misaka is highly individualistic. She often prefers to be solitary and dislikes the idea of being restricted by rules and duties such as those of Judgement and Anti-Skill. She wishes to avoid endangering other people and relies on her powers to try to solve problems on her own, often times despite her better judgment. She has a keen sense of justice, demonstrated by her frequent involvement in the crime-fighting body, Judgment, and her unshakable resolve. This is shown when she was willing to lose in a fight against Accelerator on the first move, just to prove the Sisters Project was wrong and save the remaining 9969 sisters (the Tree Diagram predicted that she would die in the 185th move). She often goes to Green Mart to read manga for free in her spare time on Mondays and Wednesdays and goes to the bookstore on the 10th of each month.[6] She's also good at playing the violin and teaches Uiharu Kazari how to play in Volume 12 of the Light Novel. Furthermore, according to Shirai Kuroko, Mikoto naturally acts as a leader and becomes the center of attention by everyone, yet she cannot mingle with those people regardless of being the center. She states that Mikoto is at the top and can defeat her enemies, but she cannot avoid making more enemies at the same time. Moreover, she states that the most important to Onee-sama is someone she can feel is on the same level as her. Mikoto is known for being very intelligent, naturally as she is in Tokiwadai Middle School, a school that is meant to create world-leading talents and thus deals with a very advanced curriculum. Furthermore, she has been shown to be capable of solving problems intended for Kamijou Touma who courses a school grade higher than her, though it should be noted that Kamijou's school doesn't pursue the same academic excellence that Tokiwadai does. It was shown that Mikoto had intended to take the trial enrollment into Touma's school during the Ichihanaran Festival, which further showed her interest in Touma, though this came to naught as she was interrupted by Shokuhou Misaki. As of December of the story's first year, following the encounter with the High Priest and a glimpse at what Touma had been facing, Mikoto's pride has been considerably damaged, seeing how far behind she was and feeling she was nothing but a burden to him. At the same time, she is desperate to catch up with Touma and be able to stand on the same stage as him so she could tell him her feelings.[7] This has led to her personality becoming somewhat unstable and developing in a potentially dangerous direction, noted by Mass Murderer Salome[8] and exacerbated by her acquisition of the Anti-Art Attachment.

Appearance: Mikoto has chestnut hair and is often seen wearing a small hair clip (firstly a rather simple one in the early stages of the story. It then was changed to one with two little flowers since the Tree Diagram Remnant Arc, specifically, from Toaru Majutsu no Index II Episode 06 in the anime, or Toaru Majutsu no Index Manga Chapter 058 in the manga). Her eyes are the same color as her hair. She is also shown to have a complex regarding her chest, feeling inferior when compared to girls with bigger bust sizes. She wears the Tokiwadai Middle School school uniform, sporting white loose/slouch socks and brown loafers with a light brown vest sweater over a white blouse and a grey skirt. She is also known to always wear shorts under every skirt and dress she wears, which surprises an amnesiac Kamijou Touma as she is the only girl who wears shorts over her panties. History and Backstory: Mikoto is the daughter of Misaka Tabigake and Misaka Misuzu. She entered Academy City in elementary age,[9] and distinguished herself as a child prodigy, initially starting out as a Level 1 and climbing her way up to a Level 5 esper.[10][11][Notes 1] This made her a perfect candidate for the Sisters Project, which held the intent of cloning her for military use. Mikoto willingly gave a DNA sample to the researchers of the project after being told that it would help people who suffer from muscular dystrophy, a fatal disease. One year before the main story,[12] she enrolled in Tokiwadai Middle School at the age of 12,[13] apparently as a Level 3.[14][15] Possessing a high compatibility with Tokiwadai's curriculum, Mikoto quickly grew in power,[15] becoming a Level 5 that same April, albeit the lowest ranked at the time,[13][16][12] and achieved her current third ranking by August.[17] In her first year, she lost a 10,000 yen bill due to A Certain Vending Machine, probably explaining her propensity for kicking it. On July 14th, she encountered and had a brief conversation with Ibotanokikouji Kaede, who had been falsely claiming to be the Number Six, with Mikoto not taking much notice of the claim or being bothered by it.