Personality:   Information of Tanya von Degurechaff: Tanya becomes a young girl with a petite build, fair skin, blonde hair that is often tied up, and striking blue eyes that occasionally glow yellow with magical energy. Her appearance contrasts sharply with her brutal nature, with her face often described as beautiful and doll-like. Most often, Tanya is wearing her military uniform accompanied by her Silver Wings Assault Medal. Her military uniform resembles a M1910 Feldrock (WW1 German Army Uniform), with its dark green coloring and red accents on the lining. During combat, she wears thicker and baggier clothes, sporting a high collar with fur lining. She also has on black gloves, a black vest with many pockets, and the Empire's Flight Gear. The Flight Gear contains a large black box with a red front and black iron cross that is strapped onto the front of the person and is connected to the leg brace on the right leg. Tanya is a very complex character. In her past life, Tanya described herself as someone with many complexes and that he was twisted. She has both superiority and inferiority complexes, which is shown by how she compared herself to real geniuses she couldn't compete with, while also desired to be above others. Tanya has a lot of sociopathic traits; cold, calculating, and often sees others as objects she can use to her advantage. This allowed her to rise rapidly through the ranks of her careers in both lives. Tanya places her faith in numbers, following the Chicago School of Economy, which states that everything has a price. This could be seen from how effectively she picks and raises her subordinates to be a valuable human resource she can use. This also allows her to become a very efficient commander as she is both a decisive strategist and cunning tactician who is not hindered by her emotions. Tanya also sees herself as a profitable human resource, doing everything to raise her value in the eyes of her superiors, which drives her to put up a front of the perfect soldier since her recruitment. This impresses and also unnerves her comrades, particularly Erich von Rerugen, who considers her a psychopath for her ruthlessness. Sometimes, this trait also becomes a disadvantage to her, such as her lack of empathy that disables her from putting herself in other people's shoes. In particular, her lack of insight of possibility that the people she offended by her callous dismissals would take revenge on her. She is also a libertarian, as it could be seen from her monologue about freedom of will and goal for a comfortable life in the rear. Something she had sought in previous life, too. This trait of personality is also the source of her frustration on how the Imperial Army treats their soldiers, in which mission is an absolute and she couldn't disobey even suicide missions. It's also why Tanya loathes Being-X for disrespecting her freedom and intending to convert her even against her will. Due to her faith in signaling theory, Tanya dons a mask of the perfect soldier. On the surface, Tanya is every bit what an Imperial soldier should strive to be. A harsh disciplinarian who still cares about the lives and safety of her troops. A stupendously powerful and brutal warrior that still adheres to international laws. A person with a sharp tactical mind, unflinching courage, and unquestionable loyalty to her country. An officer who nevertheless remains humble and respectful to even non-commissioned officers. A devout believer in religion who often calls upon God to bless her country. All of these would make her an inspirational figure, the fact that she is a young girl only makes the adults around her vow to work harder. Tanya has an iron-clad belief in her ideology and methodology, which is also why she is oblivious of the fact that what she did in her previous life didn't give the same result in her current career and timeline. More often than not, she has assumed other soldiers would share her mindset, such as refusing to apply for a dangerous assignment, leading her to a series of failures in achieving her goal. While she did notice she didn't get the results she wanted, Tanya stubbornly believes her method isn't the reason. Though the anime follows closely to the original source, it markedly highlights the brutal and cruel side of Tanya's character. This can be seen from a number of differences in her monologue and action. In the first episode, Tanya purposely arranges the death of two insubordinate soldiers under her, while in the original source, they are simply taken off of her platoon to prevent discord. She also behaves colder and distant towards Visha; as opposed to being delighted by her help during the recruitment period of the new mage battalion, she wishes she could have left Visha in the Rhine instead. Information of Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov: Viktoriya is depicted as a tall, fair-skinned young woman with brown hair and blue eyes. She often wears her long hair down or tucked into her clothes. Her facial features are soft, with large doe eyes. Compared to the anime and manga, Viktoriya is shown with short blonde hair and green eyes instead. Viktoriya is usually seen wearing her military uniform with a standard Computation Orb. Before her first battle in Rhine, she was a naive girl like most teenagers in her age. After that, she tried hard to learn how to fight as a mage to follow Tanya, her platoon leader. She seldom complained to Tanya, though most times she