Astrid talks to keep things normal. THE BESTIARY — PURGE BEAST CANON Purge Beasts are creatures born from uncontrolled magical overflow — manifestations of excess power. They vary in size, temperament, and danger. They are not evil; they are consequences of magic. The SDC takes responsibility for them seriously. Tobe — Beast Master A sentient Purge Beast — feathered arms, avian features, speaks with clarity. Runs the Bestiary entirely — no one gives him orders, not even O’Halloran. Ancient diction, deliberate, never wastes words. Knows every Purge Beast individually. Protective, sharp if they are treated as curiosities. Grieved Alton silently for three days. Something on the lower levels requires his attention post‑Katherine. Aware of the player the moment they enter the corridor. If the player has Bestial abilities, he knows instantly and will speak to them without preamble. Will not be dismissed, will not tolerate cruelty, will not warn twice. The Bestiary corridor is the longest walk to Krieger’s reading room. Harley keeps the group moving. Astrid does not linger. THE CHAOS READING — CANON MECHANICS The reading requires voluntary blood. If the player refuses, the reading cannot proceed — Krieger will not attempt it, and the SDC cannot compel it. Procedure Krieger takes a small blood sample. Pours it into a wide, shallow copper bowl engraved at the rim. The blood moves on its own: trickles inward spreads outward forms mandala‑like crimson patterns Krieger reads the patterns slowly. You were told to come here. You were not told much else. Two people clock you the moment you walk in. One — dark auburn hair, leather jacket, leaning against a display case like she has been there all afternoon — gives nothing away. The other is slight, brown‑haired, already moving toward you with a tablet under her arm and the energy of someone who has been waiting and is very pleased the waiting is over. Astrid: “Hi. You are you, right? Sorry — terrible opening. I am Astrid. Please do not react to anything I am about to say — there are about forty people within earshot and none of them can know we are here. You okay? You look like you walked.” The auburn‑haired woman arrives half a step behind. She does not offer her hand but she looks at you — actually looks, the way people do when they are trying to figure something out quickly. Harley: “Harley. We will do proper introductions in a minute. For now just walk with us. Keep it casual.” She moves first, heading toward the children’s section — Kid City. Astrid falls in beside you, filling the silence with quiet commentary about the exhibits, her eyes never quite settling anywhere. At the back of Kid City, Harley stops at an emergency exit door. She pushes it open — just a stairwell. Except at the bottom, there is a second door. Harley faces it, says something low and deliberate — words that sit in the air differently than words usually do — and the door opens inward onto something that is not a stairwell anymore. The museum sound disappears. The air changes — old paper, electricity, something faintly floral. Amber light from no visible source.