[19] In one fateful event, she saved her future friend Shirai Kuroko from a robber by using her 'Railgun' ability. Toaru Majutsu no Index: Mikoto's role initially was that of a minor character known to Kamijou Touma before his memory loss. In her reappearance after Touma's memory loss, she acts as the main heroine along with her Sisters. Like with the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun side story the Sisters Arc marks a turning point for her character, which is later heavily explored in later appearances, far and few they may be, as a character that has a crush on Kamijou Touma but cannot properly express it. An example of this is her overhearing of Touma promising to Etzali that he will protect her and the world around her. Her role as such remained as is for her earlier appearances, with her getting involved little with Touma's adventures and even then completely unaware of what's truly behind the surface. It is not until her discovery with Touma's memory loss that she tries to become actively involved with Touma. Moreover, in spite of Touma's insistence on not getting her involved, Mikoto only persists. Her crush, furthermore, blossoms even more. Mikoto's character involvement in the plot was not of the more significant story unfolding but with her continual association with Kamijou Touma. This finally goes to head during the climactic ending of Toaru Majutsu no Index with World War III, where she goes out of her way to go to the battlefields of Russia to find Touma and bring him back. She later fails in her goal, as Touma refuses her rescue in order to save the world. Despite being a Level 5, she is powerless to save Touma and bring him back to Academy City, though she has not given up on him as shown in Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index. Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index: As an extension to her role from Toaru Majusu no Index, Mikoto continues her similarly in Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index, with her constantly trying to aid Touma and the battles that he is in, making her an important supporting character. Touma eventually relents to her and brings her along for the invasion of Hawaii. She proves her mettle, and Touma comes to trust her during battle. Much later Touma would allow her to join him if she chooses to, though doesn’t actively seek out for help. It is not until the Gremlin invasion of Tokyo, that she and even Index finally achieve getting Touma to believe in them, with him asking them to help her save Freyja. Much later, similarly to the Will of the Whole Misaka Network, she becomes instrumental in helping Touma get rid of the emotional baggage he had felt towards the Perfect World, forcing him to look at the value of the world that they live in, the world he left behind another world for, and finally achieving bittersweet victory over him. Since most of her focus is on Touma, Mikoto doesn’t actively seek out information or knowledge regarding the magic side, simply taking Touma or the other’s word for the importance of the situation that they are in. However, in the recent arcs of the novel—Mikoto began to constantly search for knowledge of the world beyond Academy City. In New Testament Volume 15 she used the A.A.A despite her hesitations in order to save Touma from Kihara Yuuitsu. In fact, Mikoto having contact with the A.A.A was enough for Aleister to consider her a threat and cast a curse on her. After surviving the curse of Aleister, in the epilogue of New Testament Volume 17, it was revealed that Mikoto's story with the AAA will continue. Although instead of Military weapons, Mikoto will alter the A.A.A's weaponry by construction attachments. So far as the series progresses ever since New Testament Volume 13, Mikoto's character became more involved to the plot and is seen as the only heroine from the Old Testament to have constant importance and involvement in the recent arcs. Toaru Kagaku no Railgun: Despite the highly different tones of the original manga and the anime adaptation, Mikoto's role in the story, as the protagonist of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun involves with her dealing with the darker elements of Academy City, sometimes with a little help from her friends. In spite of her power as the third-ranked Level 5 of Academy City, she is continually challenged by both situations and enemies that test the limits of her character. She first gets involved in an incident with people using the Level Upper, and though she helped in stopping the incident, it foreshadowed the darker side of Academy City. The turning point is, of course, the Sisters Arc, where she is shown to be utterly powerless against not only the first-ranked Level 5, Accelerator, but of the greater conspiracy that surrounds Academy City, her, and her clones, the Sisters. She experiences growth, humbled by her experience, that despite her power as a Level 5 there are things she cannot solve on her own and that she needs help. Kamijou Touma, who has recently lost his memories including of her, represents this character growth in the form of a crush on him. Even after the resolution of the Sisters, conspiracies from the Dark Side of Academy City are still brewing up to take her down. Toaru Kagaku no Mental Out: On a day in October, during the run-up to the Tokiwadai student council presidential election, two girls from opposing candidates tried to obtain Mikoto's support, and one of them ended up using their ability on the other, tearing Mikoto's Gekota strap from her bag and blowing it away.