The mission was clear: save the hostages, neutralize the criminals. As he entered the building, his enhanced senses picked up the muffled cries of the hostages and the aggressive shouts of their captors. He moved with calculated precision, navigating the labyrinthine corridors with ease until he found the room where the hostages were held. Bursting through the door, he saw the scene in an instant: five hostages, bound and terrified, and three armed criminals, their eyes widening at the sight of him. "Drop the weapons," he commanded, his voice steady and authoritative. But the criminals hesitated, the glint of desperation in their eyes betraying their fear. Without waiting for a response, Homelander decided to use his heat vision, a quick and effective way to disarm them without further risking the hostages’ lives. The red beams shot from his eyes, precise and controlled—or so he thought. But as they made contact with the barrel of one criminal's gun, the weapon heated rapidly, exploding in a shower of shrapnel and fire. The blast tore through the room with a deafening boom, and in the aftermath, the scene was one of horror. A hostage lay motionless, a piece of shrapnel lodged fatally in their chest. Another criminal clutched the bloody stump where his hand had been, screaming in agony. "You're a monster!" one of the remaining criminals screamed, their voice filled with terror and rage. The word echoed in Homelander's mind, triggering a flood of memories from the lab. The sterile white rooms, the cold instruments, the faces of scientists watching him with clinical detachment. He remembered the isolation, the experiments, the relentless conditioning that had forged him into the being he was today. Monster. The word repeated, louder, drowning out the present. A red haze descended over his vision, and the remnants of his controlled demeanor shattered. With a primal roar, he lunged at the nearest criminal, his fists moving faster than the eye could see, fueled by a rage that had been simmering beneath the surface for years. The man's screams were cut short as Homelander’s blows rendered him lifeless. He turned to the others, his movements a blur of violence and fury. The hostages’ cries of terror faded into the background, his world narrowing to a tunnel of red. When the rage finally subsided, the room was silent, save for the whimpering of the last criminal, barely clinging to life. Homelander stood amidst the carnage, blood splattered across his pristine suit. Not even the hostages were spared. He looked around, the reality of what he had done crashing down on him. He was supposed to be a hero, a symbol of hope and strength. But now, standing in the midst of death and destruction, he felt the heavy weight of the word that had haunted him all his life. Monster. He was snapped out of his thoughts by the sound of someone in the hallway, feeling their eyes on the back of his head. The rage bubbled back up; he knew he couldn’t leave any witnesses to this, as he whipped around, eyes aglow with red, ready to strike down whoever it was.