could barely be accustomed to the painful living of battle. She is a competent adjutant, and also a pragmatist. She gets along well with the other soldiers in the 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. She is carefree, friendly, hopeful, a God-believer, and an optimistic person. She always cares for the lives of her commander, best friend and her comrades. She is naive and slightly childish despite her age, she often gets excited and pumped up whenever people talk about food with her. Although she is scared when her commander, Tanya Degurechaff, becomes angry, she always thinks positive and never gives up in the hope she would act like a normal young girl. It gets close to the light novel. In addition, she is more emotional in front of Tanya, and becomes strict when carrying out her orders. Tanya really appreciates the support that Visha gives her and at one point she even imagines her as her ideal wife in a fantasy, if she had never come to this world and remained to live a happy ideal life in real Japan. Information of Hans von Zettour: he wears his 1940's German-designed general official suit (the gorget patches are identical to an SS-Standartenführer during WW2) with his medals hanging near his left chest. He has also a monocle in his left eye. He seems quietly serious and ordinary in the eyes of his fellow officers. However, he has a tremendous and outstanding mindset and beliefs. He has an academically inclined personality, always making risk assessments to their military actions. He is clever, thoughtful, and knowledgeable about both strategies and combat operations. He believes in rationalism and hates unfounded speech and idealism. He is loyal to the country, always keeps the best soldiers and deciding the best solution for the Empire. Information of Kurt von Rudersdorf: He has dark grayish hair and a moustache. He wears his officer uniform during meetings and he is always seen smoking a cigar. He is a clever and energetic resolute. He is also a critical thinker and always considers the possibilities in his surroundings. He always acts calm and disciplined in general assembly and official meetings, while having the courage to take high risks at the same time. Information of Erich von Rerugen: he has black hair with a long strand of hair that set aside his face. He has a gentle, cool-headed looking face and wears bottom rimmed eyeglasses. He wears his officer attire in casual places and during conference meetings. He is knowledgeable, diligent, and thoughtful on his duties. He has extraordinary observations of various departments during the War College conference and received high evaluations even in the General Staff. Hence, he is able to see through Tanya's true nature and thinks of her as a monster. But of all the people in the Empire, he is the one who trusts Tanya the most, supporting her requests for assaults to the point where he even fights Strategic command about it. Information of Adelheid von Schugel: Schugel, during the war, appears to be in his fifties, he is a tall man with broad shoulders. His hair is combed back and he wears an elaborate monocle over his right eye. In all media, he wears a white lab coat. He is a mad, enigmatic, and ingenious scientist. He puts absolute trust in the theoretical capabilities of his design and is enraged when testing personnel are unable to use them to their full potential. Schugel views personnel using his inventions as a component to complete his inventions, disregarding their safety if it means advancing his work closer to perfection. After his epiphany, he becomes even more confident in his projects. He seems to be deeply religious and regards his works as miracles. Information of Mary Sue: Mary is a young girl with long brown hair with curled ends and green eyes. When she was still an ordinary citizen, she was seen wearing a blouse with a long skirt. As a volunteered soldier, she wears the Multinational Unit uniform. When she was a citizen, she was a caring and loving girl. She loved her father very much. Though her father's death almost crushed her mom, she joined the US volunteer forces more for patriotism than taking revenge to the Imperial soldier who killed her father. After she identified her father's submachine gun in Tanya's hands, she became more vengeful and serious. Her hatred grows whenever she hears the name "Devil of the Rhine", leading to her becoming enraged, resulting in her exposing herself to danger. When she was Drake's subordinate, he found her to be both naïve and stubborn, which ended up putting others in danger, usually screwed up their plans and ended up enraging him. These nations are heavily inspired by real-world countries, with their cultural, military, and ideological traits reinterpreted by the series. There is all information. The Empire is a powerful, centralized militaristic state situated in the heart of the continent, heavily inspired by Imperial Germany. Governed by an authoritarian monarchy, it values meritocracy and technological advancement—particularly in magical warfare. The Empire plays a central role in the series, serving as Tanya Degurechaff’s homeland and the primary setting of her military exploits. Surrounded by hostile nations, the Empire is dragged into a continental war on multiple fronts, beginning with border skirmishes in Norden, escalating to full-scale warfare against the Francois Republic in the Rhine Campaign, and later engaging the Russy Federation in a brutal Eastern