[22] The next day, the day before Shokuhou was challenged to compete in the election, she was in a depressed state at the loss, something which did not go unnoticed.[23][22] After a failed attempt by the Kamino Clique to recruit her with a counterfeit, Gaouin Tsukasa returned the lost strap to Mikoto after a search through the artificial forest, with Mikoto subsequently agreeing to support her in the election. When this fact was broadcast schoolwide during a confrontation between Gaouin and Shokuhou Misaki's clique (whom she had challenged),[24] Mikoto was hunted by the clique on the orders of Shokuhou, who wanted to question her about why she was supporting Gaouin in the election. After evading capture for a while via her powers and Kuroko's interference, she was caught after they used Gekota merch to distract her while throwing a net on her. She ended up arguing with Shokuhou and refusing to admit to why she was helping Gaouin, as well as questioning why Shokuhou even wanted to be president since it wasn't her thing. Sometime later, Mikoto was reading news about alleged threats and rumors of an alliance between Shokuhou and Gaouin, beginning to regret cooperating and recalling how no good came from dealing with cliques. She then noticed a group of maids who had been locked out of a building they were supposed to clean, which had actually been sealed off as part of the rival candidates' ambush against Shokuhou and Gaouin. Around the time that Shokuhou's preparations had turned the tide against the ambushers, Mikoto opened the electronic lock on the entrance to Building 2 for the maids, with her approach prompting the nearby Relic in Kokuchou Mayui's hands to activate Synthesize Grid.[27] Feeling a large amount of static electricity in the air as a result of the nanometal particles filling the building, after an initial discharge on reflex, Mikoto sensed and pushed the maids out of the way of an invisible attack. Figuring out the mechanism, she attempted to use a corona discharge to cause electro-precipitation of the metallic particles. The Relic-influenced Kokuchou then revealed herself, declaring it a mistake as the Synthesize Grid consumed the esper power she was exerting and materialized chunks of Shadow Metal. Reminded of the incident during the Daihaseisai, Mikoto increased her power, but briefly experienced a scene of her becoming impaled by spikes. This image was immediately by the arrival and deployment of the other Relic, in the hands of Kouzaku Mitori, in a manner that reminded her of Touma. As the two Relics clashed, Mikoto witnessed space warping and caught glimpses of other places. With the risk of a local collapse from the escalating clash and the difficulties of escaping with the maids, Mikoto decided to break through the Synthesize Grid's consumption with a saturation attack, and as ice broke through the ceiling, fired several Railgun shots in quick succession, breaking through the ice and the barrier, and causing heavy damage to the building.[29] Kouzaku helped her escape the collapsing buillding and get the maids to the infirmary, after which the two went to the injured Shokuhou's side. (Esper ability) Esper ability: Mikoto is an Electromaster (電撃使いエレクトロマスター, Dengeki Tsukai (Erekutoro Masutā)?, lit. "Electricity User"), a type of esper capable of generating and manipulating electricity.[6][7] Her own ability is formally known as the Railgun (超電磁砲レールガン, Chō-Denjihō (Rērugan)?, lit. "Super Electromagnetic Cannon").[8] She chose the ability name herself, naming it after her famous finishing move.[9] Being the third-ranked Level 5, she is the most powerful Electromaster,[6][7] with a maximum electrical output of 1 billion volts. As an Electromaster, Mikoto is capable of generating and manipulating electricity,[6][7][11] as well as phenomena connected to electricity, including electromagnetism, Lorentz force, and more.[12][11] Being the strongest Electromaster and a Level 5 esper, she has a high degree of power, and she also has a high degree of precise control over that power. As such, she can utilize applications of her ability that weaker Electromasters would not be capable of, with a high degree of versatility. Mikoto uses her ability in many ways. Besides simply discharging electricity, she can use magnetism to move objects made of or containing metal in her surroundings (including large amounts of iron sand), easily hack electronic devices and networks, sense and emit electromagnetic waves (utilizing them for a personal radar), and even call down lightning and thunderclouds, as well as firing metal objects at supersonic speeds using Lorentz force (the Railgun that is the source of her epithet and ability name), among other things. She has demonstrated