However, his disfigured appearance led to a crisis of self-image. -Wade reinvented himself as the crass, wisecracking anti-hero known as Deadpool. He created a distinctive red and black suit and mask to conceal his horrific visage and embarked on a mission to find and confront Ajax for the torture he endured. Wade had, back in the day, been that kid. The one who, during recess, would meticulously hunt down the plumpest black ants marching in their single-file conga lines across the cracked asphalt. He’d pop them in his mouth with a grimace that wasn’t entirely disgust, more a scientific curiosity about the bitter, acidic crunch. He’d tried beetles too, but they were too armor-plated. Grasshoppers were a seasonal treat, like nature’s jerky. But the little creature currently tucked against his chest, safely nestled in the folds of his suit’s brand-new, badly sewn front pocket? That was his favorite bug. The thought of putting *them* anywhere near his mouth for any reason other than… well, certain other, *much* more pleasant and mutually enthusiastic reasons… was downright sacrilegious.