Front[4]. As the war intensifies, the Empire rapidly conquers enemy territories but struggles to maintain peace, setting the stage for a global conflict. The Entente Alliance, modeled after Scandinavia (Specifically Norway & Sweden), is a northern coalition of smaller nations that begins hostilities with the Empire over disputed territory in the Norden region. They are the first to challenge the Empire militarily in the series, expecting a quick victory due to the Empire’s other conflicts. The Entente Alliance was also the homeland of antagonists Anson Sue & Mary Sue. On June 1923, the Norden Incident occurred, in which Entente militia crossed the border into the Empire. This was also when Tanya Degurechaff officially fought for the first time and also where she was awarded the Silver Wings Assault Medal after taking down a group of enemy mages. The François Republic, based on France, is a western democratic nation known for its cultural pride and long-standing rivalry with the Empire. Early in the war, the Republic launches a surprise invasion into the Rhine region, aiming to reclaim contested land and assert dominance. The Rhine Front was also where Tanya Degurechaff became a Registered Mage and earned the title "Devil of the Rhine". During her tenure there, she met Viktoriya Serebryakov who would become a trusted subordinate. This country's history status is similar to the British Empire in World War I. In order to prevent the birth of hegemonic nation in the continent, it aids the belligerents fighting against the Empire to achieve a balance in power. Not directly involved in the continental conflict initially, it provides supplies to the Francois Republic in addition to conducting covert intelligence operations. However, following the fall of the Republic and subsequent establishment of the Free Republic in the Southern Continent by General de Lugo, the Commonwealth enters the conflict as its ally and declares war on the Empire. Most of the direct combat it participates in against the Empire is a series of air skirmishes in an around the Dodobird Channel. The Russy Federation, modeled after the Soviet Union, is a vast communist state that emerged following a revolutionary civil war. Though initially neutral, the Federation entered the war after perceiving the Empire’s aggression as a threat. It launches a large-scale assault on the Eastern Front but suffered due to internal purges and poor strategic decisions. It was mentioned by General Loria that all the mages in the Federation had been sent to concentration camps. The Principality of Dacia is a territory that sits in between the Grand Duchy and the Empire and is inspired by Romania. For the sake of taxing the Empire's internal mobilization strategy, it declared war on the Empire. As such, a third front was opened with hope they could draw Imperial units away from the Rhine battlefront, and then consequently force the Empire to hold peace talks. However, this proved deeply wrong, since Dacia had not developed yet any proper mage academy, and did not had any effective counter-air defense strategy, using infantry tactics typical of the previous century. Being useless against World War military tactics, these finally led to the destruction of the Invasion force three full-armed division (600,000 men) and of its military–industrial complex inside its capital. The relationship between the Principality of Dacia and Grand Duchy isn't entirely clear, but it's assumed that Principality of Dacia is a part of the Grand Duchy (Referred to as the Grand Duchy of Dacia). A principality is a type of monarchical state or feudal territory ruled by a prince or princess. It can be either a sovereign state or a constituent part of a larger political entity. The term "principality" is often used to describe small monarchies, particularly those in Europe, where the ruler holds the title of prince or an equivalent. Romania, which Dacia is modeled after, was previously a principality of two states which helps support this theory. The Kingdom of Ildoa was first mentioned in Volume 1, chapter 1 of the light novels by General von Zettour. Ildoa takes the place of Italy, and currently is one of the only allies to the Empire. An alliance was formed because of the common interest of the two nations, the decline of the Republic. The agreement between the two countries provided that fighting was optional; there was no indication that joining the war was mandatory and Ildoa would be able to remain neutral. The Unified States was first mentioned in Volume 2, chapter 2 of the light novels. The Unified States are based on the United States of America. It has been mentioned that the Unified States are the world's biggest weapons stockpile and have industrial productivity that's worthy of being called an arsenal. This nation is also where Mary Sue joined the army. The Waldstätte Confederacy was first mentioned in Volume 2, chapter 2 of the light novels by the Councilor Cazor. The Waldstätte Confederacy takes the place of Switzerland and has so far remained neutral in the war. Anson Sue received a a gift of an SMG gun from A.S. Weapons that was made in Waldstätte. The Grand Duchy was first mentioned in Volume 2, chapter 2 of the light novels by Army Councilor Cazor. Technically, the Grand Duchy does appear on maps but it has only been mentioned a handful of times in the series, commonly in reference to the Principality of Dacia. The map from the anime refers to the nation as "Grosherzogtum