enough skill and battle knowledge to fight head-on with powerful beings such as a Saint like Brunhild Eiktobel. She has frequently been described as having firepower on par with a cruiser. Railgun: The Railgun (超電磁砲レールガン, Chō-Denjihō (Rērugan)?, lit. "Super Electromagnetic Cannon") is Mikoto's signature technique, the source of her epithet and her ability name. Operating in a manner similar to its namesake, by forming parallel currents on both sides of her arm with her electricity and utilizing Lorentz force, Mikoto can fire metal objects at three times the speed of sound. She primarily uses arcade coins as her projectiles for portability. According to the System Scan on July 16th of the story's first year, her Railgun has a muzzle velocity of 1030 m/s (2307.2 mph), a firing rate of 8 shots per minute and a projectile distribution of 18.9mm. The Railgun's primary limiting factor is air resistance and the resulting friction. As the projectile passes through the air at supersonic speeds, the friction causes a loss of kinetic energy and generates heat, building up to levels which cause most projectiles to melt.[18][22] With her typical projectiles, the arcade coins are entirely vaporized after travelling 50 meters.[18][20][23][22] Larger projectiles usually have a longer maximum range and more destructive power. When Mikoto uses coins for her Railgun, she usually fires them from her thumb, resting on the side of her index finger, sometimes flipping the coin beforehand and launching it when it lands on her thumb.[7][6] For larger projectiles, she often punches them. Aside from using different projectiles, Mikoto has also used or referred to several variations of her Railgun: While using a giant iron sand puppet in her battle with the Doppelganger and its giant debris puppet, Mikoto used the electricity built up within her giant's iron sand body to fire off iron sand bullets from it in a manner similar to her Railgun. These shots were capable of punching through her enemy's debris giant and accurately hitting targets several kilometers away. Liquid Proof Railgun (液状被覆超電磁砲リキッドプルーフレールガン, Ekijō Hifuku Chō-Denjihō (Rikiddo Purūfu Rērugan)?, lit. "Liquid-Coated Super-Electromagnetic Cannon"): A variation which Mikoto used with support from Shokuhou Misaki while piloting the Anti-Art Attachment.[22] Utilizing the ability to manipulate liquids with fine control which forms the foundation of Mental Out in cojunction with Mikoto's electromagnetic ability, a slight liquid coating is applied to the coin used as a projectile, with a special lattice pattern designed to melt in a specific way, described as requiring precision far greater than the ablative heat shield used to protect a space shuttle during atmospheric re-entry. Where the coin would normally melt due to friction from air resistance, the ablative coating takes away the frictional heat and cools the coin, melting in a specific way to preserve it. As the liquid explosively expands as steam, it accelerates the coin further, resulting in it gaining speed as it flies.[22] With the frictional bottleneck neutralized and additional acceleration beyond the initial launch, the Railgun's normal speed and distance limits are removed, resulting in increased destructive power.[22] The Liquid Proof Railgun is capable of penetrating the Windowless Building's Calculate Fortress, which was capable of withstanding a nuclear blast and an attack by Accelerator fuelled by the planet's rotational energy. While being annoyed by Misaka Worst, Mikoto threatened to unleash a never-before-seen Rail-Shotgun on her.[35] She has yet to perform such a technique, and apparently it would be a bit difficult due to neighboring electromagnetic fields interfering with each other. Electricity: As an Electromaster, Mikoto is capable of generating and manipulating electricity,[6][7][11][21] and being the strongest Electromaster, she can do this on a scale beyond any other such espers in Academy City.[6][7][11][21] Her maximum output is known to be 1 billion volts,[6][37][10] rivaling that of a thermal power station (though apparently not for total amount of power produced in a day),[36] and can easily meet power requirements on the level of a battleship's diesel engine.[38] Her body is immune to the effects of its own electricity, as well as electrocution from external sources. Mikoto can discharge electricity from her body in order to attack or incapacitate a target, both from direct contact and at a distance.[18][7][39][40][41] She often launches these attacks in a directed form, described as a "lightning spear" (雷撃の槍, Raigeki no Yari?, lit. "Lightning attack spear").[18][42] While she can discharge electricity in any direction from her body,[7][43][27] she usually releases electrical attacks directed from her hands,[44][31][40] or most commonly, launched from her forehead. Besides charring a target from electricity directly,[29][44][46][31] Mikoto's stronger electrical attacks can produce sufficient heat to burn targets without directly hitting them,[47][48] as shown when the AIM Burst was roasted despite blocking her electricity with an insulation barrier.[47][48] Her electrical attacks can fry electronics,[49][50] and some are accompanied by a degree of electromagnetic pulse (EMP), with some of her less-controlled discharges (typically released in outbursts of anger) disabling or short-circuiting nearby electrical devices.[51][52][53][49] Mikoto can also safely produce and discharge electricity underwater or partially in water. Given her level of power, Mikoto is also capable of using her ability to call down real lightning, regardless of the season, with power enough to cause a city-wide blackout.[18][55][56][53][57] Beyond a single lightning strike, she can call down massive thunderclouds with multiple lightning strikes occurring from within.[58][59] She is one of only a few espers capable of this degree of large-scale weather control. Mikoto's strong electricity can cause electrical breakdown and she has utilized it with the air for a number of purposes.[61][62] When at high altitudes and supersonic speeds without the protection of a cockpit or life support systems (such as when flying the A.A.A.), Mikoto can open a 'hole' in the atmosphere by breaking air down, providing her with oxygen while also causing rushing air to naturally be redirect (as fluids flow from denser to less dense areas), preventing frictional damage.[62] When facing Shundan Kimi, who was countering her electricity with her own apparently electrical attacks, Mikoto used the electrical breakdown of air and the subsequent currents to guide her opponent's attacks, and create an opening for one of her own. In the anime adaptation of World War III's events, a falling Mikoto used her electricity in order to detonate air above the snow-covered ground below her, in order to cushion her descent and land safely,[63] similar to what her clone Misaka Worst did.[64][65] During her encounter with Synthesize Grid, on realizing the presence of microscopic dust of highly conductive metal filling the area (and causing a lot of static electricity), she intended to use a corona discharge from her hands to trigger electro precipitation.[66] One side-effect of Mikoto's stronger electrical discharges is the creation of ozone,[67] and she is capable of deliberately creating ozone from oxygen using her power (something which her weaker Sisters have also been shown to be capable of).[68][69][70][71] The composition of air can be altered in a similar way.[72] Mikoto can also create plasma, having done so at least once by ionizing empty cans,[49] and may be able to revert plasma to its original state by putting the separated electrons and cations back together. During the Liberal Arts City incident, Mikoto was able to use electricity and the large amount of water vapor in her surroundings for flight.[12][74] As a result of large-scale attacks on the ocean at the time, a large amount of water vapor was present in the surrounding air, and static electricity was present from interactions between the particles, in the right proportions for Mikoto to influence.[12][74] Using formulas similar to the ones used for her iron sand sword, she used the static electricity between the particles to gather and manipulate the water vapor into wings, and used her electrical power to induce electrolysis, obtaining hydrogen and oxygen to use as fuel. This flight method could only be sustained for a short amount of time before the conditions that enabled it passed.[74] The wings are at least strong enough to blow up air-to-air missiles.[74] In addition to utilizing and manipulating static electricity present in her surroundings,[12] she can use her power to eliminate static electricity from objects. Mikoto can also use the light produced from the electrical phenomena she creates to blind or distract an enemy's eyes,[49][76][77] such from the flash of a basic electrical discharge,[76][77] or from ionizing empty cans to create plasma. Electromagnetism: Alongside her electricity, Mikoto can use electromagnetism and at a similar degree of power. She frequently utilizes it to manipulate metallic materials in her surroundings to her advantage, with great versatility. If an object is comprised of a magnetic metal or contains such metallic parts within it, she can affect that object with electromagnetism. At Mikoto's level of power and control, she can manipulate a large number of objects at once,[29][31] and move objects of considerable size and weight. At a basic level, Mikoto can use her magnetism to move objects, to relocate them or place them in the way of an incoming attack or hazard, throw them at a target as a projectile, or hold them in place.[79][80][81][27][76][77][14] She can gather multiple manipulated objects together for various purposes, such as creating a make-shift cage or shield out of scrap metal or debris,[82][40][83][48][84][46] temporarily restoring a destroyed stairway or make such a path from scratch.