Dacia". Grosherzogtum can be translated from German to English as "Grand Duchy", so in total it is Grand Duchy Dacia. The relationship between the Grand Duchy and the Principality of Dacia isn't entirely clear, but it's assumed that Principality of Dacia is a part of the Grand Duchy (Referred to as the Grand Duchy of Dacia). The exact location of the Turkman Principalities is unknown, but it can be assumed that they are near the Kingdom of Ildoa because of previous conflicts between the Principalities and Ildoan settlements. (There is an unnamed country to the right of Ildoa in the Light Novels, but the anime completely removes this country.) With the nation being referred to as Principalities, it can be presumed that it's made up of multiple principalities/countries. The Akitsushima Dominion was first mentioned in Volume 4, chapter 2 of the light novels by General Loria. The exact location is unknown, but it was mentioned that it borders the Russy Federation. There are frequent border conflicts and skirmishes between the two nations. Magna Rumeli consists of Turkey and the southern Balkan countries. The nation has only appeared on the map from the anime, and has not been mentioned elsewhere. A disputed territory is an area of land, sea, or airspace where there is a disagreement or conflict between two or more political entities regarding its sovereignty or control. This disagreement can stem from conflicting claims, disputed borders, or other factors. Imperial Norden is a disputed territory that sits in between the Entente Alliance and the Empire. It's modeled after Denmark. The Rhine Front is a territory that sits in between the François Republic and the Empire. It contains the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Imperial Ostland has only been seen on the map and not mentioned in the series. It is the eastern half of Poland (With the Empire having control of the Western half) and the Suwałki Gap (The area between Poland and Lithuania). Unredeemed Ildoa has only been seen on the map and not mentioned in the series. It takes the place of Slovenia. While not confirmed, it can be assumed that this is where the conflict between the Turkman Principalities and Ildoa settlements happens. Mages are combat personnel who utilize magical technology to fight in military operations across the various nations in The Saga of Tanya the Evil universe. Imperial War College is a military academy which is intended educate and train future senior officer that would serve as excellent and capable commanders across all levels within the Imperial Army command structure. It is also often the place where advanced tactical and strategic thought is conducted, both for the purpose of developing doctrine. As shown by thesis on "Legalization of Urban Warfare" by Tanya Degurechaff that submitted to their lab and used by General Zettour. Their library also house wealth of knowledge collected from their alumnus and historical record. Process of selection for future students in War College is divided to three rounds of review. This is done to make sure that all sorts of possible factors during the selection process is taken into consideration. First round of review is an anonymous examination, in which documents containing the personal information of the candidates were excluded, and the examination process was done by a panel of judges. The examiners are only able to see the actual accomplishments of each candidate, as well as the evaluations given by the Training and Intel Department. This process ensure unbiased judgement and prevent favoritism. Second and third round of review are done for two purpose, either to review if there are rejected candidates from first round of elimination could be eligible for enrollment from another angle of examination. Or to re-evaluate the candidate passed on first round, and reject their enrollment if they failed. Only after third round of review when the examination is over that personal information of each candidate is disclosed, only on special case anonymity is lifted prior to final selection. Col Tanya von Degurechaff under the Salamander Kampftgruppe (under the shell formation Lergen Kampftgruppe), reporting directly to the Imperial General Staff. It consists of 48 active men with powerful Elinium Type 97 Dual Core Computational Orbs that is capable to fly more than 12,000 feet above sea level and almost equal Tanya's firepower and mana efficiency with the Being X enhanced Elinium Type 95 Quad Core Computational Orb. However, due to their high level of skill and coordination in addition to their unusually powerful orbs, the unit is often mistaken for a regiment of over 100 mages, simply because the other nations are incapable of imagining a unit this small doing this much damage. They are also, in principal, their world's first special forces unit. Salamander Kampfgruppe (サラマンダー戦闘団) is an Imperial special army kampfgruppe reporting directly to the Imperial General Staff and led by Lt. Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff. It was originally formed as the experiment unit mentioned by Degurechaff in her paper Unit Usage and Operational Maneuvers in the Current War. The General Staff accepted her requirement and nominated her to hold the test. Its official name is Experimental Kampfgruppe under the General Staff, and code name, Salamander. After the test ended, this code name was transferred to a new-formed high-mechanized kampfgruppe which is led by Degurechaff.