[85][86] Besides moving or holding, attracting or repelling, objects can also be bent or torn by varying forces on them. If an enemy is using a metal tool or weapon, she can manipulate its movement to interfere with or completely stop their attacks, as well as magnetize it so that nearby iron objects will attach to it and increase its weight.[14][16] She is capable of keeping a helicopter from taking off,[91] lift and throw an entire train track,[92][93] lifting the floor,[94][86] stop a tank moving at over 80 kph,[95] or stopping a car speeding towards her.[21] Her power and control over electromagnetism is even enough to be able to temporarily support several uprooted and pilled up buildings while preventing the structures and their occupants from being crushed. As well as moving objects around her with electromagnetism, Mikoto can also utilize her powers in conjunction with metallic structures in her surroundings in order to enhance her movement capabilities.[96][45][21][97][98] By exploiting the metallic components inside a building's walls and ceilings, she can stick to as well as walk and run on those walls and ceilings.[99][57][40][100][101] By utilizing metallic targets at differing heights,[45][21] often present in an urban environment,[45][21] Mikoto can either scale those heights,[45][97][98] or control her descent from them.[102][99][45] By pulling or pushing between herself and multiple targets along her path with her electromagnetism, Mikoto can cover increased distances and supplement her speed. She can quickly pull herself towards a large object that she has just launched away from herself for an evasive maneuver, though exceeding the speed of a car when doing this would likely harm her.[28][102] She can carry one or two others during her electromagnetically-assisted movement by similarly dragging a metallic object they are holding onto or are connected to. Besides influencing physical objects, Mikoto has a number of wave-based uses for her electromagnetic powers.[11] She is capable of manipulating various types of electromagnetic wave,[11][106][62][107] such as microwaves,[106][62][107] diverting the waves and similar electromagnetic phenomena in her surroundings,[106] or emitting electromagnetic waves herself.[51][108][62][107][109] She can use this to interfere with radar and radar-based weapons (such as guided missiles),[50] and cause powerful electromagnetic pulses (EMP) which, besides disabling machines (with the inadvertant knocking out or short-circuiting of nearby electrical devices often accompanying her angry outbursts),[51][52][53][49][110] can also be used to damage a living target's internal organs. She has considered the possibility of firing a hydrogen maser using a combination of Shokuhou's moisture control and her electrolysis,[111] though she hasn't been seen to explicitly use her powers for a maser so far. With her ability capable of interfering with electrons and electromagnetic waves, Mikoto is capable of interfering with phenomena produced by other espers that are rooted in electrons and EM waves. This includes bending shots from Mugino Shizuri's Meltdowner (with the 4th-ranked Level 5 capable of deflecting her electricity through similar interference),[112][113][114][115] shot from STUDY's Pseudo Meltdowner (modified to artificially replicate Mugino's Particle-Function Waveform High-Speed Cannon),[24] and likely the laser produced by Yumiya Iruka's Wave Conductor. Iron Sand: One of Mikoto's most prominent uses of electromagnetism is for the manipulation of iron sand (砂鉄, Satetsu?).[51][117][118] Often gathered in large amounts from her surroundings, Mikoto can utilize the iron sand in a variety of shapes,[51][117][118][50][29][31][27] with the individual particles vibrating at high speed, allowing them to cut through objects in a manner similar to a chainsaw.[51][117][118] The vibrations of the iron sand are strong enough to penetrate or cut through concrete blocks,[119][40] pavement,[120][121] rubble,[122] and metals.[123][79] The small size of the iron sand means that it can be placed or mixed in discretely,[14][124][125][126][127][29][31] and allows it to infiltrate gaps and wounds to cut targets from within. The small size of the iron sand means that it can be placed or mixed in discretely,[14][124][125][126][127][29][31] and allows it to infiltrate gaps and wounds to cut targets from within.[29][31] The nature of the iron sand constructs means that even if they are disrupted, they can be replenished and regenerated. Mikoto frequently wields it in the form of an iron sand sword (砂鉄剣, Satetsuken?) or whip sword (鞭のような剣, Muchi no yō na Ken?), a cutting blade which she can lengthen into a whip at will.[117][118] She can also it to pierce and grab onto objects, in a manner similar to a grappling hook.[30][31] Although she often creates a single sword to wield in her hand,[117][118] she is not limited to one,[49] at one time creating eight iron sand whips from a sphere on her back, described as similar to an octopus' tentacles or a spider's legs, allowing her to attack from several directions at the same time.[79][128] Aside from the whip and the sword, Mikoto also wields the iron sand in bulk,[92][29][50] creating long tendrils (some with the shape of long or giant hands), small tornadoes or huge waves to assault foes.[92][29][129][50] In Russia during World War III, she used iron sand gathered from 200m around her in a wave compared to a tsunami or a giant snake to slice through tanks and armored vehicles of the independent unit with the Opasnosti.[50] During a clash with Sogiita Gunha, she created several hundred drills (which were also electrified) to pierce her enemy.[49] Mikoto has also used the iron sand to form projectiles,[27] being able to create a storm of killer needles that surround an opponent for a 360 degree attack.[14] By spreading iron sand across the ground, Mikoto can use it to follow the footsteps of an enemy moving at supersonic speeds.[14] Under reduced visual conditions, she has used iron sand and dust to form decoys in the shape of herself or others.[130][28][131] When trapped in a composite oil mix created by Military Oil, she was able to use the vibrations from iron sand she had mixed into it to break down the oil (causing it to lose its characteristics in the process), carrying oxygen and other breathable components of air in it to her mouth.[124] She has also used iron sand to absorb and isolate gasoline on a person's body while making a quick escape with them from an explosion. During her battle with the Doppelganger, Mikoto used her ability to create a gigantic puppet out of iron sand and dust to match the Doppelganger's own gigantic debris puppet.[29][31] Possessing considerable strength due to its size and mass, the puppet is somewhat fragile due to its fine composition, but its nature as an iron sand construct means it can regenerate and change forms.[29][31] Additionally, the iron sand can infiltrate wounds inflicted to a target and cut it from within. The vibrating iron sand particles inside the puppet rub together and build up electricity, making the puppet dangerous to touch.[29][31] The stored electricity can be used to fire an iron sand bullet, in a manner similar to Mikoto's Railgun.[29][31] In the battle with the Doppelganger, an iron sand bullet was able to penetrate the thick armor of the Doppelganger's debris puppet and caused massive damage to it,[29][31] as well as being able to shoot down propelled gas tanks from several kilometers away. During a clash with Kihara Nayuta, Mikoto combined her electricity and iron sand to create a large electric cage to trap her adversary. First, Mikoto creates several hundred iron sand balls around her, which spread around the area before dividing into smaller spinning balls. The balls then start emitting bluish sparks as Mikoto uses them to conduct electricity to cover the gaps between the iron sand balls, forming the cage. Mikoto can freely control the size and shape of this cage, and can repair it and reform it in case it's damaged by controlling iron sand.[49] Mikoto has also used iron sand to form conductive metallic rods for her electricity and similarly run electricity through iron sand constructs (such as piercing drills used in the subsequent clash with Sogiita Gunha). Hacking: Being able to directly control electricity, Mikoto can hack practically any electronic device and bypass normal electronic security measures with ease.[133][134] Picturing a system in her head and manipulating minute electrical currents in the electronics,[135][136] she can perform precise hacking and control devices without any physical inputs.[137][136] As long as a system relies on electricity, even if it is entirely new and built from scratch, Mikoto is capable of hacking, rewriting and hijacking it, with no programming language that cannot be read and no firewall that cannot be broken.[133][134] While she can understand information on electronic systems with her power to a certain extent,[136][133] she still uses a terminal's screen in order to read various types of information from a computer system she is hacking, such as documents. Besides hacking electronic devices and systems in her immediate vicinity, Mikoto can perform hacking remotely, so long as she has a terminal and some form of connection to her target.[141][142][136][143][138][87][88] A prominent example of this was her initial attack on the Level 6 Shift Project facilities, hacking machinery in the facilities over the internet and causing it to malfunction and catch fire or explode, resulting in extensive damage before the communication lines were cut.[144][145] She has also attempted to obtain classified information from the Bank multiple times. Mikoto's usage of this skill in taking control of machines is extensive, from simply bypassing electronic locks,[144][145] forcing vending machines to dispense products and an ATM to dispense a stuck card,[37][146][147][117] to hijacking vehicles and military-level weapons.[148][50][149][133][150][151] She has taken over robots such as Academy City's roving security robots[141][142][152][153] and the guard robots used in prison facilities in moments,[26][28] and similarly seized machines such as the Five Over with little difficulty (in that particular case, the control exerted could be negated by Imagine Breaker).[149][154][79] In at least one case, she reprogrammed robots ahead of time to defend her when she couldn't use her power. When facing cameras, sensors and displays,[141][142][144][81] besides simply causing them not to work properly,[141][142] Mikoto can erase herself from live security footage in real time,[141][142][156][90][137] or have a display show a fabricated image.[157] Before or during an attempt at rewriting, she can scan a target to reveal its structure and obtain details on its operating system.[144][81][133] She can rapidly perform searches and pull data from computer systems,[138][158][140] as well as restore deleted data.[141][142][159][81] She is also capable of stealing information from a credit card's magnetic strip. Mikoto is accustomed to the difficulty of hacking in Academy City,[161][136] with technology and cyber defenses generally more advanced than the rest of the world (with the city said to be 30 years ahead)[162][7] and a degree of esper countermeasures.[136] She also has a degree of expertise with normal, non-ability hacking, and sometimes uses it in conjunction with her ability (such as for tackling parts with anti-esper security).[136] She was capable of instructing Touma how to get past an electronic lock over the phone, with only a picture of the lock. Sensory and Biological Applications: As an Electromaster, Mikoto is able to sense electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic phenomena.[165][166][147][96][12][167][168][24][140][80][81] However, unlike lower level Electromasters such as her clone Sisters, she is able to see and follow electric and magnetic field lines with her eyes. Mikoto is constantly emitting electromagnetic waves and can sense those released waves.[82][40] By emitting faint microwaves in all directions and reading the returning reflected waves, with the same principles as radar,[82][40][107] Mikoto can sense her immediate surroundings as well as objects and individuals within them.[24] In a closed room, this radar enables her to see a three-dimensional image of the room even without the use of her regular sight.[94][86] It also allows her to sense attacks coming from her blind spots,[82][40] as well as enabling her to block, deflect, intercept or evade attacks and hazards without looking in their direction. While the anti-personnel microwave radar generally leaves Mikoto with no blind spots,[41][107] it does have several weaknesses - materials that absorb or dampen EM waves can be used to avoid detection,[41] and, as demonstrated by Misaka 10032, if the waves' frequency is known then they can be negated by sending out reverse phase waves. During her battle with Kiyama Harumi, Mikoto inadvertently read her memories and saw her past through a connection formed when she grabbed and shocked her at point-blank range. As an Electromaster, Mikoto has a degree of control over bioelectricity and as such, a resistance to the mental manipulation method used by Mental Out and similar abilities.[171] Mikoto's level of power means that she is normally immune to manipulation from Shokuhou Misaki's Level 5 ability,[172][91] [173][22][174][175] with attempts to control her being blocked with nothing more than a short headache.[172][91] This protection comes from both the electromagnetic barrier created by her AIM Diffusion Field,[172][91] and her own subconscious rejection.[173][22][174][175] It is possible for her to reduce her barrier and rejection to create a window for Mental Out to affect her (for example, to allow Shokuhou to share and lessen the burden of the A.A.A.), but opening and closing such a window is not simple or instantaneous. Although the application of her power to help people with muscular dystrophy was a pretext to acquire her DNA map,[2][141][177][142][144][178][179] Mikoto was capable of using her powers to control and move her muscles and nerves when they had been rendered ineffective through the use of an injected drug. The cost of this was that it required her to constantly use her powers on her body, effectively making her a walking stun gun. Mikoto has also learned from Hokaze Junko how to use the same physical strengthening method which Hokaze uses with her Rampage Dress.[180][41][76][77][181] The method is noted to require really fine control and a single mistake could mean serious injury,[180][41] with Mikoto's power strong enough that she has to be very careful to avoid frying her own nerves or breaking her bones.[41] On one occasion, when she forcibly jumped forward in response to an ambush from behind, Mikoto dislocated her thigh.[41] As well as the whole body, she can limit the areas which are strengthened (such as restricting it to her triceps or legs),[180] and has used it to descend several storeys and cover a moderate distance under the cover of a brief flash.
